René Lalique: A Biographical And Stylistic Analysis Of Two Areas Of Influence - Classical And Japanese Art, Judith Gayle Booth Dec 1970

René Lalique: A Biographical And Stylistic Analysis Of Two Areas Of Influence - Classical And Japanese Art, Judith Gayle Booth

Art & Art History ETDs

One of the outstanding artists of the Art Nouveau period was the French jeweler René Lalique. Despite the designation of Lalique as "les plus ropresentatif de l 'Art Nouve.1u" very little research has been done on him or the sources of his unusual jewelry. The dual purpose of this study is to establish a biography of Lalique and present a stylistic analysis of two of his sources: Classical and Japanese art. It is hoped that an analysis of the career and sources of this major figure will aid in producing a deeper understanding of the French Art Nouveau movement.

Geology, Geochemistry And Lava Tubes In Quaternary Basalts, Northeastern Part Of Zuni Lava Field, Valencia County, New Mexico, James Douglas Causey Nov 1970

Geology, Geochemistry And Lava Tubes In Quaternary Basalts, Northeastern Part Of Zuni Lava Field, Valencia County, New Mexico, James Douglas Causey

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Basaltic volcanism in the northeastern part of the Zuni lava field is related to a north-northeast trending regional fracture system. This is shown by elongation of centers and their alignment. However, .the fractures do not control the direction of lava tubes.

There are three distinct stages of volcanic activity common to the Zuni lava field:

1) early pyroclastic eruptions,

2) quiescent flows or fissure eruptions􀀅

3) late pyroclastic eruptions.

Evidence for the first stage is sometimes lacking, but the second and third stages can always be seen.

The basalts range from weakly tholeiitic to alkali in nature. Potassium content varies …

I. Existence Of Eigenvalues For Integral Equations; Ii. A Collocation Method For Boundary Value Problems, Robert Dodd Russell Oct 1970

I. Existence Of Eigenvalues For Integral Equations; Ii. A Collocation Method For Boundary Value Problems, Robert Dodd Russell

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

I. The existence of eigenvalues is shown for certain classes of integral equations with continuous kernels. A number of interesting and useful results are thereby treated in a unified and relatively elementary way. The simplicity of these new proofs make the results accessible to introductory courses on the theory of integral equations.

II. Collocation with piecewise polynomial functions is developed as a method for solving two-point bour:rlary value problems. Convergence is shown for a general class of linear problems and a rather broad class of nonlinear problems. Some computational examples are presented to illustrate the wide applicability and efficiency of …

The Rise And Fall Of Army Preeminence In Cuba, 1868-1958, Louis A. Pérez Oct 1970

The Rise And Fall Of Army Preeminence In Cuba, 1868-1958, Louis A. Pérez

History ETDs

This is a study of the emergence of military hegemony in twentieth century Cuba, The contours of the Republic's history offers a sharply defined periodization within which to study army ascendancy. More specifically, the island entered nationhood without an army; within little more than three decades, the military institution exercised unchallenged national authority. Thirty years later the armed forces collapsed.

The Cuban army emerged initially as a military response to the problem of political instability. In the course of two armed interventions (1898-1902 and 1906-1909), United States military and political administrators saw in the Cuban armed forces an effective agency …

Variations In The Electrophoretic Mobility Of Purified Staphylocoagulase, John Elliott Hill

Biology ETDs

ABSTRACT

Coagulase production was investigated for 23 strains of Staphylococcus aureus. The coagulase from seven of these strains was purified and subjected to electrophoresis.

The dialyzable fraction of heart infusion broth was the growth medium. Coagulase was harvested from 5 hr shake cultures incubated at 37 c.

