Characterizing The Function Of B Cells That Accumulate In The Inflamed Central Nervous System In Anti-Myelin Autoimmunity, Lika Chowdhury Dec 2022

Characterizing The Function Of B Cells That Accumulate In The Inflamed Central Nervous System In Anti-Myelin Autoimmunity, Lika Chowdhury

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

While the role of autoimmune T cells has been extensively studied in anti-myelin

autoimmunity, little is known about the function of B cells in multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS). B cells form clusters with T cells in the meninges directly adjacent to demyelinating lesions. Previous studies have shown that disease progression is dependent on the depletion of specific populations of B cells, but it is not clear which contributes to pathology or how. The purpose of this thesis is to characterize the population of meningeal B cells to determine how they differ …

Rapid Rhino Vs. Merocel: A Retrospective Analysis Of Patients With Anterior Epistaxis Visiting Emergency Rooms In London, Ontario, Dhatri Shukla Dec 2022

Rapid Rhino Vs. Merocel: A Retrospective Analysis Of Patients With Anterior Epistaxis Visiting Emergency Rooms In London, Ontario, Dhatri Shukla

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

When patients present to an emergency room (ER) with a nosebleed, one technique that physicians employ is the application of nasal packing. Merocel is a common nasal pack utilized in ER because of their low cost. Rapid Rhino is a nasal packing that is more comfortable for patients but is more costly than Merocel. Costing for epistaxis treatment is more than initial treatment costs and needs to consider rebleed rates. Using a retrospective cohort study design with covariates adjusted by propensity scores, we compared the costs associated with Merocel, and Rapid Rhino from the hospital and provincial healthcare perspectives. Merocel …

S100a7 As A Biomarker For Predicting Transformation In A Potentially Malignant Lesion: Lichen Planus., Jeff J. Lovell Dec 2022

S100a7 As A Biomarker For Predicting Transformation In A Potentially Malignant Lesion: Lichen Planus., Jeff J. Lovell

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Oral Lichen Planus (OLP) is a potentially malignant disorder that has a malignant transformation rate of approximately 1%. Current management includes incisional biopsy and grading of dysplasia, if present. This may not be a reliable predictive tool for malignant transformation. Tissue biomarkers such as S100A7 may provide a more accurate method of risk determination. The proposed mechanism is an association between S100A7 and the MAPK signalling pathway. Paraffin embedded sections of OLP that progressed and did not progress on serial biopsy were selected. The tissues were stained via S100A7 immunohistochemistry. S100A7 was quantified using an Immunoreactivity score, QuPath and StraticyteÔ. …

Towards Parking Lot Occupancy Assessment Using Aerial Imagery And Computer Vision, John Jewell Dec 2022

Towards Parking Lot Occupancy Assessment Using Aerial Imagery And Computer Vision, John Jewell

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Advances in Computer Vision and Aerial Imaging have enabled countless downstream applications. To this end, aerial imagery could be leveraged to analyze the usage of parking lots. This would enable retail centres to allocate space better and eliminate the parking oversupply problem. With this use case in mind, the proposed research introduces a novel framework for parking lot occupancy assessments. The framework consists of a pipeline of components that map a sequence of image sets spanning a parking lot at different time intervals to a parking lot turnover heatmap that encodes the frequency each parking stall was used. The pipeline …

Nitrogen Transfer From Cover Crops To The Subsequent Grain Crop And The Influence Of Variability In Winter Conditions, Spencer Heuchan Dec 2022

Nitrogen Transfer From Cover Crops To The Subsequent Grain Crop And The Influence Of Variability In Winter Conditions, Spencer Heuchan

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Cover crops, which are used to provide ground cover after the harvest of the grain crop, can potentially improve the sustainability of agroecosystems by reducing nutrient losses. However, few data are available to document the extent to which cover crops improve both the retention of soil nitrogen (N) and the transfer of this N to the grain crop. The efficiency of this N transfer may be further influenced by variation in winter soil temperature; for example, reduced snow cover can increase the frequency and intensity of soil freezing, which can affect the survival of cover crops and the timing of …

Folk Theories, Recommender Systems, And Human-Centered Explainable Artificial Intelligence (Hcxai), Michael Ridley Dec 2022

Folk Theories, Recommender Systems, And Human-Centered Explainable Artificial Intelligence (Hcxai), Michael Ridley

