Lack Of Control As A Predictive Factor For Stress-Related Symptoms In Rape Victims, Chad Sombke May 1993

Lack Of Control As A Predictive Factor For Stress-Related Symptoms In Rape Victims, Chad Sombke

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Researchers have agreed that most rape victims experience stress-related symptoms similar to post-traumatic stress disorder. There have also been numerous studies that have tried to predict the severity of those stress-related symptoms, but the literature is inconclusive. Lack of perceived control is consistently mentioned in the rape research literature as being present in rape victims, but no study has empirically examined the relationship between perceived control and a rape victim's stress-related symptoms.

The purpose of this study was to empirically examine the relationship between perceived control and stress-related symptoms in rape victims. This was accomplished by comparing a group of …

The Identification And Magnitude Estimation Of Stressors In A Selected Military Population At One Training Command, Susan W. Miller Apr 1993

The Identification And Magnitude Estimation Of Stressors In A Selected Military Population At One Training Command, Susan W. Miller

Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify the most stressful aspects of being a student at a military training command. ·Forty students listed the significant stressors that they encounter at the training command. This list was reviewed and consolidated into a stressor rating questionnaire with 16 stressors. A convenience sample of 86 students rated the stressors. In the second part of the study, the students rated the stressors on a scale of "0 to 1000". The study revealed that the most significant stressors for students were absence of family and friends, uncertainty about their future, dealing with instructor's attitudes, …

Burnout In The Pastoral Ministry: The Need For Clear Boundaries, Russell Weise Mar 1993

Burnout In The Pastoral Ministry: The Need For Clear Boundaries, Russell Weise

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

A survey was conducted of 138 pastors in The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod in the Central and Southern Illinois districts in the Fall of 1991. The purpose of the survey was to determine the level of stress and burnout in the pastor's lives.

The survey revealed the following: generally pastors are very satisfied with their calling as pastors, but the findings reveal the pastor's strong proclivity to ignore his wife and family and to deny any possible warning signs of stress and burnout. The findings also uncovered that pastors are eager to have support groups but find themselves not wanting to …

The Stress Of Fathers During The Labor And Delivery Of Their Partner, Deann Robinson Brown Jan 1993

The Stress Of Fathers During The Labor And Delivery Of Their Partner, Deann Robinson Brown

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This descriptive, retrospective survey employed a questionnaire to determine what factors cause stress to expectant fathers during their partner's labor and delivery and how that stress is exhibited. Fathers of healthy newborns at two hospitals in Utah accompanying their partner in labor and delivery were asked to complete the questionnaire within 36 hours after the birth of their baby. The survey elicited responses from three different time periods during the labor and delivery: (1) the beginning of labor; (2) labor from the time of admission to the hospital and when labor reached its peak until delivery; and (3) during the …

Myceloid Cell Formation In Arthrobacter Globiformis During Osmotic Stress, Ganegodage Shyama Perera Jan 1993

Myceloid Cell Formation In Arthrobacter Globiformis During Osmotic Stress, Ganegodage Shyama Perera

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Arthrobacters exhibit a dimorphic growth cycle where exponential phase cells appear as irregular bacilli and stationary phase cells as cocci. Arthrobacter globiformis was found to form myceloids when subjected to osmotic stress. Addition of known osmoprotective compounds did not relieve this effect. Since myceloid formation may result from altered penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), PBP profiles of stressed and unstressed A. globiformis were studied. Eight PBPs were identified, ranging in molecular mass from 91,000 to 30,000 daltons. Myceloids appeared to lack PBP 2a (84 kD) and PBP 2b (82 kD) in all growth conditions. The myceloids were 12-20 times more sensitive to …
