The Effects Of Para-Chlorophenylalanine On A Conditioned Emotional Response In Rats, Roy J. Hartmann Dec 1970

The Effects Of Para-Chlorophenylalanine On A Conditioned Emotional Response In Rats, Roy J. Hartmann

Theses & Dissertations

The initial intent of this study was to investigate p-CPA's actions on conditioned "anxiety" (CER) in rats in order to ascertain whether the derived effects were qualitatively similar to those previously reported for "conflict" behavior. Specifically, the goals of this study were to determine if p-CPA would reinstate lever-pressing behavior that had been suppressed by a series of tone-shock pairings. If a change in behavior did occur, would the reintroduction of serotonin, through the use of 5-HTP, return the behavior to pre-drug control levels.

Theses and Dissertations

A study of the nesting and brood habitat preferences of sharp-tailed grouse (Pedioecetes phasianellus jamesi Lincoln) was conducted in southwestern North Dakota during the reproductive seasons of 1969 and 1970. Radio telemetry was used to monitor the spring and summer activities of seventeen sharp-tail hens. Eight brooding hens were semi-continuously radio-tracked for movement and cover selection. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of seventeen nests and eight renests was made to determine the preferred nesting cover and the effects of intensive grazing upon it .. Nests were established either in non-use areas or in areas of light to moderate grazing. These …

Variations In The Electrophoretic Mobility Of Purified Staphylocoagulase, John Elliott Hill

Biology ETDs

ABSTRACT

Coagulase production was investigated for 23 strains of Staphylococcus aureus. The coagulase from seven of these strains was purified and subjected to electrophoresis.

The dialyzable fraction of heart infusion broth was the growth medium. Coagulase was harvested from 5 hr shake cultures incubated at 37 c.

A series of dialysis steps lasting 24 hr at a temperature of 2 C were used to purify the different coagulases. The crude coagulase was first separated from the growth medium by dialysis against deionized water. The coagulase was next precipitated by dialysis against a £H 3.8 acetate buffer which had an ionic …

Comparative Molt In Toxostoma Curvirostre And T. Bendirei, John L. Darling Sep 1970

Comparative Molt In Toxostoma Curvirostre And T. Bendirei, John L. Darling

Biology ETDs

Timing and pattern of molts were studied in two species of Southwestern thrashers, Toxostoma curvirostre and T. bendirei. Emphasis was placed upon description of the sequence of feather replacement. Adults of both species undergo a complete molt (the prebasic) following the breeding season. The pattern of molt is essentially the same in both species. However, the migratory T. bendirei completes the molt approximately one month earlier than T. curvirostre, which remains on or near the breeding grounds throughout the year. The molts of young birds of both species are also similar in pattern. A major difference is the telescoping of …

Molecular Weight Determinations Of Some Salmonella Potsdam Bacteriophage Dna's, Winston H. Richards

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Two group A phages, P9c/2 and P4/2, were studied. Their density, sedimentation velocity, and biochemical properties were compared. Their densities were determined by density gradient centrifugation in 38.3% cesium chloride. Sedimentation velocity was used to determine their molecular weights. To accomplish this, the DNA of P9c/2 and P4/2 was labeled with tritium and T2 DNA, labeled with 32P, was used as a standard. The DNA of P9c/2 and P4/2 was separately mixed with T2 DNA and centrifuged in a 0-15% sucrose gradient. The molecular weights were calculated using the formula D2/D1= (M2 …

Distribution Of Two Lizards, Cnemidophorus Tigris And C. Scalaris, In Pine Canyon, Big Bend National Park, Texas, Ronald V. Lucchino Aug 1970

Distribution Of Two Lizards, Cnemidophorus Tigris And C. Scalaris, In Pine Canyon, Big Bend National Park, Texas, Ronald V. Lucchino

Biology ETDs

At the lower elevations, 3500 ft or less, in Pine Canyon, Cnemidophorus tigris and c. scalaris occupy the same general areas. Corresponding with a rise in elevation, the increase in vegetation density forces both lizards from the flat terrain into the arroyos that drain the canyon. Of the two species, only C. scalaris is found above an elevation of 4000 ft. At this elevation the coarseness of soil texture in the arroyos becomes evident and the sides of the arroyos are steeper. These changes are the result of the increase in the slope of the canyon.

