On Local Stresses And Spring Constants Of Pipe-Nozzle Connection, Hson-Chih Sun Dec 1990

On Local Stresses And Spring Constants Of Pipe-Nozzle Connection, Hson-Chih Sun

Dissertations

This thesis presents a comprehensive study of local stresses and spring coefficients of pipe with a nozzle connection, analyzed by the finite element method (FEM). Six types of loading are discussed: radial force, circumferential moment, longitudinal moment, circumferential shear force, longitudinal shear force, and torsional moment.

For the local stresses, the bending and membrane stress factors due to each of these loadings are presented in a series of plots with various gamma (piping radius/thick-ness) and beta (nozzle radius/pipe radius) values. These stress factors will readily replace those previously published in WRC No. 107. This work not only gives more accurate …

Integrated Component-Based Computer Design Modeling System : The Implications Of The Representation Of Control Parameters On The Design Process, Allen D. Jablonski Dec 1990

Integrated Component-Based Computer Design Modeling System : The Implications Of The Representation Of Control Parameters On The Design Process, Allen D. Jablonski

Theses

The design process is dependent on a clear order of integrating and managing all of the control parameters that impact on a building's design. All component elements of a building must be defined by their: Physical and functional relations; Quantitative and calculable properties; Component and/or system functions. This requires a means of representation to depict a model of a building that can be viewed and interpreted by a variety of interested parties. These parties need different types of representation to address their individual control parameters, as each component instance has specific implications on all of the control parameters.

Representations are …

Preparation And Testing Of Novel Blocked Isocyanate Dental Adhesives Based Upon Hydroxyhexylmethacrylate, Yunwen Ye

Theses

A new kind of dental adhesive, O-Chlorophenol-TDI-HEMA-Pentaerythritol (TDI), was studied under long term conditions. The test was done in human third molar teeth which had been extracted 7 days to 6 months. Both citric acid and non citric acid pre-treatments were used on dentin surfaces. Based on Causton's[9] mineralizing solution pre-treatment method, we have used 3 kinds of mineralizing solutions, ITS, 0.5% CaCl2, NaF, as pre-treatment solutions. There were no significant differences between the citric acid and non citric acid pre-treatment. The ITS mineralizing solution pre-treatment caused a large increase in bond strength. The average bond strength of 1791 psi …

Adaptive Stack Filtering By Lms And Perceptron Learning, Yu-Chou Huang Dec 1990

Adaptive Stack Filtering By Lms And Perceptron Learning, Yu-Chou Huang

Theses

Stack filters are a class of sliding?window nonlinear digital filters that possess the weak superposition property(threshold decomposition) and the ordering property known as the stacking property. They have been demonstrated to be robust in suppressing noise. Two methods are introduced in this thesis to adaptively configure a stack filter. One is by employing the Least Mean Square(LMS) algorithm and the other is based on Perceptron learning.

Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of our methods to noise suppression.

Search Designs And Other Topic In Fractional Replication., Kashinath Chatterjee Dr.

Doctoral Theses

This thesis primarily deals with search designs (see Srivastava (1975)) of various types for general symmetric and asymmetric factorials. The thesis also considers some other types on fractional factorials. We have made use of Kronecker products and various other results from matrix theory. In the first four chapters, different types of search designs have been studied. Chapter 5A considers the construction of orthogonal main-effect plans for general factorial experiments under the presence of a linear time trend. Chapter 5B extends the calculus for factorial arrangements to a fractional factorial set-up and examines critically the proportional frequency plans from the point of …

Through Thick And Thin: Evolutionary Transitions Of Las Vegas Grandes And Its Pobladores, Anselmo F. Arellano Dec 1990

Through Thick And Thin: Evolutionary Transitions Of Las Vegas Grandes And Its Pobladores, Anselmo F. Arellano

American Studies ETDs

Near the end of the Spanish Colonial Period in New Mexico, Hispano and mestizo citizens from the Santa Fe and San Miguel del Bado area cast their eyes on some longed-for fertile grazing lands called las vegas grandes en el Rio de las Gallinas. Due to constant prevailing forays by Indians during this epoch, initial settlement efforts failed, but in 1835 a new thrust from San Miguel del Bado led to the permanent settlement of one of the last community land grants conceded in New Mexico during the Mexican Period.

This dissertation concerns itself with the history and culture of …

A Study For A Lexicon Of Laguna Keresan, Hilaire Paul Valiquette Dec 1990

A Study For A Lexicon Of Laguna Keresan, Hilaire Paul Valiquette

Anthropology ETDs

Laguna Keres is one of seven Keresan dialects spoken by the Pueblo peoples in New Mexico. The present study focuses on lexical categories in general, and on verb morphology and classification in particular. Language can be construed either as a system governed by universal rules, or as an idiosyncratic listing; the two constructions balance and define each other. In language description, these two approaches usually appear as "grammars" or "lexicons". For Laguna Keres, I argue that division into lexical categories and sub-categories must be based on semantics, morphology, syntax, and phonology.

