The object of this study is to investigate the mission motif in the life and thought of the people of Israel in three different periods in the nation's history, namely, the early monarchical period, the exilic period, and the post-exilic period. The inquiry seeks to determine whether or not Israel had a mission to the gentile nations during the Old Testament period, the nature of that mission, and the ways in which that mission was to be carried out. The eighteenth century, known as the Age of Reason in England, saw the effect of intellectual pursuits in the Church of England. Yet, prose fiction presented Anglicanism in an overtly active, working form rather than in a rational system of theologically-oriented statements about Christian teachings. The didacticism of the century's fiction was conducive to reflecting such an image. The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate this prose fiction in terms of movements within the Church.

The scope of this study must include three parts. Firstly, a careful analysis of the community surrounding Our Savior Lutheran Church must be made. Such an analysis ought to delineate the geographical information as well as the needs and the resources of the community. Secondly, an analysis of Our Savior Congregation is important, dealing mainly with the congregation’s understanding of, its willingness to, and its ability for ministry in this community.