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This study uses folk theories to enhance human-centered “explainable AI” (HCXAI). The complexity and opacity of machine learning has compelled the need for explainability. Consumer services like Amazon, Facebook, TikTok, and Spotify have resulted in machine learning becoming ubiquitous in the everyday lives of the non-expert, lay public. The following research questions inform this study: What are the folk theories of users that explain how a recommender system works? Is there a relationship between the folk theories of users and the principles of HCXAI that would facilitate the development of more transparent and explainable recommender systems? Using the Spotify music …

Examining The Socio-Economic And Gendered Structure Of Canada's Live-In Caregiver Program: A Qualitative Study Of Filipina Women's Health Experiences, Andrea Bobadilla Dec 2022

Examining The Socio-Economic And Gendered Structure Of Canada's Live-In Caregiver Program: A Qualitative Study Of Filipina Women's Health Experiences, Andrea Bobadilla

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The primary aim of this critical ethnographic study was to examine how Filipina women in the Canadian live-in caregiver program (LCP) negotiate their own physical and mental well-being while managing the complex health needs of their clients. Using global care chain and postcolonial theoretical frameworks, I also sought to identify how multi-scalar forces including caregiving and migrant policies in Canada and South East Asia exacerbate pre-existing gendered and labour inequities faced by these women. The distressing impact of this precarious form of employment on family dynamics and relationships among family members in the Philippines was also explored. Data collection took …

Advances In The Automatic Detection Of Optimization Opportunities In Computer Programs, Delaram Talaashrafi Dec 2022

Advances In The Automatic Detection Of Optimization Opportunities In Computer Programs, Delaram Talaashrafi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Massively parallel and heterogeneous systems together with their APIs have been used for various applications. To achieve high-performance software, the programmer should develop optimized algorithms to maximize the system’s resource utilization. However, designing such algorithms is challenging and time-consuming. Therefore, optimizing compilers are developed to take part in the programmer’s optimization burden. Developing effective optimizing compilers is an active area of research. Specifically, because loop nests are usually the hot spots in a program, their optimization has been the main subject of many optimization algorithms. This thesis aims to improve the scope and applicability of performance optimization algorithms used in …

Monitoring Intraventricular Hemorrhage In Preterm Infants, Lilian Mn Kebaya Dec 2022

Monitoring Intraventricular Hemorrhage In Preterm Infants, Lilian Mn Kebaya

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Germinal Matrix-Intraventricular hemorrhage (GMH-IVH) remains a significant cause of adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants. Current management options for GMH-IVH rely on serial 2-dimensional cranial ultrasound (2D cUS) ventricular measurements and clinical signs. A need exists for reliable biomarkers to aid in the early detection of posthemorrhagic ventricular dilatation (PHVD) and cerebral palsy (CP). We incorporated 3-dimensional cranial US (3D cUS) and functional infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to monitor ventricle volumes (VV) and spontaneous functional connectivity (sFC) in preterm infants with GMH-IVH. Infants with severe GMH-IVH who underwent cerebrospinal fluid diversion showed larger VV, which correlated with decreased sFC. Our findings …

Association Of Socioeconomic, Racial, And Regional Factors With In-Hospital Management And Outcomes Of Acute Myocardial Infarction Patients In The United States: National Analyses Of 2.8 Million Admissions, Olivia Haldenby

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Social determinants of health contribute to variations in clinical outcomes among acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients. Using the National Inpatient Sample, we conducted retrospective cohort analyses to evaluate the association of income, race, and geography with in-hospital mortality and revascularization procedures among AMI admissions in the United States from 2015 to 2019. Multilevel logistic regression models were used while accounting for hospital clustering and relevant predictors. A sequential model-building approach produced model 1 (unadjusted patient-level exposures), model 2 (lifestyle factors), model 3 (clinical characteristics), and model 4 (fully adjusted hospital-level factors). We identified 2,798,225 AMI hospitalizations (≥18 years) with 1,567,575 …

Legal Representation For Complainants Of Sexual Violence In The Criminal Justice System: A Proposal To Advance Women's Equality, Karen M. Bellehumeur Dec 2022

Legal Representation For Complainants Of Sexual Violence In The Criminal Justice System: A Proposal To Advance Women's Equality, Karen M. Bellehumeur

