18th Century Political Satire As Exemplified By Jonathan Swift Through "Gulliver's Travels", Carol Hargis Dec 1970

18th Century Political Satire As Exemplified By Jonathan Swift Through "Gulliver's Travels", Carol Hargis

Honors Theses

During the seventy-eight years of Jonathan Swift's life, from 1667 to 1745, English satire was in its heyday. The stinging bit of the pen became recognized as one of the strongest political weapons, and those who possessed the natural gift of creating this weapon were sought high and low by those who desired to sway public opinion. There are really three main reasons why this period, in particular, was an age of satire. "First, it was a time of radically changing values, when intensely held convictions were in conflict with each other, and a new world order was emerging. Second, …

The Use Of The Trombone In The Orchestra, Joe Kirby Aug 1970

The Use Of The Trombone In The Orchestra, Joe Kirby

Honors Theses

The trombone, perhaps the earliest of the instruments i contemporary orchestral use to develop and retain a fundamental regularity of form, is based in principle upon the utilization of a telescopic slide in the production of chromatic tones.

The characteristics of the construction of a trombone are basically, and broadly, the same as for the modern trumpet: A mainly cylindrical body-tube, narrow in relations to its length; a bell section expanding in a gentle curve to a wide terminal flare; and a deep mouthpiece with a well-developed throat. The essential difference between the two instruments lies in a different arrangement …

The United Nations: Its Successes, Failures, And Future, John Finley

Honors Theses

Organization for peace, avoidance of war, freedom from invasion, universal brotherhood of all nations and peoples--these have been the hopes and dreams of the peoples of the world for centuries. But not until the 20th century have these goals been both far away and yet so near. This century has witnessed the most horrible wars of mankind's history and the greatest advances in the organization for universal peace. But which has gathered the most support? Does the world have protection from another major war? Perhaps, an understanding can be obtained through the following examination of the successes, failures, and future …

Readers Theater, Sherry Gail Reynolds May 1970

Readers Theater, Sherry Gail Reynolds

Honors Theses

Readers Theater or Theater of the Mind, as it is sometimes called, has a varied nature and a dual origin. Basically, Readers Theater is a medium in which two or more oral interpreters through their oral reading cause an audience to experience literature. Definitions of Readers Theater vary somewhat, yet agree on basic principles. Johnny Akin of Denver University has called it "a form of oral interpretation in which all types of literature may be projected by means of characterized readings enhanced by theatrical effects." Keith Brooks of Ohio State University has said, "Readers Theater is a group activity in …

The Home Economist In The Business Field, Mary Moyers May 1970

The Home Economist In The Business Field, Mary Moyers

Honors Theses

Business firms have two main purposes in hiring home economists: home economics women interpret the needs and desires of homemakers to the company and they increase consumer demand for their company's product. Trained home economists hold a wide variety of positions in business, including work with foods, equipment, clothing, textiles, and home furnishings. In carrying out their work they use such media as magazines and newspapers, radio, television, advertising, home service, and public relations. Business is a relatively new but expanding field in which graduate home economists are employed.

The business field has such a variety of positions that persons …

The Causes Of Student Unrest, Sandra Lee Sawyer May 1970

The Causes Of Student Unrest, Sandra Lee Sawyer

Honors Theses

Protest is not a new invention of the 1960's. Protest has always been the normal apparatus to initiate change in human societies. College students can no longer be taken for granted. Though the great majority of them remain largely content, conservative, and apathetic, a determined minority of restless ones have forces other to examine and sometimes to change institutions, rules, and values that were once considered inviolate.

The Rhetoric Of Reader's Theatre, Tom Roberts May 1970

The Rhetoric Of Reader's Theatre, Tom Roberts

Honors Theses

Mr. Johnny Aiken of Denver University has called it "A form of oral interpretation in which all types of literature may be projected by means of characterized readings enhanced by theatrical effects." Among the myriad of definitions of theatre's estranged art known as Reader's Theatre, this one seems to sum up my philosophy of what it actually is. In this paper, I propose to take three steps in establishing what I believe is the true rhetoric of Reader's Theatre. Firstly, I want to enhance an agreeable definition which I have partially done thus far. Secondly, I want to discuss the …

A Study Of Little Rock School District 1966-1968 Elections And Their Effect On Public School Policy, Ray Earl Garner

