The Phenomenology Of Panic Disorder In Adolescents, Wesley D Allan Aug 2000

The Phenomenology Of Panic Disorder In Adolescents, Wesley D Allan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Phenomenology of Panic Disorder in Adolescents examines correlates of panic disorder in adolescents. Specifically, 20 adolescents with panic disorder were compared with 20 adolescents with a non-panic anxiety disorder (e.g., overanxious disorder). Results showed that adolescents with panic disorder displayed higher levels of anxiety sensitivity (i.e., anxiety pertaining to the symptoms of anxiety such as heart palpitations). Based on the obtained results, anxiety sensitivity is proposed as a potentially critical variable in the examination of adolescent panic disorder.

Evoked Expectations And Evaluational Reactions To Accented English, Caridad F. Brito Jan 2000

Evoked Expectations And Evaluational Reactions To Accented English, Caridad F. Brito

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Researchers have found that variations in listeners' judgments of speakers are associated with the speakers' accent. It was hypothesized that: (1) Spanish accented speakers would be evaluated less favorably than standard English speakers; (2) listeners would rate both accented and non-accented speakers on the basis of their expectations and not according to the speakers' actual vocal characteristics; (3) listeners would evaluate speakers differently, depending upon the lexical complexity of the speech utilized by speakers; and (4) listeners would evaluate standard and nonstandard English speakers differently, depending upon the speakers' gender. One hundred-twenty subjects evaluated four speakers on semantic differential type …

Film And Architecture: Discovering The Self-Reflection Of Frank Capra And Frank Lloyd Wright Through Contextual Analysis, Marie Lynore Kohler Jan 2000

Film And Architecture: Discovering The Self-Reflection Of Frank Capra And Frank Lloyd Wright Through Contextual Analysis, Marie Lynore Kohler

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Film and architecture were analyzed to evaluate the rhetorical potential these media hold in communicating the self-reflection of their creators. In an attempt to uncover common communication elements which further link the relationship between film and architecture, specific works of director Frank Capra and architect Frank Lloyd Wright were examined. The study utilizes both an historical, case study approach, combined with a contextual analysis of two selected works. Because Zettl's (1990) theory of applied media aesthetics emphasizes the importance of the medium in the communication process, this methodology was applied to Capra's film It's A Wonderful Life and Wright's building …

A Downward Spiral: Young People, The Media, And Political Disengagement, Jacqueline M Maloy

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study examines whether political disengagement is related to the amount and/or type of television that young people watch. The study was conducted through survey research at University of Nevada, Las Vegas, with over one hundred undergraduate participants. It demonstrates that there is no relationship between the amount of television which students watch and their political engagement. However, it also demonstrates that there is a relationship between the types of television programs which students watch and their attitudes toward politics and politicians. Frequent viewers of local news feel less trusting toward the government in Washington, whereas frequent viewers of late-night …

The Effect Of Feedback At Test On Source Memory Performance, Shelby Kainani Morita Jan 2000

The Effect Of Feedback At Test On Source Memory Performance, Shelby Kainani Morita

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Previous research has demonstrated that witnesses can come to believe they saw details that were only suggested to them after the witnessed event. For both theoretical and practical reasons, there is interest in developing techniques that reduce the effect of misleading post-event information. The present study examined the effect of receiving feedback at the time of retrieval on eyewitness suggestibility. All participants watched a videotaped crime of a home burglary and then answered questions that contained misleading information. On a final source memory test, participants that were provided with feedback as to the accuracy of their attributions during the first …

Making Choices Real: Increasing Electoral Participation By Voting For None, Shanna S Phillips

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

While Nevada legislators have consistently changed Nevada's election laws in order to keep up with the advance of modern society, there are several problems with Nevada's election rules. I intend to discuss reforms that could increase the effectiveness of the "none of these candidates" law in Nevada. First, I will assess the need for a binding "none of these candidates" law since the 1970's. I will track patterns of electoral participation so that I can assess the impact of Nevada's electoral laws on the voters of our state. Next, I will define the problems with Nevada's electoral structure and address …

A Marxist Analysis Of An Editorial Column As A Site Of Struggle For Meaning, Theresa Hubbard Pfeifer Jan 2000

A Marxist Analysis Of An Editorial Column As A Site Of Struggle For Meaning, Theresa Hubbard Pfeifer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study calls into question the repressive authoritarianism of state-corporate capitalism and the "march of the megamedia" by investigating the media's role in perpetuating and sustaining hegemony. According to Marxist critics, the collective operations of the culture industry have worked to destroy the revolutionary potential of the working class. In a resistant textual reading and content analysis utilizing Gramsci's theory of hegemony, this study looks at how a newspaper editorial fatalizes readers into passive acquiescence of the prevailing political and socioeconomic system. To gain the willing consent of the masses, the technocratic elites of media systems create a world that …

Wounded Knee, 1973: Consummatory And Instrumental Functions Of Militant Discourse, Lucie Moya Melchert

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Little academic research exists of the American Indian takeover of the hamlet of Wounded Knee, South Dakota in 1973. This thesis is an analysis of the discourse of the Wounded Knee incident, which served dual purposes for the activists. First, American Indian discourse served as a reinforcing agent to American Indians, both at Wounded Knee and across the country. Second, the rhetoric was meant to effect change within the general American public. This thesis will adopt and expand on Randall Lake's 1983 theory of the consummatory function of rhetoric by dissecting the fascinating discourse that shaped the identity of the …

