The objective of the thesis is to model the behavior of the reaction between two species of bacteria and antibiotics by building an ordinary differential equation (ODE) system under a list of assumptions. With the ODE, we analyze equilibrium points and the stability of these equilibrium points to forecast the trend of each species of bacteria and antibiotics. We test the validity of the model assumptions. Based on these outcomes, we show that: 1. Both equilibrium points and eigenvalues differ in orders of magnitude. 2. The purpose of this evidence-based change in practice project was to provide nurses with an experiential learning opportunity, using simulation, to identify and report near miss events during the medication administration process related to patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) usage. Despite extensive in-service training on a Medical/Surgical (Med/Surg) floor in an acute care hospital, inconsistent, inaccurate and incomplete documentation with use of the new PCA pumps continued to be problematic. A conceptual framework of just culture was used with the quality improvement method of the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle for testing change. The purpose of this project was to develop a video simulation exercise to enhance communication between Registered Nurses (RNs) and Patient Care Assistants (PCAs). From a general microsystem assessment initially performed on an urban hospital medical-surgical unit, 75% of respondents noted that the most pertinent issue to address was improving communication between RNs and PCAs. Literature review of evidence-based practices found several studies that support the use of human clinical simulation to promote teamwork and interdisciplinary communication. Blood specimens are labeled at the time of acquisition in order to identify and match the specimen, label, and order to the patient. While the labeling process is not new, it is frequently laden with errors (Brown, Smith, & Sherfy, 2011). Wrong blood in tube (WBIT) poses significant risk. Multiple factors contribute to mislabeling errors, including lax policies, limited technological solutions, decentralized labeling processes, multi-tasking, distraction from the clinician, and insufficient education and training of staff. The purpose of the study was to identify anesthesia clinical core competencies that are appropriate for evaluating proficiency utilizing High Fidelity Human Simulation (HFHS). This purpose was achieved by identifying the perceptions of nurse anesthesia educational program administrators and faculty regarding the anesthesia clinical core competencies that are appropriate for evaluating proficiency utilizing HFHS. Participants completed a 50-item web-based survey instrument and demographic questionnaire (Anesthesia Core Competency and Simulation Survey). Molecular modeling can also provide a fully understood test system for the application of theoretical methods. The power of a model lies in the accuracy of the parameter values which govern its mathematical behavior. Several fish populations in Kansas are heavily exploited. To obtain insight into the response of fish populations to management actions, fisheries biologists must obtain as much information as possible with limited resources. To address these challenges, biologists often use age and growth information to understand the age structure of the populations, estimate recruitment and mortality, and gain insight into environmental and genetic factors influencing growth. Photonic crystals serve as powerful building blocks for the development of lab-on-chip devices. Currently they are used for a wide range of miniaturized optical components such as extremely compact waveguides to refractive-index based optical sensors. Here we propose a new technique for analyzing and characterizing cells through the design of a micro-flow cytometer using photonic crystals. Current methods of mapping forest canopy structure often result in data products that are limited in resolution, coverage, or ease of access. On-demand processing introduces several new ways in which existing data products can be combined and re-purposed, mitigating some of these limitations. In this research, we investigate several methods of extending the spatial and temporal resolution, coverage, and accessibility of existing forest canopy datasets by processing them on demand. These methods include downscaling coarse-resolution canopy height data dynamically to estimate height at 30 m and 1 m resolution for any location within the contiguous United States. To address this challenge, I present a GPU-based parallel implementation for simulating large elastic deformation. This association is thought to be caused by (1) social influence, where ones social network influences his or her drinking, and (2) social selection, where an individual forms relationships with individuals who drink at similar levels. These feedback mechanisms rely on metrics by which to grade any alterations made to the schedule of the multi-threaded application. A novel finite element capable of arbitrary cracking in solids under coupled thermo-mechanical loading has been formulated and implemented into the commercial software package ABAQUS as a user-defined element. The thermal-mechanical augmented finite element method (TM-AFEM) is an extension of the Augmented Finite Element Method (A-FEM) which includes temperature degrees of freedom (DoFs) so steady-state or transient temperature evolution and their direct effects on fracture processes in solids can be explicitly considered.
