Grassroots Organizations Using Social Media As A Lobbying Technique, Samantha Vo
Grassroots Organizations Using Social Media As A Lobbying Technique, Samantha Vo
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Grassroots organizations provide a way for communities to interact and form around topics through grassroots lobbying and direct lobbying. As the 21st Century is referred to as the Digital Age, many grassroots organizations have found it necessary to expand on their lobbying techniques. Rather than utilizing methods like traditional media, email, phone calls, or text messages, methods involving social media are becoming more prominent as society continues to advance. Social media is a distinctive part of the Digital Age, and as the usage of social media increases in popularity, it can be used to reach a large population of people. …
Retaining Foster Parents In San Bernardino County: Identifying And Accessing Resources And Support Services Since California’S Continuum Of Care Reform, Charles A. Varadin
Retaining Foster Parents In San Bernardino County: Identifying And Accessing Resources And Support Services Since California’S Continuum Of Care Reform, Charles A. Varadin
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Foster care is a vast social justice issue that impacts nearly every local community. Yet, it receives relatively little attention due, in part, to the low social constructs of many of the most affected groups (Schneider and Ingram 1997). Thus, it should come as no surprise that foster care and the child welfare system in California, and the United States in general, is in a crisis as more children enter the system than there are foster parents to care for them. Retention of quality foster parents reduces the need for recruitment and increases the likelihood of more stable placements with …
Algebraic Invariants Of Knot Diagrams On Surfaces, Ryan Martinez
Algebraic Invariants Of Knot Diagrams On Surfaces, Ryan Martinez
HMC Senior Theses
In this thesis we first give an introduction to knots, knot diagrams, and algebraic structures defined on them accessible to anyone with knowledge of very basic abstract algebra and topology. Of particular interest in this thesis is the quandle which "colors" knot diagrams. Usually, quandles are only used to color knot diagrams in the plane or on a sphere, so this thesis extends quandles to knot diagrams on any surface and begins to classify the fundamental quandles of knot diagrams on the torus.
This thesis also breifly looks into Niebrzydowski Tribrackets which are a different algebraic structure which, in future …
Results On The Generalized Covering Radius Of Error Correcting Codes, Benjamin Langton
Results On The Generalized Covering Radius Of Error Correcting Codes, Benjamin Langton
HMC Senior Theses
The recently proposed generalized covering radius is a fundamental property of error correcting codes. This quantity characterizes the trade off between time and space complexity of certain algorithms when a code is used in them. However, for the most part very little is known about the generalized covering radius. My thesis seeks to expand on this field in several ways. First, a new upper bound on this quantity is established and compared to previous bounds. Second, this bound is used to derive a new algorithm for finding codewords within the generalized covering radius of a given vector, and also to …
Community Cultural Wealth Within New Latinx Destinations: Mexican American Narratives Of College Completion In Oregon, Anthony Villarreal
Community Cultural Wealth Within New Latinx Destinations: Mexican American Narratives Of College Completion In Oregon, Anthony Villarreal
CGU Theses & Dissertations
With dramatic population growth and redistribution, Latinx are becoming increasingly dispersed across the country, particularly in states that previously had very few Latinx residents. Considering this phenomenon, there is a need for educational research that does not attempt to operate under the same assumptions within regions where the Latinx presence is long-standing, but rather carefully examines educational outcomes and experiences within the new Latinx destination context. This study explores the college access experiences of 20 Mexican American students within Oregon through a Community Cultural Wealth framework (Yosso, 2005). Participants were recruited through a purposeful sampling approach, accompanied with snowball sampling, …
Essays On Crime And Law, Morgan Elaine Stockham
Essays On Crime And Law, Morgan Elaine Stockham
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Civil law and public policy often are related to crime in complex and interesting ways. The following dissertation explores the intersections of divorce law and public policy with criminal outcomes. Within my first chapter, we attempt to identify the causal effect of wages on a prosecutor’s effort by studying an exogenous salary increase in New York. We measure the performance by the likelihood that a conviction is upheld when appealed. If the efficiency wage theory explains behavior, then the exogenous wage shock should entice better performance. Alternatively, if individuals who hold office are motivated primarily by an intrinsic motivations rather …