A series of dialysis steps lasting 24 hr at a temperature of 2 C were used to purify the different coagulases. The crude coagulase was first separated from the growth medium by dialysis against deionized water. The coagulase was next precipitated by dialysis against a £H 3.8 acetate buffer which had an ionic …

Comparative Molt In Toxostoma Curvirostre And T. Bendirei, John L. Darling Sep 1970

Comparative Molt In Toxostoma Curvirostre And T. Bendirei, John L. Darling

Biology ETDs

Timing and pattern of molts were studied in two species of Southwestern thrashers, Toxostoma curvirostre and T. bendirei. Emphasis was placed upon description of the sequence of feather replacement. Adults of both species undergo a complete molt (the prebasic) following the breeding season. The pattern of molt is essentially the same in both species. However, the migratory T. bendirei completes the molt approximately one month earlier than T. curvirostre, which remains on or near the breeding grounds throughout the year. The molts of young birds of both species are also similar in pattern. A major difference is the telescoping of …

Liquid Scintillators. The Photooxidation Of 2,5-Diphenyloxazole, Margaret E. Ackerman Sep 1970

Liquid Scintillators. The Photooxidation Of 2,5-Diphenyloxazole, Margaret E. Ackerman

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Mackay had found that prolonged ultraviolet irradiation of solutions of 2,5-diphenyloxazole (PPO) (1) in toluene resulted in the formation of an insoluble crystalline product 2 which accumulated above the meniscus; the formation of 2 was dependent upon the presence of dissolved oxygen and water in the solutions. The Compound 2 was not a simple degradation product of PPO (1); elemental analysis was compatible with the empirical formula C22H17O5N and the thermal decomposition of 2 gave equal molar amounts of carbon monoxide, benzoic acid, and dibenzamide. The study described in this dissertation was initiated to establish the structure of 2 and …

Three Dimensional Elastic Wave Propagation In Bodies Of Revolution, Robert S. Pritchard Aug 1970

Three Dimensional Elastic Wave Propagation In Bodies Of Revolution, Robert S. Pritchard

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

This dissertation describes solution of a class of problems of three dimensional (non-symmetrical) elastic wave propagation in bodies of revolution. The method of analysis is expansion into circumferential modes followed by solution of an approximate numerical scheme using a digital computer. The material constituting the body has been assumed homogeneous, isotropic, linearly elastic and only one material may appear in the body. A load may be applied either by a pressure blast or by a target body acting over some portion of the boundary. The loading functions may vary around the circumference. Three dimensional wave motion is analyzed by expanding …

The Study Of Nez Perce Indian Education, Gregory R. Sanford Aug 1970

The Study Of Nez Perce Indian Education, Gregory R. Sanford

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

Studies of "rock writings," both pictograph and petroglyph, indicate that the primitive artist was following a pattern of pictography in the vogue of his area. The drawings were symbolic of religious and ceremonial rites, i.e., puberty. Rich findings have been located along the Snake River depicting the history of the Nez Perce Indian. Education of children was in the form of myths and legends told in large group gatherings in the longhouse during the winter months. Expressions of politeness, etiquette, and proper behavior were usually emphasized. Horror stories indicated treatment by "spirits," if caught. Monsters were obstacles to be conquered. …

The End Of The Porfiriato: The Collapse Of The Diaz Government, 1910-1911, Louis James Secrest Aug 1970

The End Of The Porfiriato: The Collapse Of The Diaz Government, 1910-1911, Louis James Secrest

History ETDs

In the sixty years which have elapsed since the outbreak of the Mexican Revolution, the causes for that great upheaval have been blurred by both time and misleading interpretations. The lists of grievances against the Diaz government are not fully applicable as either reasons for the revolution or causes for its ultimate success. Equally misunderstood is the position of the two chief characters in this drama. The old dictator has been overvillified by generations seeking to justify both his rejection and the terrible price which the nation ultimately paid for the revolution. Similarly, Francisco Madero has been exalted to a …

Recent Developments In Representational Painting, William Arthur Richards Aug 1970

Recent Developments In Representational Painting, William Arthur Richards

Art & Art History ETDs

Continuing since its eminence in the High Renaissance during the Fifteenth Century in Europe, representation had been the predominant mode of painting until the early decades of the Twentieth Century. This form also has firm foundations in America's artistic heritage. The progress and momentum of realistic painting, however, was to a large extent eclipsed during the late 1940's and 1950's by non-objective painting, particularly Abstract Expressionism. Unexpectedly the recent decade has seen numerous artists who have shown a renewed interest in representation as a basis for painting.

