Breathing Pacer Device For Stress And Anxiety Relief, Maria Grazia Guerrero Bejarano May 2020

Breathing Pacer Device For Stress And Anxiety Relief, Maria Grazia Guerrero Bejarano

Theses

Stress and stress-related physical and mental diseases are increasing and affecting more people every day. There have been many approaches to try to solve this issue. Many of them are based on the idea that meditation and mindfulness breathing could improve these conditions. The problem is that not everyone can achieve those levels of meditation for that to work. Another issue is that those solutions are relying on a particular way of breathing to help all.

In contrast, this project developed under research that shows that the amount of CO₂ in a person's exhaled breath could be an indicator of …

Eazytrack: Exploring Next-Gen Technology And User Experience Design To Help Relieve Stress, Kaiyi Dong

Theses

In this competitive society with the pace of people’s life speeding up, stress is inevitable. Too much stress though will bring negative effects on people’s physical and emotional wellbeing. According to a survey the American Psychological Association conducted from 2007 to 2016, very few actions are being taken to prevent or relieve stress effectively even though an increasing number of people have realized that stress has an impact on health and wellbeing.¹ Untreated chronic stress can contribute to severe health problems including anxiety, insomnia, muscle pain, high blood pressure, and a weakened immune system.² Today, there are many stress trackers …

An Analysis Of Stresses And Displacements Around A Fault Plane Due To Longwall Face Advance In Coal Mining, Corbin Grant Carlton

Theses

This study has examined 3D stresses and displacements around a longwall mining system that is intercepted by a geological fault. More specifically, the study has analyzed the effect of a fault on longwall gate development entries, set-up rooms, T-junctions, and the longwall face as the longwall face progressed toward, through, and away from the fault. A general lithologic sequence and mining parameters related to the Herrin No. 6 coal seam in southern Illinois were employed. FLAC3D structural analysis code was used for simulating two (2) adjacent longwall faces. Linear elastic rock mass elements with non-linear elastic-plastic fault elements were analyzed …

The Impact Of Humor On Stress Responses During A Listening Span Task, Cynthia L. Stanley Jan 2018

Participants reported higher workload ratings following completion of the MLS, demonstrating an increased mental workload. Subjective stress ratings and PWA readings were higher following the completion of the MLS, illustrating an increase …

Moderators In The Relationship Between Child Maltreatment And Symptoms Of Depression, Sarah Nowalis Nov 2017

Moderators In The Relationship Between Child Maltreatment And Symptoms Of Depression, Sarah Nowalis

Theses

Experiencing child maltreatment is a risk factor for later psychopathology, however, not all survivors of child maltreatment go on to develop mental illness. Therefore, there are likely important moderators that interact with child maltreatment to contribute to the development of psychopathology. The present study examined attachment and stress severity of life events as possible moderators in the association between child maltreatment and later depressive symptomatology in a population of college students. Participants completed measures of attachment, stressful life events, current mood symptoms, and demographic information. An attachment style characterized by anxiety and avoidance, and greater cumulative stress severity were expected …

Identifying Medical Resident Stress With Work Domain Representation, Daniel Nystrom May 2013

Identifying Medical Resident Stress With Work Domain Representation, Daniel Nystrom

Theses

Resident physicians must endure substantial amounts of stress to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to become competent, certified physicians. Multiple factors that contribute to high levels of stress in different areas of the healthcare domain have been identified, but stress continues to be a major problem despite this knowledge and efforts to reduce it. This thesis describes a holistic approach to the problem of resident stress by employing methods of Cognitive Work Analysis to systematically review and organize relevant research literature, observations, interview responses, and survey information according to the area of the work domain where each stressor is …

My Direct Reports: Office Toys For Young Adults., Yunglin Tsun May 2012

My Direct Reports: Office Toys For Young Adults., Yunglin Tsun

Theses

Today, working in an office is more challenging than ever. The space is often filled with tension and the work requires people to make decisions and perform their duties in a fast-paced environment. To ease anxiety and keep productivity high, companies often encourage employees to bring toys to their office. However, in the current market, toys for grownups often miss the mark: most of them still use the same design language as children's toys. As adults, we appreciate objects differently. How can we as designers extract the spirit of a toy, then incorporate it into products that appeal to grown-ups …

High Field Induced Stress Suppression Of Gidl Effects In Tfts, Andrew Mccabe Jan 2010

