Phenanthroindolizidines And Related Compounds, Brian Chauncy Jan 1970

Phenanthroindolizidines And Related Compounds, Brian Chauncy

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

A new synthesis of the racemic forms of four methoxy substituted phenanthroindolizidines has been accomplished. The structures of two of the synthetic products, the tetramethoxy substituted bases (i)- tylocrebrine (xxxild) and (1)- tylophorine (xxxilc), were confirmed by direct comparison with the naturally occurring alkaloids whilst the spectroscopic data and physical constants of the trimethoxy base (xxxilb) were in agreement with those published for (-)-antofine and (-)-antofine. The fourth synthetic base, the dimethoxy substituted phenanthroindolizidine (XXXlla), was new and its proposed structure was confirmed by standard analytical and spectroscopic methods.

The Isothermal Transformation Of Austenite At Temperatures Near Ms., Robert H. Edwards Jan 1970

The Isothermal Transformation Of Austenite At Temperatures Near Ms., Robert H. Edwards

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The investigation described in this thesis is concerned with the identification of the products of isothermal transformation of austenite containing 1.44% C, at temperatures just above and just below the Ms temperature, and determination of the isothermal transformation diagram for this range of temperatures. In part A of the thesis, the literature relevant to the martensite and lowerbainite transformations is reviewed, with particular emphasis being placed on those features of each transformation which may possibly be used to identify the product. It is concluded that habit plane measurements offer the most suitable experimental means for identification of the products. In …

An Experimental Investigation Of Fission, J. W. Boldeman Jan 1970

An Experimental Investigation Of Fission, J. W. Boldeman

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Accurate measurements have been made of the average number of prompt neutrons, emitted per fission for thermal neutron fission of U233, U235, Pu239 and Pu241 and spontaneous fission of Pu240 and Pu242. The large liquid scintillator method has been used and sources of error in this method have been closely examined. In addition, precise measurements have been made of the probability distribution of neutron emission for each of the six cases above and the spontaneous fission of Cf252. The data have been compared with the neutron emission distribution calculated from fragment kinetic energy data.

Phenanthropiperidines And Related Compounds, Brian Robert Worth Jan 1970

Phenanthropiperidines And Related Compounds, Brian Robert Worth

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Syntheses of variously substituted diphenylpiperidine derivatives were accomplished and their reactions, as intermediates in a new synthetic route to the physiologically active phenanthroindolizidine alkaloids and their analogues, were investigated. The s5nithesis involves Michael addition of phenylacetonitrile donors to ethyl cinnamate acceptors, yielding a series of ethyl-3,4-diphenyl-4-cyanobutanoates bearing aromatic methoxy, methylenedioxy and iodo substituents. Reductive cyclisation of these cyanoesters with Raney-nickel or copper chromite catalysts gave, imder exactly controlled conditions, either secondary or tertiary diphenylpiperidine derivatives or the corresponding dC - lactams. The ratio of the cis- and trans- racemates formed in each reaction was found to vary with changes in …

Investigation Of Design Methods For Bulk Transport Containers, J. T. Devine Jan 1970

Investigation Of Design Methods For Bulk Transport Containers, J. T. Devine

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The purpose of this investigation was to examine design methods which may be used to study stresses which occur in transportation vehicles. The major area of uncertainty in this field occurs in relation to dynamic aspects and it was determined to apply the use of the moire fringe technique in conjunction with models to study impact and vibration effects in structura^l members. The basic geometry of the moire pattern is noted. The methods and principles employed by previous workers to study statically loaded structures are investigated to establish the techniques required for moire analysis. These principles are then applied to …

Investigation Of Stress Distribution Of Changes Of Section Of Members Under Two Dimensional Bending And Direct Stress, K. Forbes Jan 1970

Investigation Of Stress Distribution Of Changes Of Section Of Members Under Two Dimensional Bending And Direct Stress, K. Forbes

