A Narratological Reading Emphasizing The Narrator/Narratee Relationships In Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein", Charles Robert Maturin's "Melmoth The Wanderer", And J. Sheridan Le Fanu's "Carmilla"., Marion Carol Zwickel Jan 1995

A Narratological Reading Emphasizing The Narrator/Narratee Relationships In Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein", Charles Robert Maturin's "Melmoth The Wanderer", And J. Sheridan Le Fanu's "Carmilla"., Marion Carol Zwickel

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The focus of this study is a narratological reading emphasizing the narrator/narratee relationships in three highly mediated, nineteenth century, English Gothic novels: Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1817); Charles Robert Maturin's Melmoth the Wanderer (1820); and, J. Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla (1872). A narratological reading depicts how the form of these novels illuminates their content to demonstrate that these Gothic stories do have redeeming literary merits and are not just popular fiction. The introduction discusses Gerald Prince's theory of narrator/narratee relationships which he explicates in his article "The Introduction to the Study of the Narratee" (Poetique 1973). Next, the introduction explains the …

The Status Of English Grammar Instruction In Master's Programs In Tesol In The United States., Joanne Zoller Wagner Jan 1995

The Status Of English Grammar Instruction In Master's Programs In Tesol In The United States., Joanne Zoller Wagner

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Although the TESOL Guidelines for the Certification and Preparation of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages in the U.S. recommend that teacher preparation programs in TESOL offer courses in the grammatical system of English, there existed no descriptive study of nationwide curricular practice regarding English grammar instruction in master's programs in TESOL. All master's programs in TESOL listed in the Directory of Professional Preparation Programs in TESOL, 1992-1994 were surveyed in Fall 1993 regarding course offerings, requirements, placement mechanisms, course content and length, instructors, the role of grammar in the program, approval of the TESOL Guidelines, and curricular …

Applicability Of Bispectral Analysis To Unstable Plasma Waves, Renaud Stauber Jan 1995

Applicability Of Bispectral Analysis To Unstable Plasma Waves, Renaud Stauber

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

A program to implement a spectral analysis technique called the bispectrum was written and tested with computer generated time series data. The application of the algorithm to the study of nonlinear interactions was demonstrated by a comparison of computed quantities with results from model equations found in the literature. Specifically determined were: the amplitude and phase of coupling coefficients, the power transfer function, the fraction of power associated with nonlinear coupling, and the identification of waves involved in a quadratic coupling interaction. A method of distinguishing the two parent waves from the daughter wave in this three-wave interaction is proposed …

The Efficacy Of Adolescent Rape Prevention Education, Ruth E. Kershner Jan 1995

The Efficacy Of Adolescent Rape Prevention Education, Ruth E. Kershner

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

During the past several years, an increased number of rapes have been reported in the adolescent population (Ageton, 1983; Erickson & Rapkin, 1991; Gidycz & Koss, 1989; Hall & Flannery, 1984; Hayman, 1971; Katz & Mazur, 1979; Krasner, Meyer, & Carroll, 1976; MaCahill, Meyer, & Fischman, 1979; Mann, 1981; McDermott, 1979; Medea & Thompson, 1974; U.S. Dept. of Justice, 1985; Walmsley & White, 1979; Warshaw, 1988). The problem has become so widespread that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has included reduction of rape and attempted rape of women aged 12 and older as a goal in its …

Ergonomic Evaluation Of Assistive Devices And Manual Methods For Resident-Handling Tasks In Nursing Homes., Ziqing Zhuang Jan 1995

Ergonomic Evaluation Of Assistive Devices And Manual Methods For Resident-Handling Tasks In Nursing Homes., Ziqing Zhuang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Resident-handling tasks have been identified as the primary cause of back injury among nursing professionals. The objective of this study was to evaluate resident-handling procedures to determine which procedures resulted in less biomechanical and/or psychophysical stresses to those personnel performing resident-handling tasks. The objective was accomplished through an ergonomic evaluation of different assistive devices and manual methods for performing two resident-handling tasks that place nursing personnel in nursing homes at a high risk of back injury--transferring residents from bed to a chair and lifting residents up in bed. Twelve assistive devices and two manual methods were evaluated in this laboratory …