This study surveys the productions of these painters, probinR into their artistic ambitions, …

Distribution Of Two Lizards, Cnemidophorus Tigris And C. Scalaris, In Pine Canyon, Big Bend National Park, Texas, Ronald V. Lucchino Aug 1970

Distribution Of Two Lizards, Cnemidophorus Tigris And C. Scalaris, In Pine Canyon, Big Bend National Park, Texas, Ronald V. Lucchino

Biology ETDs

At the lower elevations, 3500 ft or less, in Pine Canyon, Cnemidophorus tigris and c. scalaris occupy the same general areas. Corresponding with a rise in elevation, the increase in vegetation density forces both lizards from the flat terrain into the arroyos that drain the canyon. Of the two species, only C. scalaris is found above an elevation of 4000 ft. At this elevation the coarseness of soil texture in the arroyos becomes evident and the sides of the arroyos are steeper. These changes are the result of the increase in the slope of the canyon.

Air and soil temperatures …

The antigenic relationships of Ambrosia artemisaefolia, Ambrosia elatior, Ambrosia psilostachya, and Ambrosia trifida were studied using the techniques of gel diffusion and passive cutaneous anaphylaxis. Ten gram samples of defatted pollen were extracted for 7 2 hours with Coca's solution.

Each pollen extract was standardized on the basis of total nitrogen content per ml of extract using the Kjeldahl method. Antisera were prepared by injections of the pollen extract in Freund' s complete adjuvant. Rabbits were immunized subcutaneously against each pollen extract and antisera were collected five to six weeks after immunization. Gel diffusion analysis was performed by first pouring …

Transport Calculations In Particle-Loaded Media, Gary J. Scrivner Jul 1970

Transport Calculations In Particle-Loaded Media, Gary J. Scrivner

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

Particle-loaded materials are sometimes used for radiation shielding. In many cases shielding calculations, performed with the assumption of a homogeneous medium having the appropriate ratio of particle-to-matrix material, are grossly inadequate. The exact distribution of particles within such materials is probabilistic in nature, and, therefore quantities, such as the transmitted flux, become random variables. To reasonably evaluate the effectiveness of this type shielding, one must obtain the expected values and corresponding standard deviations of those quantities of interest.

In this dissertation, two models of a particle-loaded shield are investigated. The first is an artificial material postulated to consist of constant-thickness …

Player-Coach Compatibility: A Study Of The Relationship Of Interpersonal Relations Orientations To Athletic Exclusion In Junior High School Baseball Programs, Dean A. Pease

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Statement of Problem: Many students are excluded from participation in school athletic programs, and thus, from an opportunity to benefit from the educational experiences afforded. While playing ability would appear to be the most logical and common-sense criterion for the exclusion of certain students, a variety of psycho-social factors may also serve as important criteria upon which the exclusion and inclusion of athletes are based. To obtain information concerning the existence of such factors, an investigation was undertaken concerning player-coach compatibility and its role in cutting students from athletic squads.

The FIRO theory, developed by Schutz, is based on the …

L'Art De La Description Et Du Portrait Chez Manette Salomon Des FrèRes Goncourt., Barbara Joan Goodman Jul 1970

L'Art De La Description Et Du Portrait Chez Manette Salomon Des FrèRes Goncourt., Barbara Joan Goodman

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

The death of Honoré de Balzac in 1850 left a void in the production of masterpieces of the French novel. During the next decade, the lack of a dominant literary school, with precise rules, afforded to a great variety of authors a period of experimentation toward the establishment of a new direction for the novel.

The cooperative creation of Jules and Edmond de Goncourt emerged from this indecisive period. Throughout the ten years, the two brothers dabbled in various media of expression--painting, history, art criticism, drama-but their primary importance resides in their innovations in the novel. Manette Salomon, published in …