First-Year Effects And Persistence Decisions: A Moderated Mediation Model Of Coping, Self-Efficacy, And Locus Of Control, Christina Gramatikova
First-Year Effects And Persistence Decisions: A Moderated Mediation Model Of Coping, Self-Efficacy, And Locus Of Control, Christina Gramatikova
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to estimate the effects of a theoretical model encompassing psychological theories underlying student retention in postsecondary education. New conceptual operationalizations were applied to elaborate Bean and Eaton’s theoretical model of student retention. The influences of student entry characteristics, environmental interactions, psychological processes, attitudes, and intentions toward persistence were assessed using a repeated measures, longitudinal design. Within the framework, persistence is an endogenous variable based on actual re-enrollment into subsequent semesters.Three student samples were drawn from a large urban research university in California. Survey data collected from a first-year seminar and the National Survey of …
The Pervert’S Guide To The Museum, Seth Ifor Alt
The Pervert’S Guide To The Museum, Seth Ifor Alt
CGU Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation provides a sustained theoretical articulation of core Lacanian psychoanalytic concepts situated within the standing difficulties in the practice and theory of museums. Drawing upon research gathered from site visits, informational interviews, textual analysis, and an extensive engagement with the seminars of Jacques Lacan, I enumerate here a first attempt at what a Lacanian theoretical formation can contribute to museum studies scholarship. Through this research this dissertation shows psychoanalysis to be especially useful for museum studies owing to how the troubles immediately encountered in the everyday material practices of museological work are structurally analogous to the impossibilities experienced on …
Bridging Psychometric And Cognitive Models Of (General) Intelligence: An Investigation Based On Process Overlap Theory, Han Hao
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Human intelligence has been scientifically investigated as a psychological construct for over a century but there has not been a universally accepted definition or theory. One cause of this problem is that traditional theories attempt to explain the robust findings in cognitive ability testing, such as the positive manifold, from two different perspectives: psychometric or cognitive. Both approaches have their own limitations and are sometimes incompatible with each other. Therefore, contemporary theories of intelligence have been developed to provide a more unified perspective by combining both types of approaches, allowing the psychometric structure of cognitive abilities to be represented and …
Economic And Financial Factors Affecting Currency Stability Of Floating Exchange Rate Regimes: A Survival Analysis, Istvan Zambori
Economic And Financial Factors Affecting Currency Stability Of Floating Exchange Rate Regimes: A Survival Analysis, Istvan Zambori
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Currency crises can wreak havoc on countries economically, financially, and politically. This study has been conducted in the spirit of attempting to find a general notion of why such crises occur. The aim is to describe, based on empirical evidence, a general time dependent evolution of currency crisis probabilities. Furthermore, the goal is to uncover general and systemic variables driving currency crises. The research utilizes survival analysis. Durations of tranquility are used to determine probabilities of crises. In turn, economic and financial variables are used to test possible linkages to these crises. In the study, durations of tranquil periods are …
Excessive Stakeholder Evaluation Anxiety (Xsea): Helping Your Stakeholder Find Their Sea Legs With Program Evaluation, Samantha B. Langan
Excessive Stakeholder Evaluation Anxiety (Xsea): Helping Your Stakeholder Find Their Sea Legs With Program Evaluation, Samantha B. Langan
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Fear of negative evaluation from others is an innate human characteristic. When a program is being evaluated and program staff are involved in evaluation activities, these stakeholders are allowing their services and by extension, themselves, to be examined by evaluators. Consequently, program evaluation can be an anxiety-inducing and uncomfortable experience for program staff. In instances when stakeholders are highly anxious over the prospect of having their program evaluated, they are said to be experiencing excessive stakeholder evaluation anxiety (XSEA). Prior to this study few researchers had empirically examined XSEA, though initial evidence suggested that stakeholders with XSEA employed coping strategies …