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Very few survivors of sexual violence choose to engage the Canadian criminal justice system despite the fact that we expect law to be an effective tool to combat sexual violence. Since the vast majority of sexual violence survivors are female, the criminal justice system is failing women. This failure is largely because of the harm it causes by re-victimizing sexual assault complainants. Much of that harm arises from misunderstandings about trauma and from the existence of rape myths and gender stereotypes.. I argue that the criminal justice system’s treatment of female sexual violence complainants violates their section 7 and 15 …

Design And Evaluation Of Fabric Cooling Channels For Twisted Coiled Actuators, Alex Lizotte Dec 2022

Design And Evaluation Of Fabric Cooling Channels For Twisted Coiled Actuators, Alex Lizotte

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Twisted coiled actuators (TCAs) are biomimetic and inexpensive artificial muscles. To enable their integration into soft robotics, a novel cooling apparatus was designed, consisting of a fabric channel to house the TCA and a miniature air pump for forced convection. The channel was designed to be lightweight, flexible, and easy to integrate into a soft wearable robotic device. The effect that the channel dimensions had on TCA performance (cooling time, heating time, and stroke) was investigated by testing combinations of three widths (6, 8, and 10 mm) and three heights (4, 6, and 8 mm). In general, as the channel …

Development Of A Computationally Efficient Method For Modelling Thermal Energy Storage In Packed Beds Of Spherically Encapsulated Phase Change Material, Colin Jaffray Dec 2022

Development Of A Computationally Efficient Method For Modelling Thermal Energy Storage In Packed Beds Of Spherically Encapsulated Phase Change Material, Colin Jaffray

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

A novel computationally efficient method for modelling melting and solidification processes in packed beds of PCM encapsulated spheres is introduced. The proposed method involves the full discretization of only one centrally located sphere to fully simulate the phase change process, while treating all other spheres in the packed bed as voids with boundary conditions derived from the simulated sphere. At each time step, the computed heat transfer parameters on the exterior surface of the simulated sphere undergoing the phase change process are extracted, and imposed as boundary conditions on surrounding spheres. The proposed method results in a significant reduction in …

Secretion Of Salivary Proteins And Their Interactions, Karla Tonelli Bicalho Crosara Dec 2022

Secretion Of Salivary Proteins And Their Interactions, Karla Tonelli Bicalho Crosara

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Saliva’s clinical application for disease diagnosis and monitoring is limited by incomplete knowledge of salivary protein interactions, the effect of stimulation on the salivary proteome, and if these factors impact protein identification. This thesis expands knowledge of the salivary interactome and effects of stimulation intensity and duration on parotid saliva’s proteome. First, previous in vitro studies identified 43 proteins in the histatin 1-protein network and demonstrated histatin 1’s increased stability in whole saliva when interacting with amylase. We hypothesized that protein-protein-interaction databases could enlarge the histatin 1-protein network. A comprehensive histatin 1-protein network was created using STRING database, merging previous …

On Powerful Qualities, Dean J. Morales Dec 2022

On Powerful Qualities, Dean J. Morales

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The present work is a critical examination of the Powerful Qualities Ontology. Categoricalism affirms that intrinsic properties are quiddistic or qualitative in nature, and Pure Powers Theory affirms that they are by nature powerful. The Powerful Qualities Ontology, though, affirms that intrinsic properties are both qualitative and powerful, and that by being a more robust ontology than both Categoricalism and Pure Powers Theory, it promises to account for more phenomena and solve more problems than these rival theories. Despite its advantages, however, I challenge the feasibility of the Powerful Qualities Ontology. In chapter 1, I define important terms and provide …

Climate change effects are causing a steady increase of previous records both in terms of monetary losses and in fatality occurrence due to severe storms. The frequency and intensity of disaster events are increasing worldwide and areas that were excluded from these extreme weather scenarios in the past, are now looking for solutions to increase the urban resilience. Among others, extreme winds are endangering the built environment, often leading to the breakage of the primary barrier to protect people and property: the building envelope. On May 22nd, 2011, the Joplin tornado killed 161 people, and 14 of those were receiving …

Enhanced Performance Of 3d Electroactive Polymer Transducers Via Hierarchical Structures, Frederick B. Holness Dec 2022

Enhanced Performance Of 3d Electroactive Polymer Transducers Via Hierarchical Structures, Frederick B. Holness

