It was the problem of this study to identify basic characteristics, which teachers of the disadvantaged should possess in order to achieve maximum effectiveness in their teaching. Also, the study attempted to discover and reveal factual data on the disparity, which exists between the characteristics, which teachers presently working in this capacity possess, and those characteristics which are preferred.
Case Relations Of The Two Part Verb In English, Lester Gould Woody
Case Relations Of The Two Part Verb In English, Lester Gould Woody
Master's Theses
This paper attempts to explore one relatively small phenomenon of language. Linguistics is what might be thought of as a discipline in its infancy. Men have studied language for thousands of years: Dionysius Thrax of Alexandria codified the grammar of Greek in the second century B.C. But it has been only in the last thirty to forty years that scholars have studied language as it is spoken, as the living tool for symbolization that more than anything else distinguishes man from the lower animals. Linguists try to describe and to explain language, not to prescribe how it should be used. …

The Status Of Career Development In The Elementary School As Viewed By Elementary School Counselors Of Virginia, Regina N. Smith
Master's Theses
Although 1970 has been proclaimed the contennial year of the founding of the public school system in Virginia,1 organized guidance in the elementary schools had its beginning only five years ago.2 During the ensuing years, there has been increased interest in offering more and improved guidance services in the elementary schools of the state. An additional emphasis has been placed on the developmental aspect of guidance, specially trained persons have been employed in some of the elementary schools in Virginia.
One of the this developmental aspect of guidance in which there is great concern is career development. Because …

Alejo Carpentier : CivilizacióN Y Barbarie, MaríA Luisa P. ValdéS
Master's Theses

Cher Antoine : Jean Anouilh's Reflection On His Own Works, Joseph Towler Knox
Master's Theses
This examination of plays by Jean Anouilh will uphold the thesis that Anouilh's most recent play offers an over-all judgment of his own work. Furthermore, while the play itself manages to be rather successful, the conclusion to be drawn from it is that the author has failed to attain success he sought.

During the last quarter of the eighteenth century, the Reverend William Graham, a Presbyterian Minister, became noted as an educator and minister in Virginia. The Effects Of Estradiol And Growth Hormone On Liver And Plasma Protein Of The Hypophysectomized Water Snake, Terry Chong Der
Master's Theses
The effects of estradiol and ovine growth hormone (GH) on liver and plasma protein of hypophysectomized Nat rix fasciata (southern banded water snake) were investigated. Liver and plasma protein concentrations were determined colorimetrically end expressed a mg/gm wet weight tissue.
Significant increases in liver protein levels occurred 48 and 7 hours after a single injection of estradiol in hypophysectomized animals. A single injection of GH had a like effect . Estradiol had a greater effect on liver protein levels than did GH. When estradiol and GH were administered together to hypophysectomized animals there was no apparent additive effect of the …

James Branch Cabell : Laughing Existentialist, George R. Hazelton
Master's Theses
In the history of American literature, there have been numerous authors whose popularity and critical acclaim were long in coming often delayed long past their deaths. Melville, for example, comes immediately to mind. Others have enjoyed a brief notoriety and have then slipped into oblivion for years until their "rediscovery."
One of the prime vehicles for renewed interest in ignored American authors has been the critical consideration of American humorous literature that has flowered during the 1940's, 50's and the 60's, This criticism, given impetus by Walter Blair's Native American Humor (1937)has made Seba Smith, Edgar Wilson Nye, and Finley …

The Barren Soul : A Study Of Ellen Glasgow's Religious Revolt, Reva May Jenkins
The Barren Soul : A Study Of Ellen Glasgow's Religious Revolt, Reva May Jenkins
Master's Theses
He stared in amazement. "You're writing on Ellen Glasgow, on her religious beliefs! Did she have any?"
The time, the speaker, and the words changed but never the question. This paper is my answer. It is the study of five rather different aspects of a religious philosophy. All of Miss Glasgow' s writings were examined. However, since all the fictional writings could not be properly studied in a paper of this size, examples were taken mainly from seven novels selected as representative. These include the following: the first two published novels, The Descendant and Phases of an Inferior Planet; …
The Thematic Relationship Of Laurence Sterne To David Herbert Lawrence, Frederick Thornett Hardy
The Thematic Relationship Of Laurence Sterne To David Herbert Lawrence, Frederick Thornett Hardy
Master's Theses
Among the pioneer novelists of the eighteenth century, Laurence Sterne stands out as an unexplained curiosity. In many ways the most modern of the early novelists, he is regarded as the first stream-of-consciousness author, and thus the forerunner of the most significant school in today's fiction. Sterne constructed his original style from ideas derived from the seventeenth century philosopher, John Locke, in his Essay Concerning Human Understanding. A less obvious but equally defendable fact is that this philosophical work provided Sterne with a thematic as well as stylistic bridge into the twentieth century. The clearest illustration of this relationship is …

3. Did the investigator find any change in the attitudes and beliefs of the students as he progressed from one grade or age level to another one and , if so, was the change or difference significant?
4. Was there a difference in the responses of boys as compared to those of girls and , if so, was the difference significant?
Comparative Age And Growth Of Two Darters, Percina Peltata (Stauffer) And Percina Notogramma (Raney And Hubbs), In Virginia, Garnett William Link
Comparative Age And Growth Of Two Darters, Percina Peltata (Stauffer) And Percina Notogramma (Raney And Hubbs), In Virginia, Garnett William Link
Master's Theses
Two closely related species or darters, Percina peltata and Percina notogramma, occur sympatrically in Virginia. An analysis or the number of scale annuli and standard length measurements on 447 peltata and 195 notogrannna revealed four year classes in both species, with very few individuals surviving to III-year class. Both species had approximately 1:1 sex ratios after the first year, in which males were predominant. The growth of both species was approximately the same after the first year; however peltata, the larger species, apparently gains an advantage during the first year which it never loses. The sexes did not …