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The application of the complex variable to the theory of elasticity by Huschelishvili and C.A.M. Gray, in cases V7here the shape being investigated can be transformed to the imit circle, leads to an infinite set of simultaneous equations in an infinite number of unknovjns say). Results are normally only possible by successive approximation and then only if the equations are in a suitable form. This thesis attempts to find solutions for various such sets, and particularly for the change of section shape. In most cases, x^ does not approach 0 as n approaches infinity and so consideration of only a …

Studies In Flooding Phenomena In Packed Beds, John B. Drinkwater Jan 1970

Studies In Flooding Phenomena In Packed Beds, John B. Drinkwater

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Flooding velocities ^lere measured for five different packings, under both vtetting and non-vietting conditions ^ith and viithout the addition of a frothing agent, in a 3»75-inch glass column to permit visual observation. The air-viater system vías used and the results plotted according to the Sherwood et al type correlation. The results have revealed the importance of a number of variables affecting flooding in packed columns vihich do not appear to have been considered or included in flooding correlations in the past. These variables are:- (i) Particle surface 'i^ettability (ii) Particle shape, and (iii) Foaming properties of the liquid. It is …

The Validity Of An Operational Solution Of Laplace's Equation, R. Wilcox Jan 1970

The Validity Of An Operational Solution Of Laplace's Equation, R. Wilcox

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

A physical problem that has received considerable attention i s that of leakage in mine ventilation. Most underground methods of mining leave porous material between roadways^ with the result that through leakage^ the quantity of air reaching the working face is usually less than that entering the mine. Investigations into this problem have assumed that air flows through the barrier in a direction perpendicular to the roadways. This is clearly wrong unless flow is impervious in any other direction. In the present study^ the more general consideration of air movement in any direction is made. It is shown that the …

Multigroup Neutron Transport Theory In Plane Geometry, B. E. Clancy Jan 1970

Multigroup Neutron Transport Theory In Plane Geometry, B. E. Clancy

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The multigroup form of the transport equation describing the steady state population of neutrons in a plane geometry is studied. The existing techniques of finding numerical solutions to the transport equation in the discrete ordinate approximation are considered in relation to the deep penetration problem of reactor shielding theory. Some of the computational difficulties are examined and a major one found to be the excessive time used in iterating the equation over a large number of mesh points.

Oscillations Within And On A Fluid Enclosed Arbitrary Boundaries, D. J. Clarke Jan 1970

Oscillations Within And On A Fluid Enclosed Arbitrary Boundaries, D. J. Clarke

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

A number of problems describing oscillations of a fluid in regions defined by arbitrary boundaries is examined in this thesis. The arbitrary boundaries are subjecrt to linear theory as a first restriction. In one-dimensional flow problems the boundary is required to be such that transverse oscillations are negligible3 but with two-dimensional flow no further* restriction is required. The treatment is twofold in that it firstly attempts to incorporate general boundary shapes so that the mathematics is tractable and secondly devises faster numerical techniques for the analysis of the fluid oscillations under different conditions.

The Variation With Space And Time Of The Neutron Energy Distribution In Pulsed Beo Assemblie, A. I.M. Ritchie

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Time dependent spatial distributions have been measured in -2 -2 BeC assemblies covering the buckling range 0.0083 cm to 0.0399 cm , referred to a density of 2.96 gm cm . This buckling range covers assemblies with decay curves that can be described by a discrete decay constant ( X ^ X*)^ a pseudodiscrete decay constant C\*< X X^) and a decay constant that changes with time (X > /V ). It was found K that the extrapolated length derived from these spatial distributions \ v^ -2 did not change with time if A < A . At a buckling of 0,0292 cm , (X-^X^), the extrapolated length changed by (0. 5 ^ 0. 25)per cent./1,000 us in the time range 1.4 ms to 2.9 ms and by (2„0-0.5)per cent.71,000 ps over a similar time range Tlie decay consta nta t oft het hel arngexets t hbiughcekrl insgpa, ti0a.l0 39m9o dec m"( th,e ( A2 1>1 A K ). 2 mode) did not lie on the X(B ) curve of the fundamental.