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Conjugated polymers (CPs) are a class of polymers that exhibit a change in size or shape in response to electrical stimuli. The unique combination of electrical and mechanical properties facilitates the fabrication of novel devices in a broad range of applications including: sensors, actuators, and lab-on-a-chip systems. The alternating single and double bonds along the polymer chain of CPs enables their electroactive properties but is also responsible for processability associated with CPs that has limited fabrication methods. Recently a photosensitive CP composite enabling additive manufacturing (AM) of 3D CP structures was developed. However, the introduction of a copolymer for mechanical …

Beginning Teachers’ Development Of Inclusive Practices: A Longitudinal Multiple-Case Study Approach, Tsz-Wing Zita Lau Dec 2022

Beginning Teachers’ Development Of Inclusive Practices: A Longitudinal Multiple-Case Study Approach, Tsz-Wing Zita Lau

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Classroom teachers are expected to have the competencies to teach in inclusive classrooms, with the goal of providing diverse learners the support and opportunities they deserve to learn at their best. However, teachers worldwide have reported their teacher education program was inadequate in preparing them to teach in inclusive classrooms. To address this, Sharma (2018) proposed the 3H framework – the three apprenticeships that preservice teachers should be prepared with to become effective inclusive educators: the heart (attitudes and beliefs of inclusive teachers), the head (knowledge and self-efficacy to teach diverse learners), and the hands (inclusive instructional practices). The goal …

Essays On Privilege And Its Implications For Relational Autonomy And Vaccine Hesitancy, Nicole Fice Dec 2022

Essays On Privilege And Its Implications For Relational Autonomy And Vaccine Hesitancy, Nicole Fice

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

One goal of feminist philosophy is to challenge unjust systems of power like patriarchy, which privilege some social groups while oppressing others. In this three-chapter dissertation, I argue that to achieve this goal, we need a better understanding of privilege and its implications.

In chapter one, I raise objections to some existing philosophical accounts of privilege. These accounts are either too broad in defining privilege as always advantageous or they are vague regarding what privilege comprises. I provide an account of privilege which clarifies that privilege is generally advantageous and that privilege includes tangible resources and options to do certain …

Behavioral Biometrics-Based Continuous User Authentication, Sanket Vilas Salunke Dec 2022

Behavioral Biometrics-Based Continuous User Authentication, Sanket Vilas Salunke

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The field of cybersecurity is exploring new ways to defend against cyber-attacks, including a technique called continuous user authentication. This method uses keystroke (typing) data to continuously match the user's typing pattern with patterns previously recorded using artificial intelligence (AI) to identify the user. While this approach has the potential to improve security, it also has some challenges, including the time it takes to register a user, the performance of machine learning algorithms on real-world data, and latency within the system. In this study, the researchers proposed solutions to these issues by using transfer learning to reduce user registration time, …

The Origin And Evolution Of Impact Crater Lakes: A Case Study Of The Ries Impact Structure, Germany, Matthew J. O. Svensson Dec 2022

The Origin And Evolution Of Impact Crater Lakes: A Case Study Of The Ries Impact Structure, Germany, Matthew J. O. Svensson

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Impact events are known to generate hydrothermal systems, which can subsequently vent into an overlying crater lake and potentially create ideal conditions for some microbial life-forms. Thus, early post-impact sedimentary deposits would be excellent targets for Mars sample return, and as such, the robust characterization of such deposits on Earth is critical. In this thesis, we establish an improved understanding of how the Ries crater lake formed, and how an active impact-generated hydrothermal system influenced its early evolution. The ~14.8 Ma Ries impact structure hosts the majority of its paleolake deposits within the structure's central basin with some deposits situated …

A Novel Passive Islanding Detection Method Based On Phase-Locked Loop, Hoda Zamani Dec 2022

A Novel Passive Islanding Detection Method Based On Phase-Locked Loop, Hoda Zamani

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The ever-increasing penetration of distributed energy resources in power distribution systems has led to challenges in the detection of islanding. Among different islanding detection methods (IDMs), passive methods are the least intrusive and typically require the lowest investment cost. However, they generally suffer from larger non-detection zones (NDZs) and higher nuisance detection ratios as compared to active, hybrid, and remote IDMs. This study provides an overview of the criteria outlined in the existing technical literature for the performance evaluation of IDMs, a review and comparison of the existing passive IDMs, and an analysis of the phase-locked loop (PLL) behaviour under …

