This research examined foundational educational components to create an art curriculum for early learners. The curriculum integrates art education, literacy, social justice, and social-emotional learning. Various studies support that these components enhance confidence, communication, social awareness, and interpersonal skills. This thesis is a studio-based inquiry in which I explored the theme of home by developing a process research through art creation. I created a series of five paintings using water-based media and water collected from each place that I associate with the sentiments of home. Through research of artists, development of a process, and reflection on the process and the artworks, I not only gained deeper insight into my personal sentiments of home, but also drew implications for my teaching.

Based on my experience designing and implementing a team-taught course in Art and Geography, called GAGA, at a Charter high school in Atlanta, I conducted this action research in my classroom to solicit student feedback and assess effectiveness of interdisciplinary instruction in an integrated classroom. Results support the benefits of interdisciplinary education, and helped to reveal the strength and weaknesses of each project that my partner and I have created. I intend to continue polishing this course to provide an engaging learning experience for future students. I am eager to showcase the results of my research at future conferences.

This paper explores various art education models and frameworks as resources informing the creation of an eighth grade project-based capstone unit. I reviewed literature and developed a wish list of desirable elements for implementing a series of lessons with a culminating project based final lesson. Based on my exploration, I incorporated elements from many of the models including choice-based art education and capstone projects. After creating the Capstone Unit, I reflected upon possible implications and offer suggestions for its future implementation in other art education environments.

I first studied how policies that promote a business-like ideology and standardized testing in schools have impacted art education in the United States. Caring is an essential part of any classroom environment, but most investigations about caring in schools do not include the voices of art educators. How art teachers perceive and model caring has not been addressed in previous literature. Looking through a theoretical lens shaped by Dewey, Vygotsky, and feminist theory, specifically an ethic of care, this study examined three elementary art teachers' caring practices and beliefs. The research conducted in this thesis is centered on the ESOL Hispanic student population, in the art classroom in Georgia. The information contained in this paper is meant to serve as a guide and resource for art educators with high populations of ESOL students in their classrooms. A review of current ESOL best practices in several content areas is included. This study investigated using literature as an alternative means to teach the art curriculum. Three widely used integrated curriculum models (Reading Improvement Through Art, Learning Through the Arts, and Champions of Change) were studied and analyzed in search of the best features for art-literature integration. A new curriculum is developed for two different grades using the Fulton County Elementary Art Education Curriculum standards as the foundation.