OBU Graduate Theses

For many years, the school elections in Little Rock have followed a traditional pattern of meager voter turnout . School elections, prior to the 1967 election, were mentioned briefly in newspaper articles. The platforms were of the same general nature year after year. They included taxes, school expansion, better facilities, and higher teacher salaries. Candidates seldom, if ever, campaigned publicly and actively. Posters were usually placed throughout the city. A few days prior to the election, newspaper ads with the candidates' pictures would appear in the Arkansas Democrat and the Arkansas Gazette. The 1967 school election was significant, because that …

A History Of The Arkansas Assemblies Of God 1908-1968, Earl R. Teeter

OBU Graduate Theses

Religious freedom has played an important role in the nation and state. Because of the freedom guaranteed by the United States Constitution, a colorful array of denominations and sects have arisen. One group, the Pentecostals, have been called the ''Third force in Protestantism." Of this group the Assemblies of God are the largest, not only nationally and world-wide, but also in Arkansas. In fact, the Arkansas District of the Assemblies of God is the largest district per capital of any of the Assemblies of God Districts in the United States.

For some reason a study on the Arkansas Assemblies of …

Vincent Van Gogh: How His Life Influenced His Works, Paula Herrin

Honors Theses

Expressionism is a seeking of the artist to express elemental feelings that are inherent in a real world. The artist sees the conflicts in nature an in the human being and tries to express this on canvas. Vincent Van Gogh, the forerunner of this movement, strove to paint what he felt and to feel what he painted. the Expressionists after him have branched out into all directions, but all of them expressed their feelings through their art.

Vincent, the greatest and most revolutionary Dutch painter after Rembrandt, was born in Groot Zundert in the province of Noord Brabant on March …

Antigone: 441 B.C. To 1958 A.D., Sherry Gail Reynolds Jan 1970

Antigone: 441 B.C. To 1958 A.D., Sherry Gail Reynolds

Honors Theses

From 441 B.C. to 1958 A.D. is a long time, yet people have had basically the same problems for more years than that. In approximately 441 B.C., Sophocles wrote a story about a young girl who defied civil law in order to preserve the freedom of her convictions. In 1958 A.D., Mr. Dennis Holt restated this story in what he calls a "theatre poem." Antigone is considered to be perhaps the first important statement of "civil disobedience" in the western world.

Sophocles did not create the story. The content of the Oedipus trilogy, of which Antigone is a part, was …

Some Observations Of Modern Drama As Exemplified By Tennessee Williams In The Glass Menagerie And Suddenly Last Summer, James Edward Mcmenis

Honors Theses

The purpose of this Honors Special Studies project was to acquaint the author with a facet of literature of which he had not come into contact. This area of literature was the area of modern drama. As an example of the modern playwright's style and method, the author chose to concentrate on Tennessee Williams. Thus several Tennessee Williams works were read--and these, The Glass Menagerie and Suddenly Last Summer form the basis from which some conclusions were drawn.

A Discriminative Study Of How Hymns Should Relate To The Present Age, Shelby Earl Cowling Jan 1970

A Discriminative Study Of How Hymns Should Relate To The Present Age, Shelby Earl Cowling

Honors Theses

Today, when the church and church music no longer dictate the cultural development of music as it once did long ago, and when composers use on of the three basic elements of music as the basis for their compositions thus offering many different types of styles of music, church music finds itself in a state of confusion. It culturally lags behind that of secular music and quite often gets trapped when trying to decide on which style to adopt today. It does not attract as it once did the composers of its century to compose music for the church, it …

In my Honors Special Studies I have undertaken a scientific investigation of Unidentified Flying Objects, and the probabilities or possibilities of extraterrestrial life. As will be shown by my findings, there are, at pre- sent, only theories with no conclusive proof concerning these phenomena. For' this reason, this paper will not be simply composed of scientific findings, but it will be the specualtions and conclusions I have arrived at from making the study.

A Special Studies Paper On Mathematics In Computer Programing, Linda Gamble Jan 1970

A Special Studies Paper On Mathematics In Computer Programing, Linda Gamble

Honors Theses

The profession of programing has existed for two decades or longer. Computer programing and the organization of computer analysis have gone beyond the reach of careful clerks with high school education. There is a growing demand for persons who are competent researchers, experienced in the use of multivariate methods, and skilled as computer users and programers. Mathematics and engineering predominate. The programer should have a knowledge of mathematics and a familiarity with computer hardware and must understand the content of the problem to be solved.