Air and soil temperatures …

Comparative Age And Growth Of Two Darters, Percina Peltata (Stauffer) And Percina Notogramma (Raney And Hubbs), In Virginia, Garnett William Link

Master's Theses

Two closely related species or darters, Percina peltata and Percina notogramma, occur sympatrically in Virginia. An analysis or the number of scale annuli and standard length measurements on 447 peltata and 195 notogrannna revealed four year classes in both species, with very few individuals surviving to III-year class. Both species had approximately 1:1 sex ratios after the first year, in which males were predominant. The growth of both species was approximately the same after the first year; however peltata, the larger species, apparently gains an advantage during the first year which it never loses. The sexes did not …

Antibody titers were checked weekly by the interfacial precipitin test. The peak antibody production occurred four to five weeks after the injection period, then after a slight drop in titer, remained stable for the next six weeks, during which time sera were collected. …

Ultrastructure Of The Chorionic Villi In The Term Baboon (Papio Sp.) Placenta, Carol Ann Baker May 1970

Ultrastructure Of The Chorionic Villi In The Term Baboon (Papio Sp.) Placenta, Carol Ann Baker

Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this paper is to describe the ultrastructure of the chorion frondosum of the baboon fetal placenta at or near term gestation. There is a void or, at best, only limited ultrastructural information in almost all fields of the biological sciences. The area of placentation is no exception. Since the ultimate goal of many scientific endeavors is the contribution to the vital field of human health, this investigator feels that much information can be gained through the utilization and study of the nonhuman primates in scientific research. The baboon (Papio sp.) has been shown to be quite similar …

The Functional Morphology And Ecology Of Chone Mollis, Dale Brian Bonar Jan 1970

The Functional Morphology And Ecology Of Chone Mollis, Dale Brian Bonar

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Chone mollis occurs in large numbers in Tomales Bay and is an ecologically important infaunal member of the bay community. As with most marine communities, very little work has been done with individual species of the community. The present study of C. mollis is a contribution towards an understanding of the community as an ecological unit.

This study investigates the structure and function of the tube; tube-building habits; burrowing and locomotion; external anatomy; feeding; and internal anatomy of the muscular, skeletal, vascular, excretory, reproductive, and alimentary systems of C. mollis.

Observations On The Effects Of Aspirin On Cells In Vitro, Roger Scott Barron Jan 1970

Observations On The Effects Of Aspirin On Cells In Vitro, Roger Scott Barron

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Numerous reports concerned with the effects of chemical agents (drugs) on animals, especially humans, have appeared in the literature over a period of centuries. Until very recently, however, the observations on which these reports were based have been rather general. The salicylates, for example, have been used and studied for many years yet investigations into their specific effects within living cells are minimal.

Of the several members of the salicylate group, the two that have gained widespread use in clinical practice are sodium salicylate and acetylsalicylic acid, commonly known as aspirin, the name of which was derived from the contraction …

A Myological And Osteological Comparison Of The Pelvic Appendage Of The Male And Female Western Meadowlark, Thomas Felix Sourisseau Jr. Jan 1970

A Myological And Osteological Comparison Of The Pelvic Appendage Of The Male And Female Western Meadowlark, Thomas Felix Sourisseau Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Sexual dimorphism has been noted to exist in many genera of birds, but it is not until recently that papers have appeared which deal with the actual extent of sexual dimorphism and its possible adaptive significance. The papers of Rand (1952), Sibley (1957), Amadon (1959), and Selander (1966) hypothesize about the possible significance of sexual dimorphism in birds, and the papers of Kilham (1965), Selander (1965), Storer (1966), Ligon(1968), Ingolfsson (1969), and Verner and Willson (1969) examine the relationship between hypotheses on the significance of sexual dimorphism and actual field conditions. None of these papers deals with differences in bone …
