An Approach To Building A Secure And Persistent Distributed Object Management System, Yu Kin Ho Jan 1996

An Approach To Building A Secure And Persistent Distributed Object Management System, Yu Kin Ho

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) proposed by the Object Management Group (OMG) is a widely accepted standard to provide a system level framework in design and implementation of distributed objects. The core of the Object Management Architecture (OMA) is an Object Request Broker (ORB), which provides transparency of object location, activation, and communications. However, the specification provided by the OMG is not sufficient. For instance, there are no security specifications when handling object requests through the ORBs. The lack of such a security service prevents the use of CORBA from handling sensitive data such as personal and corporate …

Two-Dimensional Finite Element Model For Heat Transfer In Residential Attic Using An Attic Barrier System, Neezar Taher Alsaiegh Jan 1996

Two-Dimensional Finite Element Model For Heat Transfer In Residential Attic Using An Attic Barrier System, Neezar Taher Alsaiegh

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A two-dimensional finite element model is developed to simulate the thermal performance of a residential attic. The attic is ventilated using an evaporative cooler for the occupied space which vents its exhaust air into the attic. The attic is also ventilated by outside air introduced at the perimeter(soffit) of the attic ceiling and is exhausted at the ridge of the roof; The thermal effects of an installed Attic Radiant Barrier System (ARBS) on the underside of the roof are also investigated. The model is steady state in nature using different solar insolation fluxes and ambient temperatures as driving functions at …

Measuring The Accuracy Of Page-Reading Systems, Stephen Vincent Rice Jan 1996

Measuring The Accuracy Of Page-Reading Systems, Stephen Vincent Rice

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Given a bitmapped image of a page from any document, a page-reading system identifies the characters on the page and stores them in a text file. This "OCR-generated" text is represented by a string and compared with the correct string to determine the accuracy of this process. The string editing problem is applied to find an optimal correspondence of these strings using an appropriate cost function. The ISRI annual test of page-reading systems utilizes the following performance measures, which are defined in terms of this correspondence and the string edit distance: character accuracy, throughput, accuracy by character class, marked character …

Ocrspell: An Interactive Spelling Correction System For Ocr Errors In Text, Eric Stofsky Jan 1996

Ocrspell: An Interactive Spelling Correction System For Ocr Errors In Text, Eric Stofsky

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis we describe a spelling correction system designed specifically for OCR (Optical Character Recognition) generated text that selects candidate words through the use of information gathered from multiple knowledge sources. This system for text correction is based on static and dynamic device mappings, approximate string matching, and n-gram analysis. Our statistically based, Bayesian system incorporates a learning feature that collects confusion information at the collection and document levels. An evaluation of the new system is presented as well.

Optimal Var Compensation On A Utility Transmission System, Douglas Earl Harshbarger Jan 1996

Optimal Var Compensation On A Utility Transmission System, Douglas Earl Harshbarger

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This paper presents a method for realizing power loss and reactive power flow reductions on an electrical power transmission system. The method determines the size and location of reactive power compensating capacitors. In the first phase, candidate busses (nodes) are identified by determining which substations are physically able to accommodate new capacitor and associated switching apparatus. Phase two employs an iterative search technique, the Western System Coordinating Council (WSCC) power flow program and heuristic inputs to choose the single buss most sensitive to real power loss reduction. Reactive power loss reduction and reactive power intertie flow are secondary factors also …

Application Of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (Atm) Technology To Picture Archiving And Communication Systems (Pacs): A Survey, Sridharan R Madabhushanam Jan 1996

Application Of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (Atm) Technology To Picture Archiving And Communication Systems (Pacs): A Survey, Sridharan R Madabhushanam

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (R-ISDN) provides a range of narrowband and broad-band services for voice, video, and multimedia. Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) has been selected by the standards bodies as the transfer mode for implementing B-ISDN; The ability to digitize images has lead to the prospect of reducing the physical space requirements, material costs, and manual labor of traditional film handling tasks in hospitals. The system which handles the acquisition, storage, and transmission of medical images is called a Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). The transmission system will directly impact the speed of image transfer. Today the most …

Governance Systems In The Emerging Corporation: An Ethnography Of The Hard Times At Softalk, Robert Schmidt Jan 1996

Governance Systems In The Emerging Corporation: An Ethnography Of The Hard Times At Softalk, Robert Schmidt

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study examines the use of sensemaking and power/influence in the governance process of an emerging corporation. It emphasizes the use of the interpretive paradigm in examining the ways in which reality is socially constructed by a board of directors. This text explores the definition of governance at the emerging corporation from the inside. It examines the effects of board decisions on the corporation by focusing on a specific emerging corporation--here fictiously identified as "Softalk Corporation"--in a major American city. Through this case the author examines how situations were officially defined, and, how these official definitions translated into real operating …

Cost Calculation Of Ancillary Services Including System Security, Automatic Generation Control And Reactive Power, Mohammad Shahzad Lateef Jan 1996

Cost Calculation Of Ancillary Services Including System Security, Automatic Generation Control And Reactive Power, Mohammad Shahzad Lateef

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The recent changes in the electric utility industry due to the deregulation of the industry have created an immense need for the evaluation of all the services provided. The electric utility companies all across the United States have been providing these services for a long period of time. However, under the light of current deregulation, each one of these services have to be identified and evaluated separately. This thesis discusses three of these services, including security of the power system operation (Spinning and operating reserves), Automatic Generation Control (Load Following) and reactive power support. These three services are vital in …

Developing A Traffic Control Device Maintenance Management System Interfacing With Gis, Diane I Morse Jan 1996

Developing A Traffic Control Device Maintenance Management System Interfacing With Gis, Diane I Morse

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Roadway systems contain a wide variety of spatially distributed physical features which require installation, maintenance and replacement. These features include traffic control devices such as signs, signals, pavement markings and streetlights. Several technologies exist that can be utilized by the transportation sector to improve program management of a number of these features. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology provides a powerful environment for the capture, storage, retrieval, analysis, and display of spatial (locationally defined) data. A need exists to provide an inventory of the transportation physical plant to interface with a work management system. Information pertaining to the number and condition …
