A Study Of The Bulk Electrical Resistivity Characteristics Of Fly Ash From Lignite And Other Western Coals, Warren Ernest Bucher Dec 1970

A Study Of The Bulk Electrical Resistivity Characteristics Of Fly Ash From Lignite And Other Western Coals, Warren Ernest Bucher

Theses and Dissertations

Fly ash produced from burning fossil fuels presents an air pollution problem when it is discharged into the atmosphere. Fly ash can be removed from gases using electrostatic precipitation. Efficiency of precipitation depends to a large extent on the bulk electrical resistivity of the fly ash which in turn depends on conditions such as ash temperature, moisture content of the gas, and ash composition. Bulk electrical resistivity is the total resistivity of a dust layer.

A bulk electrical resistivity testing apparatus was built and operated according to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Power Test Code 28 to investigate the …

Cognitive Dissonance As A Function Of Internal-External Locus Of Control, Dennis U. Spjut Dec 1970

Cognitive Dissonance As A Function Of Internal-External Locus Of Control, Dennis U. Spjut

Theses and Dissertations

According to cognitive dissonance theory engaging in behavior inconsistent with one's beliefs arouses dissonance. When individuals choose to engage in a boring and repetitious task they tend to positively reevaluate the task. Recent research (Pallak, et al. 1967) using an incidental verbal learning paradigm indicates that subjects who voluntarily commit themselves to performing a boring task reduce dissonance via enhanced task performance rather than through positive task reevaluation. Both the arousal of dissonance and its reduction can be expected to vary with individual differences. The present study investigated the individual differences of sex and internal-external locus of control as related …

Nests were established either in non-use areas or in areas of light to moderate grazing. These …

Cotton Famine Relief Ligislation: A Study In Mid-Victorian Attitudes, John A. Steidl Dec 1970

Cotton Famine Relief Ligislation: A Study In Mid-Victorian Attitudes, John A. Steidl

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to explain the cotton famine and resulting relief legislation as an example of attitudes characteristic of the mid-Victorian period. It is at times easier to understand a period of history by investigating a specific, readily defined event through the primary and secondary source material available and to interpret that period in terms of the forces involved in shaping the event. This reasoning is only valid, however, if the event is truly representative of the thought and behavior of the period. In my estimation the cotton famine was indeed representative, and it will be my …

The Effect Of The Parasite Hymenolepis Diminuta On Iodine Economy In The Rat, David Gourdon Holmes Aug 1970

The Effect Of The Parasite Hymenolepis Diminuta On Iodine Economy In The Rat, David Gourdon Holmes

Theses and Dissertations

A balance of iodine within the rats is important for the maintenance of normal thyroid function. Because of Hymenolepis d[imi]nuta's affinity for certain nutrients, it may upset norma[l] iodine balance in the rat. To determine this, tapeworm-infected and non-infected rats were given 125Iodide orally and the percent uptake of iodide by the thyroid and the amount of radioac[tiv]ity in the tapeworms was determined. The percent distribution of the radio-iodinated compounds in the thyroid, tapeworms and feces was also determined. These procedures were repeated except 125Thyroxine was administered orally. There was a decrease in percent iod[id]e uptake by thyroids of tapeworm-infected …

The Design Of A Laser Doppler Velocimeter, Marlo R. Anderson Aug 1970

The Design Of A Laser Doppler Velocimeter, Marlo R. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

A relatively new method of measuring local velocity in a fluid stream has been devised which eliminates some of the inherent problems of the traditional methods. This method senses the Doppler shift of light scattered from a laser beam incident on particles suspended in the fluid. The Doppler shift is proportional to the particles (or fluid) velocity. This new technique has several distinct advantages over the more traditional methods of velocity measurement.

The Syrian Massacres And The Cretan Rebellion: Mid-Victorian Humanitarianism And Britain's Eastern Policy, Edward D. English

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to prove the existence and strength of mid-Victorian humanitarian sentiment. The British government's policy and response to the Syrian massacres and the Cretan rebellion serve as vehicles to show the vitality and power of humanitarianism that was a part of the Evangelical revival. This study will further document the attempted reconciliation of this humanitarian sentiment and Britain's policy in the Near East.

In a general characterization of the unique mid-Victorian period of British history, humanitarianism will be isolated. A humanitarian desire to help will oe shown to be a basis for the British government's …

Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this study is the various treatments given by composers to a twelve line poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The text is the common factor over which the differences of approach and treatment are laid by composers in compositions which range in time of initial publication from 1796 to 1888. The condition of the Lied immediately prior to the publication of the first of the settings is taken as the starting point, since all of the chosen settings may be classified as Lieder. The composers whose works are discussed are Karl F. Zelter, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz …
