A Comparative Analysis Of The Education Attainments In Business Education In Selected Predominantly Black And Predominantly White Schools In Harris County, Frankie L. Simmons

All Theses

Many studies have been made on the quality of educational attainments in predominantly black schools as compared to that of predominantly white schools. Of these, some of the most notable include the Colemen report and civil rights commission study. The Coleman report, according to Charles H. Thompson, is considered the most ambitious and comprehensive of these studies. The report was a response to a congressional mandate in the 1964 civil rights legislation, section 402. This mandate required that a survey be made to ascertain the extent of inequality of educational opportunities and attainment " for individuals by reason of race, …

A Development Of The Parabola And Some Of Its Properties By The Synthetic Methods Of High School Geometry, Bessie Lois Dooley Aug 1970

A Development Of The Parabola And Some Of Its Properties By The Synthetic Methods Of High School Geometry, Bessie Lois Dooley

All Theses

This paper is an attempt to give a development of the parabola and some of its properties by the methods of synthetic geometry. The writer also wishes to show the power and beauty of synthetic geometry in proving theorems pertaining to the parabola.

The basic problem is to formulate and prove at least fifteen theorems using only synthetic geometry. The usual approach to properties of conics such as the parabola is by means of analytic geometry. Yet, in a traditional course in high school geometry, most of the theorems on lines and line segments, angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, and circles are …

Brief Treatise On Some Comparable Properties Of Sets And Number, Donnie Faye Armstrong Aug 1970

Brief Treatise On Some Comparable Properties Of Sets And Number, Donnie Faye Armstrong

All Theses

Many of the ideas of mathematics have come about because of certain properties of the real numbers. Some of these are convergence, metric spaces, abstract measure theory, and topology.

Because of the beauty and interest of the real number system, it is the most used "concrete" example to express the abstract ideas in a mathematical system. Set theory is another important tool in modern mathematics. Most of our important concepts in modern mathematics are based on set theory. In this paper, we examine some properties shared by both the real numbers and subsets of a given set.

The theorems presented …

An Alternative Approach To High School Geometry, James L. Williams Aug 1970

An Alternative Approach To High School Geometry, James L. Williams

All Theses

Introduction and Terminology

The fundamental ideas of analytic geometry are usually attributed to the French mathematician and philosopher Descartes (1596-1650). The key to the expression of geometric facts in algebraic form lies in the representation of a point in the plane by means of a pair of real numbers called the coordinates of the point. This paper is devoted to some detailed proofs of fundamental theorems in High School Geometry based on an alternative approach.

The analytic geometry approach seems to be a more powerful attack upon many of the problems of High School Geometry than the methods which we …

Convergence Of The Iteration Process In The Solution Of Algebraic And Transcendental Equations, James R. Anderson Aug 1970

Convergence Of The Iteration Process In The Solution Of Algebraic And Transcendental Equations, James R. Anderson

All Theses

The science of algebra arose in an effort to solve equations. Since the main objects in algebra have been the discussion of equalities and the transformation of forms into simpler equivalent ones, that science may well be called the Science of Equations. The solution of an equation containing one unknown quantity consists of the determination of its value or values, these being called roots. An algebraic equation of degree n has n roots, while transcendental equations have an infinite number of roots. There has existed for years the problem of finding values, as exact as possible, or as close as …

Norms In Mathematics, Johnny E. Johnson Jr. Aug 1970

Norms In Mathematics, Johnny E. Johnson Jr.

All Theses

INTRODUCTION

Today, norms and their applications are recognized as an essential part of the background of the mathematical analysts. From the theoretical view point, this is because many proofs of the theorems have become clarified using norms. From the applied point of view, the norms are of tremendous value in the solution of problems of heat flow, potential theory, fluid mechanics, electromagnetic, and many other fields of science and engineering.

There are many kinds of notes in mathematics. However, only three will be discussed in this paper. They are (1) the absolute norm, (2) the Euclidean norm, and (3) the …

An Interesting Relation Between The Binomial And Normal Functions, George Lee Love Aug 1970

An Interesting Relation Between The Binomial And Normal Functions, George Lee Love

All Theses

Some experiments are composed of repetition of independent trials, denoted by n, each with two possible outcomes. The binomial probability distribution may describe the variation that occurs from one set of trials of such a binomial experiment to another. The formula for the binomial provides an adequate approximation providing n is small. For large n, this distribution function can be quite laborious to work with. However, when n is large, the binomial distribution can be adjusted so that it is closely approximated by the standard normal distribution. Although the formula for the standard normal distribution looks a bit unfriendly, bristling …

A Study Of Some Finite Geometries, Ruthie Caldwell Aug 1970

A Study Of Some Finite Geometries, Ruthie Caldwell

All Theses

The geometry studied in high school deals with infinite sets of points and lines. But the geometries which the writer shall consider in this paper contain only a finite number of points and lines. Such geometries are called finite geometries.

It was G. Fano who, in 1892, first considered a finite geometry. Finite geometries were not brought into prominence until 1906 when Oswald Veblen and W, H. Bussey made a study of them. Since that time the study of finite geometries has grown considerably.

In the study of finite geometry, one must remember not to read a meaning into the …

A Technique Of Presenting The Function Concept In The Secondary Schools, Claude D. Anderson Aug 1970

A Technique Of Presenting The Function Concept In The Secondary Schools, Claude D. Anderson

All Theses

There are four main branches of mathematics; namely, algebra, geometry, analysis, and topology. The third, analysis, may be defined as the study of functions. The word, "function" is used commonly in a nonmathematical sense to denote simply the ideal of one thing depending on another. It may be said, "A man's success is a function of his ability and industry," even though the relationship involved cannot be expressed in mathematical terms.

The theory of functions as the mathematician thinks of it was begun by the Frenchman, Augustin Cauchy (1789-1857). He was a civil engineer, but permitted his interest in theoretical …

Topology is used in mathematics courses, such as algebra, number theory, and analysis. Topology is even used in engineering. Mainly in network theory.

This paper is to serve as a guide and a foundation for an introductory course in point-set topology. This paper will progress in the following manner: Chapter …

The Inversion Transformation And Some Of Its Applications, Alexander Simmons Aug 1970

The Inversion Transformation And Some Of Its Applications, Alexander Simmons

All Theses

It is the purpose of this paper to show that the inversion transformation is a useful transformation for simplifying plane figures. The paper is an outgrowth of proving Ptolemy's Theorem (In a cyclic convex quadrilateral the product of the diagonals is equal to the sum of the product of the two pairs of opposite sides). This theorem can be used to prove a fundamental trigonometric identity; namely, sin( A - B ) = sin A cos B - cos A sin B, which will be proved later in the paper.

The writer found an interesting and concise proof of Ptolemy's …

Some Uses Of 2x2 Matrices In High School Mathematics, Juanita V. O' Neal Jul 1970

Some Uses Of 2x2 Matrices In High School Mathematics, Juanita V. O' Neal

All Theses

The roots of most mathematical ideas can be traced back several centuries and this is also true of matrices.

James Joseph Sylvester, an English mathematician, is given credit for being the first to write down an oblong arrangement of numbers and called his rectangular array of numbers a matrix. This was in 1850 and before long mathematicians recognized that rectangular arrays were a convenient device for extending the common notions of numbers.

It was the English mathematician Arthur Cayley, in 1858, who used matrix notation for expressing systems of linear equations.

Cayley's matrices were quite radical in that this was …