After a sketch of Laguna Keres, I review previous …

Characterizing Fines To Predict Their Performance In A Sheet Of Paper, Rodney W. Tibboles Dec 1990

Characterizing Fines To Predict Their Performance In A Sheet Of Paper, Rodney W. Tibboles

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Many studies have been performed with the purpose of determining the effects of fines on paper properties. However, many of these studies fail to develop characterizations of the fines themselves before relating the presence of these fines to sheet properties. This study first developed complete characterizations of fines and then related the properties of the fines to properties of paper containing these fines.

Bleached kraft, unbleached kraft, and TMP pulps from a southern pine were used in this project. Characterization of the fines included determination of physical features of the fines, size distribution, water retention value (WRV), drainability, and compressibility. …

The Magmatic History Of An Aubrite Parent Asteroid: Evidence From Igneous Clasts And Trace Elements, Maya Monica Wheelock Dec 1990

The Magmatic History Of An Aubrite Parent Asteroid: Evidence From Igneous Clasts And Trace Elements, Maya Monica Wheelock

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Norton County aubrite contains numerous igneous-textured clasts that survived severe brecciation. These clasts were studied in order to obtain information about the suite of original igneous lithologies that crystallized on an aubrite parent body. The majority of igneous clasts are pyroxenites (enstatite, with minor diopside, +/- forsterite) and orthopyroxenites (enstatite, +/- forsterite). Phase relations and textural evidence are consistent with formation from a nearly pure enstatite magma body or magma ocean, at (or near) the surface of the parent body.

A new sulfide-dominated lithology was identified in Norton County. The sulfide portion is dominated by coarse-grained oldhamite (CaS) containing rounded …

Peephole Optimization Of Assembly Language Using Regular Expression Pattern Matching., Bill Mahoney Dec 1990

Peephole Optimization Of Assembly Language Using Regular Expression Pattern Matching., Bill Mahoney

Student Work

Producing compilers for high level computer languages is difficult. The early phases of the compiler, syntactical and lexical analysis, are well understood and have been automated. Code generation is more ad-hoc in both design and implementation. The code generators in use may be sufficiently complex that the output could benefit from additional optimization. This thesis describes current efforts . to produce peephole optimizers which perform optimizations on the compiler output. A case is presented for basing optimizations on human written rules. A peephole optimizer generator is presented which reads a rule language which includes regular expressions and produces an executable …

The Chronic Pain sample in this study scored significantly higher than a Normal sample in their preference for Introversion, Sensing and Judging and were significantly more likely to be the personality types ISFJ or ISTJ.

This study also examines the relationship between MMPI depression scores and Myers-Briggs Introversion scores and the results tend to confirm …

Golf Courses In Omaha: A Recreational Geography And Land Use Study, Michael H. Mcintyre Dec 1990

Golf Courses In Omaha: A Recreational Geography And Land Use Study, Michael H. Mcintyre

Student Work

The study inspected the provision of golf courses in Omaha along with surrounding patterns of land use development adjacent to each of the courses. National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) provided guidelines to assess the provision of golf to the city, which determined that Omaha was extensively overserved and overdeveloped. The NRPA does not indicate course type to assess the quantity of courses to adequately serve a community and therefore it was proposed that perhaps Omaha has not been overbuilt in the provison of golf to the community. It was also proposed that the golf course does not stand alone …

The aim of this project was to offer comparisons among hospitalized adolescent suicide "attempters" and "non-attempters", and outpatient adolescent suicide "attempters" and "non-attempters". The data was then compared with data from non-hospitalized adolescents nationally. The study was designed as a systematic investigation of archival data. The data was taken from hospital records including interview forms and psychological evaluations. The subject sample was randomly selected from a larger inpatient/outpatient population. Subjects ranged in age from 12 …

The Use Of Prereferral Interventions: The Student Assistance., Joye Louise Mcleod Dec 1990

The Use Of Prereferral Interventions: The Student Assistance., Joye Louise Mcleod

Student Work

The national special education mandate, the Education for All Handicapped Children Act, also known as Public Law 94-142, was enacted by Congress in 1975. Since that time many politicians, education agencies, and taxpayers, as well as some educators, have become alarmed at what has been perceived as the overexpansion of special education services and their skyrocketing costs. Fiscal problems in education account in part for the growing concerns about the expansion of special education. Limited state and federal resources are available for funding special education. Taxpayer revolts, particularly regarding local property taxes, limit the taxation levies available to finance education.

Holocene Climatic Change In The Central United States Inferred From Paleoecological Data., Raymond P. Latimer Dec 1990

Holocene Climatic Change In The Central United States Inferred From Paleoecological Data., Raymond P. Latimer

Student Work

The Holocene in the central U.S. is the period of time since the retreat of the last continental ice sheets. It has been a 10,000 year period of climate variability. In North America, Holocene climatic fluctuations have been detected in the paleoenvironmental record of the central United States. The most evident climactic fluctuation has been the mid-Holocene Climatic Optimum, or Altithermal. The Altithermal provided the warmest and driest post-glacial climatic conditions which lasted from ca. 8500-4000 years B.P.