In Their Own Words: An Exploration Of The Educational Experiences Of Black, Indigenous Girls And Gender Expansive Youth Of Color In Foster Care, Franchesca Ocasio
In Their Own Words: An Exploration Of The Educational Experiences Of Black, Indigenous Girls And Gender Expansive Youth Of Color In Foster Care, Franchesca Ocasio
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Research on Black, Indigenous, and girls and gender expansive youth of color in foster care is limited. Though, existing research in education, sociology, and psychology suggests that these individuals enter foster care at higher rates than their counterparts due to interpersonal and structural violence. In the system, racialized and gendered stereotypes influence how they are perceived by educators and lead to increased discipline in schools. Given this landscape, this work seeks to understand the educational experiences of BIPOC girls and gender-expansive youth in foster care and the ways they navigate mistreatment by educators. In the tradition of Critical Race Theorists, …
Jemimas, Jockeys, And Jolly Banks: The Racial Discourse Of Black Collectibles, Conrad Pruitt
Jemimas, Jockeys, And Jolly Banks: The Racial Discourse Of Black Collectibles, Conrad Pruitt
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Over the last thirty years, an industry in black racist memorabilia has resurged. Bolstered by online commerce, social media trade, and a robust reproduction market, racist collectibles continue to circulate despite their functional obsolescence or presumed incongruity with current views of race. Many of these objects originated in the late nineteenth century, where the emergence of black citizenship was seen as a threat to a racial caste structure that ensured white supremacy. Following the impetus for supremacy that defined the Jim Crow era, the collectibles sought to crystallize conceptions of inherent black inferiority. The presumption that these originary conditions and …
On Coherence And The Geometry Of Certain Families Of Lattices, David Booth Kogan
On Coherence And The Geometry Of Certain Families Of Lattices, David Booth Kogan
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The coherence of a lattice is, roughly speaking, a measure of non-orthogonality of its minimal vectors. It was introduced to lattices (by analogy with frame theory) by L. Fukshansky and others as a possible route to gaining insight into packing density, a central problem in lattice theory. In this work, we introduce the related measure of average coherence, explore connections between packing density and coherence, and prove several properties of certain families of lattices, most notably nearly orthogonal lattices, cyclotomic lattices, and cyclic lattices.
Critical- Diversity, Belongingness, Inclusion, And Equity Sel, Jeanny Eliana Marroquin
Critical- Diversity, Belongingness, Inclusion, And Equity Sel, Jeanny Eliana Marroquin
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The social and civil unrest across the United States has ignited a call for more school-based social and emotional learning (SEL) frameworks and practices that are social justice-oriented. The Collaborative for Academic and Social Emotional Learning (CASEL) is one of the organizations that chose to revisit their existing SEL framework and introduced transformative SEL as an attempt to take steps toward creating a more social justice-oriented approach. This critique will review the SEL landscape of some pre-K-12 SEL programs and their methods to highlight gaps and limitations in the fields for future research considerations. Then, a new social and emotional …
The Intended Heroic Behavior Scale: Creation And Validity Of A Scale Predicting Heroism To Advance Developmental Research On Heroes, Brian R. Riches
The Intended Heroic Behavior Scale: Creation And Validity Of A Scale Predicting Heroism To Advance Developmental Research On Heroes, Brian R. Riches
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Heroism – the phenomenon of individuals putting themselves at risk for the benefit of others – is a topic of increasing empirical interest (Franco et al., 2017). Applied heroism training programs have emerged with the goal of fostering heroism (Heiner, 2018). Psychologists have examined the characteristics of heroes (e.g., Midlarsky et al., 2005) and the power of the situation to drive ordinary people to heroic action (Franco et al., 2017). These studies have raised important questions, such as how can heroism be predicted? Does heroism training work? And how do heroes develop? Current methods of studying heroism, including exemplar studies, …
The Future Of Plastics Trade: Identifying Determinants And Impacts Of The Shifting Global Plastic Scraps Network, Ana Ortiz Salazar
The Future Of Plastics Trade: Identifying Determinants And Impacts Of The Shifting Global Plastic Scraps Network, Ana Ortiz Salazar
