Power Market Cybersecurity And Profit-Targeting Cyberattacks, Qiwei Zhang Aug 2022

Power Market Cybersecurity And Profit-Targeting Cyberattacks, Qiwei Zhang

Doctoral Dissertations

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many companies and business to operate through remote platforms, which has made everyday life and everyone more digitally connected than ever before. The cybersecurity has become a bigger priority in all aspects of life. A few real-world cases have demonstrated the current capability of cyberattacks as in [1], [2], and [3]. These cases invalidate the traditional belief that cyberattacks are unable to penetrate real-world industrial systems. Beyond the physical damage, some attackers target financial arbitrage advantages brought by false data injection attacks (FDIAs) [4]. Malicious breaches into power market operations could induce catastrophic consequences on …

Modeling And Optimization Algorithm For Sic-Based Three-Phase Motor Drive System, Ren Ren Aug 2020

Modeling And Optimization Algorithm For Sic-Based Three-Phase Motor Drive System, Ren Ren

Doctoral Dissertations

More electric aircraft (MEA) and electrified aircraft propulsion (EAP) becomes the important topics in the area of transportation electrifications, expecting remarkable environmental and economic benefits. However, they bring the urgent challenges for the power electronics design since the new power architecture in the electrified aircraft requires many benchmark designs and comparisons. Also, a large number of power electronics converter designs with different specifications and system-level configurations need to be conducted in MEA and EAP, which demands huge design efforts and costs. Moreover, the long debugging and testing process increases the time to market because of gaps between the paper design …

Electric Power System Operations With A Variable Series Reactor, Xiaohu Zhang May 2017

Electric Power System Operations With A Variable Series Reactor, Xiaohu Zhang

Doctoral Dissertations

Series FACTS devices, such as a Variable Series Reactor (VSR), have the ability to continuously regulate the transmission line reactance so as to control power ow. This research work evaluates the benefits brought by VSRs in different aspects of power system and develops efficient planning models and algorithms to provide optimal investment plan for the VSRs.

First, an optimization approach capable of finding both optimal locations and settings of VSRs under a specific operating condition is developed. The tool implements a full ac model as well as detailed models for different power system components.

Second, an optimization tool which can …

Generation Scheduling For Power Systems With Demand Response And A High Penetration Of Wind Energy, Guodong Liu May 2014

Generation Scheduling For Power Systems With Demand Response And A High Penetration Of Wind Energy, Guodong Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

With renewable energy sources and demand response programs expanding in many power systems, traditional unit commitment and economic dispatch approaches are inadequate. The power system is changing to one where there is control with uncertainty for both generation and load. Alternative power system scheduling methods capable of aggregating the uncertainty of wind power and demand response, while maintaining reliable and economic performance are investigated in this work. The research addresses four aspects of these changes.

First, a probabilistic method is proposed to maintain uniform system reliability level in the hour-ahead economic dispatch by quantifying different levels of required spinning reserve. …

Optimal Distribution Reconfiguration And Demand Management Within Practical Operational Constraints, Benyamin Moradzadeh Aug 2013

Optimal Distribution Reconfiguration And Demand Management Within Practical Operational Constraints, Benyamin Moradzadeh

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on specific aspects of the technical design and operation of a `smart' distribution system incorporating new technology in the design process. The main purpose of this dissertation is to propose new algorithms in order to achieve a more reliable and economic distribution system.

First, a general approach based on Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) is proposed to formulate the reconfiguration problem for a radial/weakly meshed distribution network or restoration following a fault. Two objectives considered in this study are to minimize the active power loss, and to minimize the number of switching operations with respect to operational constraints, …

Unit Commitment Methods To Accommodate High Levels Of Wind Generation, Alexander Charles Melhorn Aug 2011

Unit Commitment Methods To Accommodate High Levels Of Wind Generation, Alexander Charles Melhorn

Masters Theses

The United State’s renewable portfolio standards call for a large increase of renewable energy and improved conservation efforts over today’s current system. Wind will play a ma jor role in meeting the renewable portfolio standards. As a result, the amount of wind capacity and generation has been growing exponentially over the past 10 to 15 years. The proposed unit commitment method integrates wind energy into a scheduable resource while keeping the formulation simple using mixed integer programming. A reserve constraint is developed and added to unit commitment giving the forecasted wind energy an effective cost. The reserve constraint can be …
