Examination Of The Bureau Of Land Management's Implementation Of The Wild, Free-Roaming Horse And Burro Act At Red Rock National Conservation Area, Christine E. Brehm
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
For unknown reasons horses went extinct on the North American continent approximately ten thousand years ago and were subsequently reintroduced by Spanish settlers in the 1400's. As European settlers moved westward, horses were perceived as competition for grasslands and their numbers were curtailed. Wild horses were granted Federal protection in 1959 with the passage of the 'Wild Horse Annie' law and further protected with the passage of the Wild, Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act of 1971. Through the Department of the Interior, the Bureau of Land Management was charged with management of wild horses on public lands. Physical searches of …

Deposition And Uptake Availability Of Lead Shot For Waterfowl At Honeybee Pond Within The Overton Wildlife Management Area, Nevada, Usa, Jason Eckberg
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Lead shot has been banned for hunting waterfowl since 1974, but lead poisoning continues to be a major problem in many waterfowl habitats. In December of 1999, soil samples were collected from the Honeybee pond at the Overton Wildlife Management area to determine the lead pellet concentration and the availability of lead shot to waterfowl. There were no shot pellets recovered from the thirty-one samples taken from the pond. Based on this information waterfowl do not appear to be exposed to lead in the pond areas at OWMA.

During the summer of 1999, soil samples were taken from the Overton Wildlife Management Area (OWMA), located in the Moapa Valley of Clark County, Nevada. Although lead shot has been banned for the hunting of waterfowl since 1986, it is still legal for upland game hunting. The field sampled serves primarily as a dove hunting area and is cultivated. A large sample size was taken to indicate the short-term effects of the deposition of lead shot in the area and a small sample size, the long-term. Lead shot was recovered from 64% of the small samples and the estimated concentration …

Mapping The Boulder City Wetlands Using A Global Positioning System (Gps) And A Geographic Information System (Gis), Jennifer Lea Bishop
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The Boulder City Wetlands is a constructed wetlands park located in Boulder City, Nevada, approximately 23 miles southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. Currently, a baseline study of water quality is being conducted in the Boulder City Wetlands. This baseline study of the wetlands is an important step in understanding the development of the Boulder City Wetlands over time. As wastewater is eventually introduced into the existing community tap water running through the wetlands, it is expected that the nitrogen within the water will enhance the growth of vegetation in the surrounding area. Comparing the vegetation growth over time is only …

The Biological Removal Of Phosphorus At The Clark County Sanitation District Wastewater Treatment Plant, Jon Robert Becker
The Biological Removal Of Phosphorus At The Clark County Sanitation District Wastewater Treatment Plant, Jon Robert Becker
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This research examines the influence of operating parameters on the enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) from the effluent of the Clark County Sanitation District (CCSD) wastewater treatment plant. Several parameters that influence EBPR were investigated, including wastewater composition: (e.g. BOD, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, Total P, Ortho-P, alkalinity, pH), dissolved oxygen levels, oxidation reduction potential, microbiology, volatile fatty acid concentrations, fraction of P in wasted sludge, and nitrification levels. Analysis of nitrate and effluent phosphorus levels indicated a strong correlation between the two parameters. Very strong denitrification, evidenced by very low nitrate levels, produced nitrogen gas that lifted microbes into the …

Evolution Of A Small Silicic System: The Mccullough Pass Caldera, Clark County, Nevada, Aaron Lee Sanford
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The McCullough Pass Caldera is a small caldera in southern Nevada formed by the eruption of the McCullough Pass rhyolites. The McCullough Pass rhyolites erupted as three successive rhyolitic magma batches from 14.12 to 13.98 Ma and produced the McCullough Pass caldera. Each magma batch was chemically zoned by sidewall crystallization prior to erupting. The first magma batch erupted to produce the McCullough Pass tuff and caused collapse of the Jean Lake caldera along a ring fracture identified by the pattern of Jean Lake domes. The second magma batch produced the Ramhead rhyolite and resulted in collapse of the Ramhead …

Housing Location Decision Under Environmental Risk: The Effects Of The Yucca Mountain Waste Repository, Christine Noel Dwyer
Housing Location Decision Under Environmental Risk: The Effects Of The Yucca Mountain Waste Repository, Christine Noel Dwyer
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Yucca Mountain is the site of a potential high-level nuclear waste repository in Nevada. The risks to health and safety of transporting and storing nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain may induce the residents of Nevada to move. When offered compensation, residents will weigh potential negative effects to their health from transporting and storing nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain against the amount of money offered. The presence of a threshold value between the bid amount offered and the level of risk perception indicates that at some level of risk, people cannot be induced to stay by compensation. My models indicate that …

Political Control Over Special Districts In Local Government: A Case Study Of The Las Vegas - Clark County Library District, John Thompson Stephens
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines the Las Vegas - Clark County Library District over the five year period from 1991 to 1995. Based on interviews, local media coverage and budgetary data, the work traces the development of the library district during its most turbulent times. As a case study of special districts or "functional feudalities", the Las Vegas - Clark County Library District provides an excellent microcosm for understanding competing elites, interest group politics, budgetary problems, and public perception as determinants of policy made by a non-elected governing board.
