The Roles Of Dispersal And Predation In Determining The Seedling Recruitment Patterns Of A Zostera Marina System, Stephen R. Manley
The Roles Of Dispersal And Predation In Determining The Seedling Recruitment Patterns Of A Zostera Marina System, Stephen R. Manley
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Seed dispersal and seed predation are two important processes in the early life history of plants. The interaction between these two processes influences the population recruitment from a parent plant. These mechanisms have been studied extensively in terrestrial plants and have resulted in various models to describe plant recruitment (e.g. Janzen-Connell, Hubbell, McCanny). However, seed dispersal and predation may also influence the population recruitment of marine angiosperms, such as Zostera marina (eelgrass). The objectives of this study were to determine: 1.) the patterns of seed dispersal as a function of distance from the seed source, 2.) the predation pressure on …

An Evaluation Of Project Iread: A Program Created To Improve Sight Word Recognition, Theresa Meade Marshall
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This program evaluation was undertaken to examine the relationship between participation in Project iRead and student gains in word recognition, fluency, and comprehension as measured by the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) Test. Linear regressions compared the 2012-13 PALS results from 5,140 first and second grade students at adopting and non-adopting schools. Similar regressions were performed at early and late adopting schools. The outcomes for Project iRead indicated statistically significant improvement in word recognition at the district level. However, the results were not practically significant as less than 1% of the variation was explained by the model. In addition, Project …
Investigating The Relationships Among Primary Teachers' Math Profile, Math Teaching Efficacy, And Math Content Pedagogical Knowledge, Theresa Marie Roettinger
Investigating The Relationships Among Primary Teachers' Math Profile, Math Teaching Efficacy, And Math Content Pedagogical Knowledge, Theresa Marie Roettinger
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Kindergarten, first and second grade teachers play an important role in the development of a student's understanding of mathematics. Consequently, in order to improve student achievement in mathematics, it is important to investigate the relationships that may exist among primary teachers' math profile, math teaching efficacy, and math pedagogy and content knowledge. Participants completed an online survey that included the Math Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument (MTEBI) and Math Knowledge for Teaching (MKT) items. Participants provided math profile data through academic demographic questions.;Two-hundred seven respondents completed the survey. Analysis of the data included descriptive statistics, chi-square test of independence, and Spearman …

Studies Of Mortality Estimation, Amy Y. Then
Studies Of Mortality Estimation, Amy Y. Then
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Instantaneous total mortality rate Z can be partitioned into two components: fishing, F, and natural mortality, M. A number of data-poor methods have been developed to estimate Z, F, and M, and these methods tend to rely on fairly restrictive assumptions as well as on data types that are easy to obtain, e.g., length or other life history information. The overarching goal of this dissertation is to contribute to the advancement of methods for estimating these important and influential stock parameters. The relevant issues and the gaps in knowledge pertaining to these data-poor methods are outlined in the Introduction chapter …

Towards Secure, Power-Efficient And Location-Aware Mobile Computing, Hao Han
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
In the post-PC era, mobile devices will replace desktops and become the main personal computer for many people. People rely on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets for everything in their daily lives. A common requirement for mobile computing is wireless communication. It allows mobile devices to fetch remote resources easily. Unfortunately, the increasing demand of the mobility brings many new wireless management challenges such as security, energy-saving and location-awareness. These challenges have already impeded the advancement of mobile systems. In this dissertation we attempt to discover the guidelines of how to mitigate these problems through three general communication …
Evaluating A School-Based Day Treatment Program For Students With Challenging Behaviors, Antoine Lewis Hickman
Evaluating A School-Based Day Treatment Program For Students With Challenging Behaviors, Antoine Lewis Hickman
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Jade County Public Schools has provided school-based therapeutic day treatment in its public schools for more than 10 years. This program was adopted by the school system to provide an intervention in the school and classroom to address the challenging behaviors of students with emotional and behavioral disorders.;Currently, three human services agencies provide school-based therapeutic day treatment services to students in Jade County Public Schools with the goals of increasing academic achievement, increasing school attendance, reducing undesirable behaviors and increasing desirable behaviors. Until now, there has not been a formal evaluation of the program to determine if improvements were needed …
Assessing The Effects Of Workplace Aggression And Normative Unethical Behaviors On Counselors' Perceptions Of Ethicality Using An Integrative Understanding Of Morality, Eleni Maria Honderich
Assessing The Effects Of Workplace Aggression And Normative Unethical Behaviors On Counselors' Perceptions Of Ethicality Using An Integrative Understanding Of Morality, Eleni Maria Honderich
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Acting ethically is a core facet of the counseling profession's identity, safeguarding clients from undue harm (ACA, 2005). Through an increased understanding of both detrimental and positive factors that can influence counselors' perceptions of ethical behaviors, the counseling profession can intervene accordingly; this knowledge may assist in managing the problem related to unethical infractions. However, ethical behavior is a multifaceted and complex phenomenon, leaving many factors to be explored and examined. Workplace aggression, exposure to normative unethical behaviors, and an integrated modal of morality constitute some of these factors that warrant further investigation. A dearth of research currently exists within …

Sediment Deposition And Reworking: A Modeling Study Using Isotopically Tagged Sediment Classes, Justin J. Birchler
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
A sediment transport model within the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) was used to examine how repeated cycles of deposition, erosion, and bioturbation influence flood and storm event bed character offshore of a significant fluvial source. Short-lived radioisotopes Beryllium-7 (7Be) and Thorium-234 (234Th) can be used as tracers of deposition and reworking on the continental shelf, and modeled profiles of these radioisotopes, along with simulated profiles of sediment bed grain size distributions, were analyzed for various model runs. The presence of an atmospherically derived radionuclide,7Be, in seafloor sedimentindicates terrestrial (riverine derived) sediment deposition offshore of a fluvial source. In contrast,234Th naturally occurs …
