The American Indian As Metaphor: William Carlos Williams And Hart Crane, Douglas Manning Tedards May 1976

The American Indian As Metaphor: William Carlos Williams And Hart Crane, Douglas Manning Tedards

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The American Indian has functioned metaphorically in American literature at least since his characterization as an agent of Satan in the captivity narratives of the 17th century. From then until now, the Indian has tended to represent either the noble savage of the primitive heathen. Moreover, literary criticism dealing with these images has shown a primary interest in the historical accuracy and fairness of portrayal of the Indian and his way of life. That is to say, relatively little critical attention has dealt with the Indian as metaphor, examining how the Indian functions figuratively in the literature. Two excellent studies …

The Training Of Human Voluntary Torsion: Tonic And Dynamic Cycloversion., Richard Balliet Jan 1976

The Training Of Human Voluntary Torsion: Tonic And Dynamic Cycloversion., Richard Balliet

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Voluntary cyclotorsions were found not to have significant visually induced components in control studies where subjects were required to relax and observe the rotating visual stimuli used in the aforementioned pursuit and tracking tests.

All voluntary cyclotorsions reported here were shown to be pure cycloversions occurring around the visual axes, even though only monocular visual stimuli (when occurring at all) were used.

These results suggest that existing slow pursuit and saccadic systems control trained voluntary cycloversions. I propose that in making voluntary cycloversions, the visuomotor system utilizes the primitive slow phase and fast flicks from the phylogenetically old vestibulo-oculomotor reflex …

He said that it was all right to write a little friction, though, she added with a grin and drew a notebook from under her pillow. She kept it there she told me and was trying to finish a story which she hoped …

Consecuencias De La Dictadura En Las Novelas El Señor Presidente Y Muertes De Perro, Gerardo Vallejo

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
