Unsteady State Heat Transfer In A Composite Medium Exposed To Radiant Heat Energy, Ripujit Mackar Oct 1970

Unsteady State Heat Transfer In A Composite Medium Exposed To Radiant Heat Energy, Ripujit Mackar

Theses

Transient one dimensional heat transfer in a composite medium of two materials exposed to radiant heat flux has been investigated. The end faces of the composite were considered to be losing heat energy by natural convection and radiation. The principle variables studied were the temperature at steady state and the time required to attain the steady state with and without the contribution of loss by radiation. It was observed that neglecting the loss of energy by radiation from the face receiving the radiant heat flux introduced an error in the absolute steady state temperature of that face as high as …

The Manifest Anxiety-Defensiveness Scale, Induction Of Threat To Self-Esteem, And The Resolution Of Dissonance, Dennis F. Gardner Aug 1970

The Manifest Anxiety-Defensiveness Scale, Induction Of Threat To Self-Esteem, And The Resolution Of Dissonance, Dennis F. Gardner

Student Work

It has been suggested that self-esteem is a significant contributing variable in determining defensive behavior (Asch, 1948; Janis & Field, 1959; Lazarus & Longo, 1953; Rosenzweig, 1938; Sears, 1940). Several studies suggest that individuals of high and low self-ssteem (SE) manifest different patterns of response to the experience of success and failure (Altrochi, Parsons, & Dickoff, 1960; Stotland & Hillmer, 1962; Stotland, Thorley, Thomas, Cohen, & Zander, 1957). Further, Slock and Thomas (1955) and Altrochi, Parsons, and Dickoff (1960) have shown that persons with high SE tend to avoid threatening materials, while persons with low SE tend to approach and …

Determination And Application Of Winstein-Grunwald M And Y Values In Bridged Polycyclic Systems, Rosemary Leyden Aug 1970

Determination And Application Of Winstein-Grunwald M And Y Values In Bridged Polycyclic Systems, Rosemary Leyden

Theses

The rates of solvolysis of 3-nortricyclyl p-bromobenzenesulfonate (nortricyclyl brosylate) have been determined (at 25.0) in the solvents acetic acid, methanol, and acetic acid and methanol with various small amounts of added water. First order rate constants were obtained by u.v. absorbance, conductometric and titrimetric techniques. All rate constants obtained, with the exception of the titrimetric data, were fairly reproducible and agreed with the previously reported data (where available). Numerical values of m from the Winstein equation: log k/k = mY were calculated from experimental data for solvolysis reactions of nortricyclyl brosylate in each of the solvent sets. These m values …

Effects Of Proportion Of Positive Instances And Degree Of Restriction On The Induction Of A Principle, Dennis C. Dervin Jun 1970

Effects Of Proportion Of Positive Instances And Degree Of Restriction On The Induction Of A Principle, Dennis C. Dervin

Student Work

An experiment is reported in which student subjects attempted to discover a principle by pairing number and letters. Seven groups of subjects varied on two dimensions, proportion of positive instances sampled and degree of restriction in choosing number-letter pairs. It was found that subjects who sampled a higher proportion of positive instances were more successful that those sampling a lower proportion. Furthermore, subjects who were unrestricted in their choice of number-letter pairs, because they sampled a higher proportion of positive instances, performed more efficiently than subjects who were restricted and sampled a lower proportion of positive instances. Finally, when both …

Concurrence With Persuasive Suggestion As A Function Of The Sex Of The Speaker, Sex Of The Listeners And The Form Of Persuasive Suggestion Used, John A.G. Klose Jun 1970

Concurrence With Persuasive Suggestion As A Function Of The Sex Of The Speaker, Sex Of The Listeners And The Form Of Persuasive Suggestion Used, John A.G. Klose

Student Work

Twelve groups of Ss participated in twelve different conditions to assess the relationship of concurrence to the sex of the speaker, sex of the listener and form of suggesttion used by a speaker. None of these independent variables was significantly related to the number of concurrent and nonconcurrent responses of Ss. However, nonconcurrent responses increased significantly for all groups of Ss with each suggestion in a series of four suggestions. This finding lends support to the theory of psychological reactance (Brehm, 1966).

