Vital Apical Cortical Marginal Ostectomy, Elbert W. Clark Aug 1970

Vital Apical Cortical Marginal Ostectomy, Elbert W. Clark

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The dentition has been suspect as an unfavorable influence in the healing potential of the jaws. Today, many surgical procedures are based on the supposition that teeth should be avoided, endodontically treated, or removed from the sphere of tissue infliction. On the other hand, and abundant blood supply and osteogenic capability have been recognized as favorable factors in repair.

An extra oral removal of an osteoid osteoma from the body of the mandible of a thirty-year-old female resulted in vital apicoectomies of her molar teeth as well as the removal of the medullary blood supply. An uneventful course of healing …

A Study Of Temporomandibular Joint Movement After Mandibular Alteration, Donald L. Cram Jun 1970

A Study Of Temporomandibular Joint Movement After Mandibular Alteration, Donald L. Cram

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In this study of the temporomandibular joint, two instruments were employed to aid in understanding the effect of alteration of the mandible upon temporomandibular joint functions The two instruments employed were the S, S, White Panorex Radiograph and the Denar Pantograph tracing device. The question was considered, does alteration of the mandible result in a modification of the functional path of the mandibular condyle? Should one expect normal function to return to the temporomandibular joint of a mandibular condyle fracture patient?

A group of 12 patients were studied with the Pantograph to determine a set of standard values for the …

The Relationship Between The Lingual Surface Of The Maxillary Central Incisor And The Eminence Of The Mandibular Fossae, Robert A. Huffer Jun 1970

The Relationship Between The Lingual Surface Of The Maxillary Central Incisor And The Eminence Of The Mandibular Fossae, Robert A. Huffer

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Gnathologists have suggested that in order to prevent excessive wear on posterior teeth, alveolar bone loss due to traumatic occlusion, and temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disturbances, the mandibular incisors should disclude the posterior teeth by moving along the lingual surfaces of the maxillary incisors as the condyles move down the articular eminence in protrusion. It is suggested that in order for this to occur, the lingual surface of the maxillary incisors should be steeper than the eminence.

A cephalometric technique was developed to accurately determine the anatomical form of the articular eminence. A regular orthodontic tracing of the head was done …

An In Vivo Perfusion Apparatus For Studies On Gingival Disease In The Albino Rat : Assessment By A Perfusion Of The Enzymes Collagenase And Hyaluronidase, James A. Smith

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This thesis describes an in vivo perfusion apparatus which can continuously deliver controlled quantities of solutions to localized, contralateral intraoral areas in albino rats. Three animals were per fused on the experimental area (the mesial sulcular area of the maxillary first molar) on one side with tap water and Trypan blue. Localization of the solution delivered and minimal histological changes due to the presence of the apparatus was demonstrated on these animals. Solutions of .5%, 1%, and 2% hyaluronidase and collagenase were perfused on the experimental areas of nine animals. When both enzymes were used, hyaluronidase always preceded collagenase in …

Periodontal Pocket Reduction Following Gingival Curettage, Robert B. Tandy

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to evaluate pocket reduction following gingival curettage. The effects of temporary pressure packing, inflammation, oral hygiene, pocket depth, age and sex of the patient were evaluated.

Three hundred twenty-eight periodontal pockets were studied in forty-one adult patients selected with interdental lesions ranging from 3.0 - 7.5 mm. in depth. Pocket depth and gingival height were measured preoperatively, one month postoperatively and two months postoperatively. The mean change in pocket depth and gingival height was calculated and statistical significance was determined for all measurements.

The results show that after a two-month postoperative evaluation following gingival …

The Rationale Of Apical Resection In Retrofilling Procedures, Raleigh R. Cummings May 1970

The Rationale Of Apical Resection In Retrofilling Procedures, Raleigh R. Cummings

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Extracted human teeth were used in a study to determine the affect of an apical resection on the elimination of accessory canals and apical ramifications. The apices of 60 roots were resected 2 to 3 mm, an undercut slot preparation was fashioned and retrofillings of Cavit, zinc oxide and eugenol, and amalgam were placed. The identical procedure was carried out on another group of roots, except the apices were slightly beveled to the labial without any significant resection.

