A team effort led by the author developed and implemented a model program designed to improve fifth grade students’ knowledge of music history through computer- assisted instruction. The goals of the program were to have the student be able to identify the different periods of music history, music styles of those periods, composers and various writing styles of the composers. The program contained four basic components: pre-test, implementation, post-test and results. After the fifth grade students were randomly chosen, a pre-test was conducted and the implementation began. "Study In Grey", A One-Act Opera (Original Composition);; And The History Of The Louisiana State University Festival Of Contemporary Music., David Penri-Evans

This dissertation is in two parts. The first part is an original one-act opera, Study in Grey, the second is a history of the Louisiana State University Festival of Contemporary Music. Study in Grey makes use of a libretto by Michael Coy (which he titled "After the Sacrifice") about General Robert E. Lee the night before the surrender of his troops at Appomattox Court House in 1865. There are three characters: General Robert E. Lee--baritone, Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Marshall (Lee's aide-de-camp)--tenor, and a black orderly--spoken. An Investigation Of The Public High School Band Programs Of A Large City In Southeast Louisiana, Including Attitudes Of Senior Band Students., Earl Jacob Fox Jr

The major purpose of this study was to investigate the public high school band programs of a large city in southeast Louisiana. A secondary purpose was to gather attitudes of senior band students toward their respective programs. Anonymity for the school district studied was guaranteed through a contractual agreement signed with the local school board. Data for the investigation were collected through the use of two original questionnaires devised to gather information from band directors and senior band members. Fourteen instrumental teachers participated in this study along with one hundred seventy-six students. Results from this study reveal that the majority …

The Status Of Modal Counterpoint In Selected Colleges And Universities In The United States And A Survey Of Selected Modal Counterpoint Textbooks (Sixteenth-Century)., John Peter Senick

A questionnaire was devised to determine the general status of modal counterpoint classes in selected colleges and universities in the United States and to discover the most-used modal counterpoint textbooks, specifically those exhibiting the direct approach; it was sent to 152 NASM approved schools, and 117 (76.97%) responses were obtained. Information was requested about the types of counterpoint classes offered, the respondents' ratings of the modal counterpoint texts they use, teaching aids and techniques, and ways in which modal counterpoint is included in the music curriculum. Ninety-one (77.8%) of the 117 responding institutions included modal counterpoint in their course offerings. …

Each of Ned Rorem's published song cycles has been inspected for the following: poet(s) and literary theme(s); excerptability of individual songs; difficulty of individual songs (rated easy, moderately easy, or difficult); accompanimental instrument(s); and apparent cyclic interval(s), motive(s), or melody(ies). This study examined the effect of music therapy on the reduction of depression and anxiety in adolescent females. A literature review with a focus on music therapy is presented. In this study "music therapy" consisted of weekly group sessions in which subjects selected, listened to, and discussed pieces of music according to a particular theme assigned by the experimenter. A quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control group design was utilized. Pre- and post-test measures consisted of the Beck Depression Inventory and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. A final questionnaire measuring subject opinion regarding music therapy was administered to the experimental group. No significant difference …

Franz Liszt's transcriptions of his own works and the works of others represent a significant segment of his keyboard compositions. These transcriptions (and his numerous revisions of them) provide opportunities for studying the development of his compositional styles. For example, the four versions of three Petrarch sonnets reveal the manner in which he used his own basic musical material in two different areas of performance (that is, vocal and keyboard), and they illuminate the path he took that led to his late style. Leonard Bernstein has written three sets of dedicatory piano miniatures: Seven Anniversaries (1943), Four Anniversaries (1948), and Five Anniversaries (1949-51). Each piece is in honor of a close friend, relative, or family member of a friend of the composer. The titles bear the names of the respective dedicatees (for example, "For Aaron Copland"); the titles in all but the first set also include the date of birth.