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Plastic waste management is an area of increasing concern for environmental and public health. Existing research shows that as of 2019, 79% of total generated plastic waste has accumulated in landfills or leaked into the environment, 12% incinerated, and 9% recycled. China’s Operation National Sword, launched in 2017, banned the import of plastic waste and other materials, triggering ripple effects throughout the global plastic scraps trade network. The impacts are cross-sectoral and multi-scalar, cascading across markets, policy, the natural environment, public health, and have increased uncertainty about the future of the global trade of plastics. To understand shifts across the …
Teacher Perceptions Of Relationship Building With Students: A Case Study Of K-5 Schools In A Southern California School District, Anais Janoyan
Teacher Perceptions Of Relationship Building With Students: A Case Study Of K-5 Schools In A Southern California School District, Anais Janoyan
CGU Theses & Dissertations
This mixed methods case study of K-5 schools in a medium sized Southern California school district, investigated teachers’ descriptions and perceptions of their teacher-student relationships and relationship building experiences with students. Teachers’ views were analyzed at district, school site, and individual levels to uncover both common and unique patterns across these various contexts. Surveys and interviews were used to gather data. Surveys were quantitatively analyzed, and interviews underwent a qualitative thematic analysis but were also supported by quantitative data (e.g., code recurrence frequencies and percentages). Data results of teachers’ descriptions and perceptions on teacher-student relationships provided teachers’ overall views, in …
Let’S Have A Playdate! Comparing Autistic Children's Social Behavior During Play Sessions With Siblings Versus Peers, Clare Boldt
Let’S Have A Playdate! Comparing Autistic Children's Social Behavior During Play Sessions With Siblings Versus Peers, Clare Boldt
Scripps Senior Theses
Autistic individuals can struggle with social interactions and forming friendships. While siblings and peers are used for social skills intervention, there is a paucity of research analyzing differences in autistic children’s play with siblings versus peers. Investigating these behavior differences helps clinicians learn how to best support social skill development, improve sibling relationships, and determine ideal peer mediators for interventions. I compare social behaviors of autistic children during play sessions with their sibling versus a non-sibling peer. The behaviors measured were prosocial behaviors, cooperative and parallel play, verbalizations (appropriate and inappropriate), aggressive behaviors, eloping, and stereotypy. Based on previous literature, …
Alternatives To Immigrant Detention Under Biden: Expansion Of Immigrant Industrial Complex, Amber Chong
Alternatives To Immigrant Detention Under Biden: Expansion Of Immigrant Industrial Complex, Amber Chong
Scripps Senior Theses
This article examines the political reasons for the expansion of alternatives to detention (ATD) for immigrants under President Joe Biden’s administration. Enrollment in ATDs has doubled since the beginning of Biden’s presidency in January 2021, a stark growth after over ⅔ of voters polled by the ACLU said they would support the elimination of private immigrant detention centers. To understand the growth of ATD, I analyze the bipartisan expansion of immigrant detention and militarization of the U.S. Mexico border, discussing the Democratic Party’s history of criminalizing immigrants and bolstering surveillance in service of racist notions of “national security.” I then …
Why Do Rich People Not Retire?, Xiya Li
Why Do Rich People Not Retire?, Xiya Li
Scripps Senior Theses
Work and leisure are central to the human condition. Scholars from many fields have tried to understand why Americans work so much. Many people believe that when they have enough money, they will retire. However, many people are not willing to retire even if they have enough money to do so. Most people who do not have enough money to retire do not even get any amount of leisure from their jobs. If the view that enough money directly leads to retirement is wrong, then it is time to reconsider using this logic to think of the possibility of retiring. …
Men Who Conquered & The Women Who Mov'd Them, Nikita Chinamanthur
Men Who Conquered & The Women Who Mov'd Them, Nikita Chinamanthur
Scripps Senior Theses
Considering John Dryden’s Aureng-Zebe and Christopher Marlowe’s Tamburlaine the Great, this thesis examines how drama shaped popular ideas of the Indian subcontinent in Renaissance England. This thesis engages in a comparative analysis of formal choices such as doubling, tripling, and etymology to assess the efficacy of two incomplete portrayals of South Asia configured as women.