Proudhonism And The French Working Class, Joan Batten Wood
Proudhonism And The French Working Class, Joan Batten Wood
Master's Theses
Conquering causes and dominant trends attract the attention of many historians while unsuccessful movements are neglected or forgotten. Such is unfortunate in the extreme, for these vanquished ideas are often but submerged in the prevailing trends to emerge in the shape of subtle, formative influences on human psychology and the structuring of society. As socialist thought and movements developed in the latter half of the nineteenth century, two diverging currents were readily distinguishable. One, evolving from the teachings of Karl Marx, moved toward increasing centralization and authoritarianism and has become associated in the public mind with the emergence of the …
Colores In Cicero's Philippics I And Ii, And In Pliny's Panegyricus, Marilyn Jacke Smart
Colores In Cicero's Philippics I And Ii, And In Pliny's Panegyricus, Marilyn Jacke Smart
Master's Theses
Color, as a figure of speech, is a small part of the art of rhetoric. The various definitions and uses of color in a selection of ancient writers form the subject of this thesis. The purpose is to present examples of col'o'r'es found in· Philippics I and II of Cicero, and in the·Panegyricus of Pliny the Younger. These examples will be correlated to the demands of the situation of each speaker. Cicero's speeches represent free oratory during the period of the late Republic; Pliny's speech represents epideictic oratory during the Empire. The first chapter of this thesis will serve as …
The Effects Upon Short-Term Memory Of Acoustic Interference And The Cognitive Separation Of A Reduntant Element, Robert A. Smallwood
The Effects Upon Short-Term Memory Of Acoustic Interference And The Cognitive Separation Of A Reduntant Element, Robert A. Smallwood
Master's Theses
Sperling (1963) noted that some subjects (Ss) stated they could "hear" material being held in short-term storage, and he suggested that short_term memory (STM) for verbal materials may be in the form of an auditory loop. The first major laboratory investigations of this topic were made by Conrad (1962;1964) who examined the errors made in immediate recall, and found that substitution errors tend to involve units that sound alike (acoustically-similar), even when the original stimuli were visual. He concluded that visual letters are recorded into auditory representations, which may subsequently be confused with one author. The auditory, or at least …
Shakespeare's Treatment Of Kingship In The Lancastrian Tetralogy, June Stemen Allman
Shakespeare's Treatment Of Kingship In The Lancastrian Tetralogy, June Stemen Allman
Master's Theses
The English history play reached its highest peak of development between 1595 and 1599, for it was during these years that Shakespeare wrote the set of four plays covering the historical period from Richard II to Henry V. Each of the plays is a single entity, but in their entirety, they constitute a unified tetralogy concerning the rise of the house of Lancaster. Through the illegal seizure of the crown by Bolingbroke from Richard II to the glorious reign of Henry V, Shakespeare, as an intensely political writer, examines the facets of kingship and its inherent power and authority.
An Examination Of The Influence Of August Strindberg Upon Eugene O'Neill, Mary Emily Parsons Edwards
An Examination Of The Influence Of August Strindberg Upon Eugene O'Neill, Mary Emily Parsons Edwards
Master's Theses
Eugene O'Neill made no effort to hide the names of those writers and literary works which were important to him, and most of his biographers cite the fact that from the commencement of his playwrighting [sic] career O'Neill was influenced by the Swedish writer August Strindberg. O 'Neill himself was, in fact, one of the first to call attention to the kinship between his work and that of his "Master." In his Nobel Prize acceptance speech, he indicated that he was delighted to have an opportunity to discuss the debt American drama owed to the modern drama of Europe, and, …
Ring Lardner As Dadaist, Buford Donald Fisher
Ring Lardner As Dadaist, Buford Donald Fisher
Master's Theses
This thesis is not a history of Dada, nor does it attempt to trace any direct influences that Ring Lardner may have on current literature. What it does strive to achieve is proper understanding of one facet of Lardner's work.
During the period that the Dad ists were actively trying to establish a new order by destroying the old (and theoretically, Dada itself), Lardner was creating nonsense playlets . His critics, for the most part, could not comprehend his intentions, so this aspect of his work was relegated to obscurity.
Half a century later, Dada has become more relevant historically; …

The Role Of The Peripheral Narrator In Moby-Dick, Heart Of Darkness And The Great Gatsby, Erana Leiken
The Role Of The Peripheral Narrator In Moby-Dick, Heart Of Darkness And The Great Gatsby, Erana Leiken
Master's Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the unique role of the peripheral narrator in Moby-Dick, Heart of Darkness and The Great Gatsby. Each narrator's point of view is unique in that, though he is a character within the story, his participation in the action is restricted by his peripheral status which allows him to witness and evaluate the other characters, particularly the protagonlst. The distinguishing characteristic of this narrative frame necessitated by the use of such a narrator is that the author surrenders his omniscience regarding his other characters by letting his narrator tell the reader only what …
A Resolution Of The Political Activities Of Philo With The Politico-Messianic Ideas Expressed In His Works, Leonard Jay Greenspoon
A Resolution Of The Political Activities Of Philo With The Politico-Messianic Ideas Expressed In His Works, Leonard Jay Greenspoon
Master's Theses
The study of ancient literature and society is a dynamic one. As each age brings its unique experience and understanding to this study, new explanations, interpretations end insights are developed. However, each age also tends to impose its own likes and dislikes on works and events of a prior time, with the result that the same personality, event, or piece of literature may be praised in one age and damned in the next, interpreted in one way in a particular century- and in quite the opposite way in succeeding ones, adopted as its own by one society and shunned.