Social Determinants Of Access To Primary Care In Canada, Feben W. Alemu Dec 2022

Social Determinants Of Access To Primary Care In Canada, Feben W. Alemu

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Despite the promise of universal care, many Canadians report having unmet healthcare needs. We conducted two studies: (1) a systematic review of studies on social determinants of health (SDH) and unmet need; and (2) a secondary analysis using the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) to investigate the association of SDH and (2a) self-reported unmet need and (2b) having a family physician. The review (n=40) found a positive association between unmet need and lower income, mental health and chronic conditions, and negative association with older age, better perceived health and having a family physician. The CLSA analysis found the odds …

Algorithmic Improvements In Deep Reinforcement Learning, Norman L. Tasfi Dec 2022

Algorithmic Improvements In Deep Reinforcement Learning, Norman L. Tasfi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Reinforcement Learning (RL) has seen exponential performance improvements over the past decade, achieving super-human performance across many domains. Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), the combination of RL methods with deep neural networks (DNN) as function approximators, has unlocked much of this progress. The path to generalized artificial intelligence (GAI) will depend on deep learning (DL) and RL. However, much work is required before the technology reaches anything resembling GAI. Therefore, this thesis focuses on a subset of areas within RL that require additional research to advance the field, specifically: sample efficiency, planning, and task transfer. The first area, sample efficiency, refers …

Simulated And Experimental Approaches To The Development Of Novel Test Phantoms For Radiofrequency Heating Of Implanted Medical Devices, Amgad M. Louka Dec 2022

Simulated And Experimental Approaches To The Development Of Novel Test Phantoms For Radiofrequency Heating Of Implanted Medical Devices, Amgad M. Louka

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has cemented itself as the gold standard for imaging of soft tissues and is only increasing in popularity. Given the rising number of MRI scanners and medical device being implanted into patients, it is becoming increasingly likely that patients undergoing MRI will have an implanted medical device (IMD). The presence of an elongated metallic IMD inside a scanner could result in dangerous interactions with the radiofrequency fields during MRI, thus some of these IMDs preclude the patients from being scanned.

Orthopedic devices typically fall into this category due to their high potential for RF induced heating, …

Discourses Of Tension In A Rainbow Nation: Transcultural Identity Formations Among Hakka Mauritians, Federica Guccini Dec 2022

Discourses Of Tension In A Rainbow Nation: Transcultural Identity Formations Among Hakka Mauritians, Federica Guccini

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Identity formation happens at a crossroads of that which people believe they are and are not. Acknowledgment, reification, or subversion of identity frictions form powerful communicative patterns that I call ‘discourses of tension’. I argue in this dissertation that discourses of tension are foundational to the formation of transcultural identities—positionalities that emerge between or beyond perceived cultural boundaries—because they enable people to identify and express cultural complexities and expectations.

Based on ten months of ethnographic fieldwork and research in other relevant sites, this argument is supported by my analysis of how Hakka Chinese Mauritians express agency and identity within …

Using Stable Isotope Techniques To Complement Existing Northern Pintail Management., Dariusz Wojtaszek Dec 2022

Using Stable Isotope Techniques To Complement Existing Northern Pintail Management., Dariusz Wojtaszek

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The Northern Pintail (Anas acuta) is a waterfowl game species with North American population levels consistently below long-term management goals. Native habitat loss to agriculture likely reduced recruitment and limits population growth. My objective was to provide a proof-of-concept approach to using stable isotope ratios (δ2H, δ13C, δ15N) in feathers to infer spatial origins and habitat selection to complement existing pintail management. I found 46% of all sampled pintails had likely moult origins in the boreal biome, compared to 32% estimated by breeding population survey and 55% of recruitment of young …

Sound Judgements: Music Education Framework For Guiding Digital Mixing Practice, Artur Kapron Dec 2022

Sound Judgements: Music Education Framework For Guiding Digital Mixing Practice, Artur Kapron

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Mixing is an intermediary process within audio production wherein the aesthetic and technical qualities of musical compositions are further enhanced and refined. Most music perceived via audio-playback devices is mixed to sound a certain way. By understanding why recordings ‘sound’ how they do, musicians, music educators, and novice mixers can acquire a greater appreciation for mixing while considering how this process might affect their own performance practices (Hodgson 2019; Fisher, 1998). Knowing how and what to listen for when mixing is highly subjective, as people experience and describe sounds differently. Indeed, mixing is illusory as listeners are presented with an …