Dynamism, Domination, & Illusion: How The Los Angeles Garment Industry (Ab)Uses Its Power In A Globalized Market, Katherine Ward
Dynamism, Domination, & Illusion: How The Los Angeles Garment Industry (Ab)Uses Its Power In A Globalized Market, Katherine Ward
Scripps Senior Theses
The Los Angeles fashion industry presents an exception to the rule of offshore production in the increasingly globalized world market. This thesis conducts an in-depth examination of the Los Angeles fashion industry, specifically focusing on its laborers, manufacturers, and retailers, in order to better understand how Los Angeles is able to feasibly compete with and thrive in the globalized fashion industry. Utilizing organizational metaphors, this thesis examines dynamics of transformation and of power as applied to laborers, manufacturers, and retailers in Los Angeles. Divided into two primary constituents, laborers and owners of capital, I posit the levels of power held …

Examining Soil Microbial Diversity In Transition Zones Between Corn Fields And Restored Prairie In The Upper Midwest, Anna M. Burns
Examining Soil Microbial Diversity In Transition Zones Between Corn Fields And Restored Prairie In The Upper Midwest, Anna M. Burns
Scripps Senior Theses
Prairies were once the largest ecosystem in North America, but agriculture and settlement has destroyed up to 99% of their pre-colonization extent. Prairie restorations are a strategy to recover the biodiversity and carbon sequestration functions of these grasslands, but typically occur in isolated strips between agricultural fields. My thesis analyzes how effective prairie restorations in the Liberty Prairie (northeastern Illinois) are at recovering the diversity of the prairie soil microbiome, focusing on verrucomicrobia abundance, alpha diversity, and soil physical characteristics.
"All That Remains Of Husband", James L. Kleerup
"All That Remains Of Husband", James L. Kleerup
Scripps Senior Theses
Within Book 4 of Virgil’s Aeneid, the question of marriage is repeatedly raised. Specifically, it is debated whether or not Dido and Aeneas are married. This question is hotly debated by both the characters and scholars, as the answer is not definitively given within the text. This paper seeks to provide an answer, as the contemporary Roman reader would likely have interpreted their relationship, and also address why Virgil remained purposefully vague. Within Book 4, three key scenes are examined: the discussion between Juno and Venus where Juno proposes the wedding, the cave scene, and Dido and Aeneas’ argument …
The Tree Of Life: Observations From The Olive Grove, Kendall Lowery
The Tree Of Life: Observations From The Olive Grove, Kendall Lowery
Scripps Senior Theses
Scripps College is famous for its olive trees and the award-winning olive oil that they produce. However, despite the considerable age of the trees, the campus community has only harvested the annual crop of olives for the past decade. In this thesis, I set out to learn why the trees were planted on the campus in the first place. To this end, I immerse myself in the history, culture, and commerce of the olive oil industry, and ultimately use the fruit as a lens through which we can explore the colonial history of Scripps College and Southern California. In order …
Choreographing The Line: Exploring The Art/Obscenity Paradox Of Feminine Sexuality Within The Context Of Recreational Pole Dance, Cameron Boucher-Khan
Choreographing The Line: Exploring The Art/Obscenity Paradox Of Feminine Sexuality Within The Context Of Recreational Pole Dance, Cameron Boucher-Khan
Scripps Senior Theses
This project seeks to explore the relationships between pole dance and pole fitness, art and obscenity and respectability as it relates to work, class, and social systems. It analyzes the way female sexuality is accepted or rejected within society and explores the boundaries between the two through the staging of pole and contemporary dance. The dichotomy between art and obscenity is explored in the relationship between stripper pole dance, and the fast-growing pole fitness community. Within this relationship, strippers are demonized as obscene, while pole fitness dancers' labor is viewed as artistic, despite the sexuality present in both. The difference …
Power In Numbers: An Abundance Of Small Corals Responsible For Storing Over Half Of The Carbon Stored By All Alaskan Primnoa Pacifica Deep-Sea Corals, Sylvie Alexander
Power In Numbers: An Abundance Of Small Corals Responsible For Storing Over Half Of The Carbon Stored By All Alaskan Primnoa Pacifica Deep-Sea Corals, Sylvie Alexander
Scripps Senior Theses
Gorgonian deep-sea corals (DSCs) are biologically linked to ocean carbon cycling converting ocean carbon to gorgonin and calcite in their skeletons. As such, gorgonian DSCs likely accumulate and store carbon in their skeleton throughout their lifespans, acting as carbon sinks on historic timescales. Yet, DSC carbon storage hasn’t been investigated to date. This study evaluates gorgonian DSC carbon storage capacity through an evaluation of the carbon stored by Alaskan Primnoa pacifica corals. The development of a model relating coral height to biomass in specimens with this data available was used to determine biomass values in a suite of Alaskan P. …