Constructing The Chaucer Corpus: A Study Of Cambridge, University Library, Ms. Gg.4.27., Matthew Clark Wolfe Jan 1995

Constructing The Chaucer Corpus: A Study Of Cambridge, University Library, Ms. Gg.4.27., Matthew Clark Wolfe

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Cambridge, University Library, MS. Gg.4.27, brings together more of Geoffrey Chaucer's work than any other extant manuscript. It contains Troilus and Criseyde, The Canterbury Tales, Legend of Good Women, Parliament of Fowls, and other poems. MS. Gg.4.27 is also important for its unique spellings, its organization, and its value as a corpus. Based on my examination of the manuscript, I argue that MS. Gg.4.27 is the earliest surviving effort to create a corpus of Chaucer's poetry and that the manuscript and its production provide important information about the reception of Chaucer in the fifteenth century. As there are no manuscripts …

Political Culture And The Coal Economy In The Upper Monongahela Region: 1776-1933., Michael Edward Workman Jan 1995

Political Culture And The Coal Economy In The Upper Monongahela Region: 1776-1933., Michael Edward Workman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The industrialization of Appalachia traditionally has been understood in terms of the penetration and exploitation of the region by outside capitalists. The role of indigenous capitalists in the development of the coal and other industries has been neglected. Most development studies have focused on the Central portions of Appalachia, virtually ignoring the northern parts of the region, including the Upper Monongahela region of Northern West Virginia. Moreover, most studies of industrialization have focused on the rural, rather than the urban, parts of the region. Furthermore, the study of the role of coal miners and the miners' union (United Mine Workers …

Experimental Study On The Hydrodynamics In The Riser Of A Circulating Fluidized Bed., Heping Yang Jan 1995

Experimental Study On The Hydrodynamics In The Riser Of A Circulating Fluidized Bed., Heping Yang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Circulating fluidized bed technology has been widely employed in the energy conversion industry and drawn a considerable amount of research attention to itself. The world-wide research effort on the circulating fluidized bed partially comes from the new emission standards which impose very strict limitations on the coal-powered electrical industry. In the circulating fluidized bed riser, a dilute, upward core in the center region is surrounded by a dense, downward annulus. The solid cluster formation in the annulus near the wall of the riser predominates the flow inside the riser and a transient interface of the core-annulus inside the riser exists. …

Staging Whoredom: Prostitution On The Renaissance Stage., Gregory George Winland Jan 1995

Staging Whoredom: Prostitution On The Renaissance Stage., Gregory George Winland

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Recent critics of Shakespeare's plays have acknowledged that the playwright's treatment of the lower classes is not as negative as once believed. Yet more critics claim the Shakespeare presented prostitutes and bawds, certainly among the lowest members of society, with callous indifference if not contempt. The plays that take up the issue of illicit sex reveal that Shakespeare's prostitutes and bawds are given the opportunity to speak about their problems from the stage. His plays consistently imply that the prostitutes are not a fountainhead of evil, that they carry out their profession simply as a means of survival. The dissertation …

Psychometric Properties Of The Multiple Eating Antecedents Scale (Meal): A Behavioral Assessment Instrument For Measuring Diet Nonadherence In Diabetes Mellitus., Janice Rhea Triplett Jan 1995

Psychometric Properties Of The Multiple Eating Antecedents Scale (Meal): A Behavioral Assessment Instrument For Measuring Diet Nonadherence In Diabetes Mellitus., Janice Rhea Triplett

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The Multiple Eating Antecedent Scale (MEAL) is a behavioral instrument used to measure diet nonadherence in people with diabetes mellitus. The current study was conducted to gather additional reliability and validity indicators of the MEAL. A prospective design was used to measure diet, blood glucose, stress and adherence in 38 adults with blood Type I and Type II diabetes mellitus for four consecutive days. Comparisons were made between self-monitoring data and MEAL scores. In addition MEAL category scores were compared to established diabetes-specific questionnaires as a measure of MEAL validity. Results indicated that the MEAL has good one week test-retest …