The apical portion of all the roots were immersed to the midroot level in methylene blue dye and subsequently dried. An examination …

Maximum Opening And Closing Forces Exerted By Diverse Skeletal Types, Erkut Yildirim

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

An appliance was constructed to measure the maximum opening force, whereas, a gnathodynamometer was utilized to record maximum closing force of 44 subjects. The collected data was analyzed by computer, regardless of sex, to determine both the mean and the standard deviation of the opening forces, and the average right and left side closing forces. The data was also computed for the above mentioned variables to find out the mean and the standard deviation for both sexes. The Student's t test was utilized to determine if there were any significant differences in the before mentioned variables. A linear correlation analysis …

Induced Early Closure Of The Spheno-Occipital Synchondrosis In The Guinea Pig, Arthur A. Ewert May 1970

Induced Early Closure Of The Spheno-Occipital Synchondrosis In The Guinea Pig, Arthur A. Ewert

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study was designed to explore the significance of the spheno-occipital synchondrosis in cranial base and craniofacial development.

Premature fusion of the spheno-occipital synchondrosis in the guinea pig was induced by placing a wire staple in the cranial base across the synchondrosis. One end of the staple was placed in the basi-occipital bone and the other end in the basi-sphenoid bone.

Results of this early closure showed marked changes in craniofacial morphology. The entire cranium anterior to the auditory bullae dropped down in relation to the axial skeleton. The cranial base from basion to the intersphenoidal synchondrosis was markedly shortened. …

Correlation Of The Epiphyseal Closure And Ossification Of The Ulnar Sesamoid Bone Of The Metacarpophalangeal Joint Of The Thumb, Hilbert Lentz

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this investigation was to determine if there is a correlation between the times of closure of the epiphyses of the hand and the time of ossification of the ulnar sesamoid of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb.

The time for these events was studied in twenty-three males and fourteen females for which appropriate hand radiographs were available. Radiographs were made every three months and epiphyseal closure was studied in these beginning with the one in which the sesamoid first appeared. The maximum time for study after sesamoid closure was twenty-four months.

Only one subject showed complete closure …

The Role Of The Articular Eminence In Mandibular Protrusion, Norman E. Corbett May 1970

The Role Of The Articular Eminence In Mandibular Protrusion, Norman E. Corbett

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Since movements of the TMJ may be translatory, rotary, or both, the form of the articular eminence becomes an integral part of the anatomy of the joint and is important in an understanding of TMJ function. A cephalometric technique was developed to accurately determine the anatomical form of the articular eminence. From a series of cephalograms, taken in various mandibular positions, the protrusive condylar path was determined. This path was also determined from a gnathological recording technique. The paths obtained were observed to be the same. The condylar path and articular eminence curves were mathematically expressed by computer programmed quadratic …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The "Smiles of the Year" winners and patients treated at Loma Linda University by the extraction or non-extraction approach were compared by linear and angular variables of skeletal, dental and soft tissue components. These findings were analyzed statistically to determine significant differences in the profile and detect the relationship between the integument and hard structures.

The following conclusions were drawn from this investigation to reflect the trend of treatment at Loma Linda University.

  1. After treatment the patients had less skeletal convexity, but were more convexity than established standards.
  2. The incisors of the patients treated by the extraction approach were less …

The Application Of An Index To Determine Genetic And Environhental Contributions To Dentofacial Growth In Twins And Siblings, Richard Charles Hayes

Theses and Dissertations

The method of principal components may be used to reduce a large quantity of data for an individual into a single statistic, a growth index, indicative of overall facial growth, and to make a determination of the relative contribution of each variable, as well as the genotype and the environment, to the variation between individuals, When this method is applied to four consecutive years of cephalometric and anthropometric data from each of 95 children, consisting of Caucasian and Negro monozygotic twins, like-sexed dizygotic twins, and their siblings of both sexes, it discloses that:

1. The relative contributions of the variables …

The Effectiveness Of Camphorated Paramonochlorophenol, Metacresyl Acetate, And Prednisolone In Combination As An Antimicrobial Agent, Maurice Cutler Jan 1970

The Effectiveness Of Camphorated Paramonochlorophenol, Metacresyl Acetate, And Prednisolone In Combination As An Antimicrobial Agent, Maurice Cutler

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Post-treatment discomfort following endodontic procedures can be caused by inflammation due to injudicious use of intracanal medicaments. Camphorated paramonochlorophenol, metacresyl acetate, and prednisolone in combination is advocated to reduce the inflammatory potential of the germicide and thus reduce the occurrence of post-operative pain. It is imperative that a medicament retain antimicrobial activity while reducing inflammatory potential.

This investigation was undertaken toward determining on an in vitro quantitative bactericidal versus bacteriostatic basis by use of the broth dilution test tube method whether camphorated paramonochlorophenol, metacresyl acetate, and prednisolone in combination retains antimicrobial activity comparable to selected other commonly used nonspecific germicides. …