A Study Of Solarization In The Negative Image Of Reversal Films And Sensitivity And Development Rate As A Function Of First Exposure, Maximiliano Rivera Jun 1970

A Study Of Solarization In The Negative Image Of Reversal Films And Sensitivity And Development Rate As A Function Of First Exposure, Maximiliano Rivera

Theses

This thesis has two objectives. One is to see if in reversal films solarization has begun before reaching the maximum density in the negative image. Acetone semicarbazone was added to the emulsions, so that if solarization were significant, this halogen acceptor, by elimination of the solarization, would increase the maximum density. The films tested were KODAK PLUS-X Reversal Film Type 7276, TRI-X Reversal Film Type 7278, Fine Grain Release Positive Type 5302, and PANATOMIC-X. It is concluded that solarization does not have a significant effect on the maximum density, slope near the maximum density, or density scale of the negative …

The Modulation Of Sine-Wave Gratings At Fourier And Fresnel Imaging Points, Donald Kingsley May 1970

The Modulation Of Sine-Wave Gratings At Fourier And Fresnel Imaging Points, Donald Kingsley

Theses

When illuminated by a coherent light beam, a periodic object will be imaged in near-field space at predictable intervals. This phenomenon is termed self imaging. Recordings of the intensity distribution of sine-wave gratings were made at several positions behind the gratings. The modulation of the images was calculated and used as a predictor of distance from the grating. Positional accuracies of one part in one-hundred fifty-eight were obtained.

A Study Of The Effects Of The Addition Of Halogen On The Redox Potentials Of Several Sensitizing Dyes, Stephen Noland May 1970

A Study Of The Effects Of The Addition Of Halogen On The Redox Potentials Of Several Sensitizing Dyes, Stephen Noland

Theses

Basic data are lacking in the literature concerning the reactivities of desensitizing dyes to Iodine, and concerning their redox potentials while undergoing such reactions. Such information may be useful in deciding on the mechanism of desensitization, since there is good evidence that the halogen liberated from an Iodobromide emulsion during photolysis is actually Iodine. Therefore, experiments were undertaken to measure the polarographic anodic potential of the first addition product of a series of thiacyanine dyes, if such a species existed. Also, preliminary experiments were undertaken to determine the relative reactivities of the dyes to molecular Iodine and Bromine while they …

The Effectiveness Of Information Feedback On The Conformity Behavior Of Children, John Jay Wicks Feb 1970

The Effectiveness Of Information Feedback On The Conformity Behavior Of Children, John Jay Wicks

Student Work

This paper summarizes a developmental study concerning the effects of correctness feedback on the conformity behavior of children. Specifically, the study proposes to test the following assumption: (1) that conformity is a positive function of age on ambiguous stimulus tasks and (2) that the effectiveness of correctness feedback is greater for older than younger Ss. To test these assumptions, the Ss were divided, at each grade level, into three groups: (1) a reward conformity group where the Ss received a "correct” signal for agreeing with the group and a "wrong" signal for disagreeing, (2) a reward nonconformity group where Ss …

An Experimental Examination Of Racial Distance Attitude Change In Young Delinquent Girls, Jane Anne Beem Jan 1970

An Experimental Examination Of Racial Distance Attitude Change In Young Delinquent Girls, Jane Anne Beem

Student Work

This research project was designed and expedited as the result of several long standing interests and concerns. These interests, theoretical in nature, focus upon: (a) the individual consequences of positive and/or negative interracial attitudes, and (b) the social consequences of existing interracial Interaction patterns manifested throughout the United States, particularly within the past two decades. The concerns, pragmatic in nature, are with "social reform."

A Study Of Consumer Acceptance Of A No-Loss Credit Card Verification System, Dean Arlidge Jan 1970

A Study Of Consumer Acceptance Of A No-Loss Credit Card Verification System, Dean Arlidge

Theses

This research study focuses upon Credit Cards and a proposed verification method to reduce the risk of fraudulent use. It is anticipated that the proliferation and growing use of credit cards will require the use of security concepts offering built-in point of use protection that is automatic and reliable. A suggested concept is the use of a combined electronic credit card and a memory device. The proposed verification technique combines a user electronic credit card and memory number along with a simple imprinter which would be operated by the person accepting the credit card. Credit cards have become a widely …