A Program For Children: Creative Dramatics, Patsy Hill Jan 1970

A Program For Children: Creative Dramatics, Patsy Hill

Honors Theses

A child needs beauty and love every bit as much as he needs food and exercise. He needs quiet just as he needs laughter and shouting. He needs to be alone just as he needs to be with others. He needs to work as well as to play. All components of growth are equally important if he is to develop a wholeness of personality. For a child to live is quite a different thing than for him to exist. He needs to be guided in his growing so he reaches for his best. He needs to find his way to …

A Study Of Methods Of Teaching Piano Technique In Arkansas Member Colleges Of The National Association Of Schools Of Music, Laquinta Barnett Jan 1970

A Study Of Methods Of Teaching Piano Technique In Arkansas Member Colleges Of The National Association Of Schools Of Music, Laquinta Barnett

OBU Graduate Theses

Within the last two centuries several schools of thought have developed on the subject of piano technique. At the end of the eighteenth century piano teachers stressed finger technique with little use of the arm. During the nineteenth century pianists began to use the weight of the arm more in the production of piano tone. In the early 1900s a controversy developed between the advocates of freedom of arms and hands and the more conventional muscular approach.

The purpose of this study was to investigate current methods of teaching piano technique in N. A. S. M. college in Arkansas. Twenty …

A Study Of Factors Related To Becoming A Prophet As Set Forth In The New Testament, Clyde W. Coleman Jan 1970

A Study Of Factors Related To Becoming A Prophet As Set Forth In The New Testament, Clyde W. Coleman

OBU Graduate Theses

The New Testament reveals that the cause of Christ was served by many individuals during the first century A.D. The kind of work they did varied (Acts 6:1-4; I Corinthians 12:8-10, 28; Ephesians 4:11). Their personalities and abilities varied. They served in different localities and under different conditions. One kind of work . which many of them did that appeared to be more significant than the other kinds of work done was that of the prophet, the preacher or proclaimer. Christians who served in this capacity appeared to have been compelled or motivated to such service by a compelling influence …

A Survey Of String Programs In The Texas Public Schools, Dennis Lee Bell Jan 1970

A Survey Of String Programs In The Texas Public Schools, Dennis Lee Bell

OBU Graduate Theses

Orchestras suffered considerably during and immediately after the second World War. The rise of military bands and school bands overshadowed the efforts in developing a well-rounded music curriculum of instrumental music in the public school. However, the trend is now reversed. As a shortage of string players for the symphony orchestras become apparent, a move was initiated to provide training in the public schools for students who wished to play string instruments. With the rise of more American composers, conductors, and symphony players, interest increased in string programs and they began to grow.

The purpose of the survey was to …

A Critical Analysis Of Selected Problems Of A Small All-Negro Town In The Arkansas Delta, Lacy Kirk Solomon Jan 1970

A Critical Analysis Of Selected Problems Of A Small All-Negro Town In The Arkansas Delta, Lacy Kirk Solomon

OBU Graduate Theses

This study gives critical analysis to a few selected problems of the town of Michellville, Arkansas. This small all-Negro town was incorporated in 1963, but does not give much evidence of development since that time. This critical analysis seeks to discover some reasons for this lack of development. This study will seek to objectively point out causes of certain problems, without giving undue attention to the motives of different personalities.

By recording the events and problems it is expected that they may be seen in a clearer perspective. As the events are recorded, an attempt will be made to see …

A Bibliography For A Boys' Training School, Wanda Faye Williams Jan 1970

A Bibliography For A Boys' Training School, Wanda Faye Williams

Honors Theses

My special studies for the honors program mainly consisted of compiling a bibliography for a boys' training school. However, I did research involving the nature of training schools. Also, I spoke with Miss Shinn, who is the director of institutional libraries in Arkansas. She informed me that the training schools' libraries are to be approved under the same standards as school libraries. The services extended beyond books as half of this year's budget was spent on audio-visual equipment.

According to ALA school media standards, a small library should consist of at least 6000 volumes. My bibliography is not that extensive, …