High Field Induced Stress Suppression Of Gidl Effects In Tfts, Andrew Mccabe

Theses

Gate-Induced drain leakage (GIDL) is an unwanted short-channel effect that occurs at higher drain biases in an overdriven off state of a transistor. The GIDL is the result of a deep depletion region that forms in the drain at high drain-to-gate biases. The depletion region causes significant band bending which in-turn allows conductive band-to-band tunneling creating excess current. In a PFET, electrons tunnel from the drain to the body while holes tunnel into the drain. By utilizing the effects of high energy, or "hot", electrons, the GIDL current in an accumulation-mode PFET can be suppressed. This suppression is thought to …

Robot Rescue, Hui Yu Ruan Nov 2006

Robot Rescue, Hui Yu Ruan

Theses

Recently, it is very common in Asia that people put little toys on their office desks. It doesn’t mean they sometimes have their kids visiting them nor they are not grown up yet. These are toys, which can soothe their stress from work. I am always attracted by toys and also animations designed or directed by many artists and designers. In this fantasy world of toys, there may not be only human beings. As in Hayao Miyazaki’s animation “Spirited Away,” where there was a magic world ruled by a witch; and there was also an old spider man, a frog …

The Creation And Testing Of A Mock Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Facility For Pain Patients, Gladstone Vincent Reid Aug 2005

The Creation And Testing Of A Mock Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Facility For Pain Patients, Gladstone Vincent Reid

Theses

Unfamiliarity with functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) facilities leads to unwanted stress-related disturbances in the processing of fMRI data. A mock fMRI facility was developed to increase familiarization among subjects participating in fiviRI studies and to alleviate the time and cost of familiarizing each subject in an actual fMRI facility. A decommissioned Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) unit was remodeled to visually and aurally resemble the Siemens Magnetom Allegra 3 Telsa fMRI machine currently used at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), Newark, New Jersey. Instrumentation was developed using LabVIEW software which presented subjects with recreated sounds …

Secondary Traumatic Stress In Law Enforcement Personnel, William Carl Heusler Jan 2000

Secondary Traumatic Stress In Law Enforcement Personnel, William Carl Heusler

Theses

This study was designed to add to the body of empirical knowledge about law enforcement occupational stress utilizing the compassion fatigue/compassion satisfaction model developed by Figley and Stamm. The predictions that intimate contact with trauma victims will increase the risk for compassion fatigue and burnout was evaluated yielding results that established no difference between law enforcement personnel with direct contact and those that had little or no contact with trauma victims. The suggestion that secondary trauma has a cumulative effect on persons exposed over time was also investigated showing that in this population of police officers, a cumulative impact did …

Theses

The purpose of this research was to measure the amount and type of parenting stress perceived by employed married mothers and employed married fathers using a self-report psychological instrument designed to identify parent - child systems under stress. The Parenting Stress Index (PSI), was given to twenty-seven (N = 27) married, employed parents of children age twelve and under. Fifteen women and twelve men volunteered to complete the instrument. At-test was performed and the hypothesis that married, employed mothers would perceive more parenting stress than married, employed fathers was not supported.

Stress Levels In Seminarians And Spouses Of Seminarians, Martha C. Lintvedt Jan 1995

Stress Levels In Seminarians And Spouses Of Seminarians, Martha C. Lintvedt

Theses

Clients frequently present for therapy reporting high levels of stress. While an overview of the literature indicates that clergy are particularly vulnerable to the impact of negative stress, little is written on the evidence of stress among those preparing for the ministry.

This study examines levels of stress in seminarians and spouses of seminarians. The Osipow and Spokane Stress Inventory (Osipow & Spokane , 1988) was utilized to determine stress levels, the degree to which occupational roles match an individual's training, and the coping resources among a sampling of 13 male students preparing for the ministry at Concordia Seminary. On The Analysis Of The Timoshenko Beam Theory With And Without Internal Damping, Chinubhai Doshi Feb 1979

On The Analysis Of The Timoshenko Beam Theory With And Without Internal Damping, Chinubhai Doshi

Theses

The Timoshenko beam equation in terms of variable 'wB' is derived where 'wB’ is the deflection due to the bending of a beam. The equation is used to analyze an infinite beam loaded with (i) a concentrated transverse load and (ii) an impulse. It is also shown that the rotatory damping in the equation eliminates the increasing amplitude in the propagation of the bending moment when an impulse is applied to an infinite beam. Also the general procedure for the anlysis of a non-homogeneous equation is explained.
