Comparison Of Amounts Of Verbal Response Elicited By A Speech Pathologist In The Clinic And A Mother In The Home, Joan Mathis

Dissertations and Theses

Language assessment of children is an essential task of the speech clinician and many studies have been concerned with the validity of the data gathered. Few studies, however, have investigated examiner variability as a possible source of deviation in language assessment. This study was designed to evaluate and compare the amount of verbal output which children with normal language use when examined by two different examiners when the examiners are in their most comfortable setting.

Six children, four years of age, were examined by a speech pathologist in the clinic and the mother in the home and the 12 fifteen-minute …

The Biodegradability Of Detergents And The Effects Of Biodegradable Detergents Upon Root Elongation Of Certain Plants, Nancy Lou Bishop Aug 1970

The Biodegradability Of Detergents And The Effects Of Biodegradable Detergents Upon Root Elongation Of Certain Plants, Nancy Lou Bishop

Masters Theses

The effects of three biodegradable detergents upon root elongation of Cucumis sativus and Avena sativa was determined. All three detergents inhibit root elongation; the degree of inhibition depends on the brand of detergent and the species tested. Contact of the detergents with a sandy-loam results in reversal of inhibition of root elongation; the degree of reversal varies with detergent and species. However, reversal after 48 hours contact with soil does not appear to be due to degradation by microorganisms. Effects of aeration and of pH on test solutions are discussed.

Vital Apical Cortical Marginal Ostectomy, Elbert W. Clark Aug 1970

Vital Apical Cortical Marginal Ostectomy, Elbert W. Clark

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The dentition has been suspect as an unfavorable influence in the healing potential of the jaws. Today, many surgical procedures are based on the supposition that teeth should be avoided, endodontically treated, or removed from the sphere of tissue infliction. On the other hand, and abundant blood supply and osteogenic capability have been recognized as favorable factors in repair.

An extra oral removal of an osteoid osteoma from the body of the mandible of a thirty-year-old female resulted in vital apicoectomies of her molar teeth as well as the removal of the medullary blood supply. An uneventful course of healing …

The study concerned a comparison of responses made by students and alumni from two types of nurse-education programs, to questions regarding communications with dying patients. This was for the purpose of answering two questions: Are students of nursing given adequate preparation for coping with the psychological needs of dying patients? Are there significant differences in the way nurses from baccalaureate and associate degree programs cope with these needs? In an effort to obtain answers to these questions, a ten-part situational questionnaire was developed. It was assumed that some clue to a subject's ability to cope effectively in emotionally stressful situations …

Fifteen male subjects who had myocardial infarction were interviewed in the hospital and after …

The Relationship Between The Lingual Surface Of The Maxillary Central Incisor And The Eminence Of The Mandibular Fossae, Robert A. Huffer Jun 1970

The Relationship Between The Lingual Surface Of The Maxillary Central Incisor And The Eminence Of The Mandibular Fossae, Robert A. Huffer

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Gnathologists have suggested that in order to prevent excessive wear on posterior teeth, alveolar bone loss due to traumatic occlusion, and temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disturbances, the mandibular incisors should disclude the posterior teeth by moving along the lingual surfaces of the maxillary incisors as the condyles move down the articular eminence in protrusion. It is suggested that in order for this to occur, the lingual surface of the maxillary incisors should be steeper than the eminence.

A cephalometric technique was developed to accurately determine the anatomical form of the articular eminence. A regular orthodontic tracing of the head was done …

An Electromyographic Comparison Of Muscle Action Potentials Of Listeners Presented Time-Compressed And Normal Speech Stimuli, Barbara S. Moon May 1970

An Electromyographic Comparison Of Muscle Action Potentials Of Listeners Presented Time-Compressed And Normal Speech Stimuli, Barbara S. Moon

Dissertations and Theses

Speech compression is a method of electromyographically reducing the speech signal, resulting in a decrease in the time required for presentation of a message by increasing the number of words per minute. Research in the area of speech compression has to this time been focused on determining the listener response by means of comprehension testing. While comprehension testing uncovers the individual's ability to resolve, organize, and recall a message at accelerated rates, it gives no information about the listener's psychophysical response to compression. Does the individual find listening to compression to be tension-provoking or stressful? Or can a listener accommodate …

Selective Inhibition Of Intestinal Amino Acid Transport By Three Heavy Metals, Verney Lee Sallee May 1970

Selective Inhibition Of Intestinal Amino Acid Transport By Three Heavy Metals, Verney Lee Sallee

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Intestinal absorption of neutral amino acids, an active transport process, selects certain amino acids for transfer on the basis of their chemical structure. However, within the group of transported neutral amino acids, selectivity into secondary groups is not readily apparent, and only a relative variation of transport rate for each amino acid has been noted. A popular hypothesis, consistent with previously reported experimental observations, holds that intestinal transport of neutral amino acids occurs through mediation of one transport system with one effective binding site.

Donation Of Organs For Transplantation: An Investigation Of Attitudes And Behavior, Courtney Weldon Goodmonson May 1970

Donation Of Organs For Transplantation: An Investigation Of Attitudes And Behavior, Courtney Weldon Goodmonson

Dissertations and Theses

While technological advances in immunology and surgery have permitted rapid increases in the number of homotransplantations now performed, little is known about layman’s attitudes toward donation of organs. Implicit in such progress has been the medical field's assumption that enough donor organs will be forthcoming to meet the increasing demand. In order to research this area a dual emphasis on practical and theoretical issues was employed. The purpose of the present study then, was to investigate this medical assumption by sampling the attitudes and behavior of college students toward donation of organs for transplant purposes, and at the same time, …