Gospel Of The Heavenly Mother, Jennilyn F Hass Jan 2000

Gospel Of The Heavenly Mother, Jennilyn F Hass

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A collection of poems, Gospel of the Heavenly Mother asks, and attempts to answer, questions regarding the freedom that is available to the individual within a power structure. The two structures examined in the book are the grammar of the English language and organized religion, specifically the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The poems enact the belief that as we reorient ourselves to these structures, freedom is possible; by usurping the syntax in which we communicate (and therefore the language by which we understand God and our relationship to Him/Her), we gain the ability to speak more fully …

The Rise And Fall Of A Wall And A Dialect: Observations Of Shifting Linguistic Behavior Among Former East Berliners, Anja Vogel Jan 2000

The Rise And Fall Of A Wall And A Dialect: Observations Of Shifting Linguistic Behavior Among Former East Berliners, Anja Vogel

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

After the dividing wall between East and West Berlin fell in 1989 many changes occurred on what was formerly the eastern side of the city. Polls taken soon after found out that the East Berliners' excitement about the reunification vanished quickly. One of the more prominent---but largely ignored---new problems was the linguistic barrier that had developed between East and West during the forty years of separation; The people in and around Berlin speak a regional dialect, Berlinish. Unbeknownst to most Berliners, the dialect took on a vastly different symbolic meaning for the people in the West than it did for …

Die Deutschen Enwanderer In Sacramento: German Immigrants In Sacramento, 1850--1859, Carole Cosgrove Terry Jan 2000

Die Deutschen Enwanderer In Sacramento: German Immigrants In Sacramento, 1850--1859, Carole Cosgrove Terry

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The economic and political conditions in Europe pushed German immigrants from their homelands, while the gold rush in California pulled them with dreams of riches. Some came directly from Germany, some made an intermediate stop in the United States, but, after arriving in California, many went to Sacramento. A small nucleus of permanent residents created an ethnic community where they practiced the German tradition of Vereinswesen, supported each other economically through loans and ready employment and, led by their Turnverein, continued practicing their customs and rituals emphasizing frivolity and celebration as they had in the "fatherland." Rather than assimilate, they …

The Seer's Abacus, Sasha Megan Steensen Jan 2000

The Seer's Abacus, Sasha Megan Steensen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Negative Capability is the capacity to subtract the self so that there is room to add the other. Simone Weil, John Keats, Jack Spicer and Emily Dickinson suggest that the poet ought to renounce the self so as to offer up her own voice as a sacrifice to the world. The poet who hopes to speak for others must become no Body so that she can become every Body---she must subtract so that she can add. Weil insists that in order to annihilate the self, one must pay close attention to something other than her own ego. The poet must …

Pultrusion Of Commingled Thermoplastic Composite Materials, Vijay Anand Ananthakrishnan Jan 2000

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The work involves the analysis and verification of the pultrusion process. The pultrusion machine at UNLV was improved by modifying the consolidation and the cooling system. A comparative study of the material properties of the pultrusion process and the compression molding were done with the theoretical material properties. This involved a series of compression molding experiments of the commingled material followed by the pultrusion process itself. The results were then confirmed by a series of mechanical tests of the material obtained as a result of the pultrusion and the compression molding processes in the Material Test System (MTS) machine. The …

The purpose of this study is to analyze the efficacy of a problem gambling training class to train adult learners and to determine whether the attitude of this sample towards problem gambling affects their ability to learn about this issue. A survey instrument was designed by the author. The researcher used frequency distribution, crosstabulations, and linear regression to analyze the collected data. The survey sample consisted of adult gaming employees in Las Vegas who attended compulsory problem gambling awareness training; What makes this topic, problem gambling, provocative is that people have difficulty accepting that the pursuit of the intangible product …

On The Come: A Novel, David Smith Stevens Jan 2000

On The Come: A Novel, David Smith Stevens

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A creative, book-length work of fiction written at the end of the 20 th Century, this dissertation invariably converses in narrative concerns common to contemporary fiction, such as character point of view, plot and theme; however, in a narrower focus, specific issues of story and story telling and their relations to personal identity are examined through the maturation of a protagonist. As members of any society, we witness events common to a percentage of the whole but the meaning assigned to the common event may vary for each individual. For example, an automobile accident is a single event; however, every …

Imaging The Mantle In Southwestern, Utah Using Geochemistry, And Geographic Information Systems, Reina Fern Downing Jan 2000

Imaging The Mantle In Southwestern, Utah Using Geochemistry, And Geographic Information Systems, Reina Fern Downing

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Basaltic volcanism is common in the transition zone from the Basin and Range to the Colorado Plateau. This study focuses on an 80 km long transect containing seven separate basalt fields spaced less than 20 km apart. The transect extends from eastern Nevada through northwestern Arizona and into southwestern Utah, across the crustal boundary defined as the transition zone; Geochemistry and geographic information systems (GIS) define the geometry and orientation of a mantle boundary trending approximately E-W, almost perpendicular to the crustal boundary. This study suggests that there is no genetic link between the mantle boundary and crustal boundary between …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

I examined soil and vegetation characteristics on a 60 yr chronosequence of abandoned paved roads in Puerto Rico. Rapid recovery obscured successional changes in soil regeneration. Littermass, bulk density, soil moisture, soil organic matter, and total Kjeldahl nitrogen reached forest levels within 11 yr of road abandonment despite residual pavement. Road soil pH showed a clear successional trend, and approached the more acidic forest soils within 60 yr. Pool sizes were similar to the forest by ≥30 yr; Road revegetation displayed strong successional trends across the chronosequence. Vegetation on roads abandoned for ≥30 yr reached a mature forest state for …
