The Assertive/Vulnerable Dimension Of Dreaming Style, William Andrew Peters

Masters Theses

This study involved the exploration of the Assertive/Vulnerable dimension of dreaming style. Assertiveness and Vulnerability, as characteristics of dreaming experience, were measured using the Dreaming Style Questionnaire-Revised that was derived from a revision of Gruber's 1988 Dreaming Style Questionnaire (DSQ.) For this study, the DSQ-R was administered to approximately 2500 participants. The structure, reliability, validity and waking correlates of the Assertive/Vulnerable scale of the DSQ-Revised was explored. Factor analysis replicated the Assertive/Vulnerable dreaming dimension, first uncovered by the original DSQ, as predicted, with the ten Assertive and Vulnerable items loading together to form one bi-polar factor. The exploration of sub-scales …

The Effects Of Family Planning On Malnutrition In Bangladesh, Ridwan Al-Rahman Jan 1996

The Effects Of Family Planning On Malnutrition In Bangladesh, Ridwan Al-Rahman

Masters Theses

Some of the best historical and archeological evidence has claimed that about a million years was required for the human race to reach the 250 million mark by the beginning of the Christian era. Pestilence, famine and war had then reduced the population increase to a tiny fraction of 1% per year, requiring 16 centuries for the world population to double to 500 million. However, by 1850, 250 years later, the population doubled to the one billion mark. As of 1993, approximately one and a half centuries later, the world population stood at about 5.5 billion. According to United Nations …

A total of ten subjects were selected to participate in the study. Eight were residents of nursing homes, …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Bifunctional Silica Gel Surfaces, Alufelwi Maxwell Tshavhungwe Jan 1996

Synthesis And Characterization Of Bifunctional Silica Gel Surfaces, Alufelwi Maxwell Tshavhungwe

Masters Theses

Bifunctional silica surfaces consisting of various combinations of the following organofunctional silanes were synthesized and characterized using diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy: hexamethyldisilazane, octyldimethylmethoxysilane, phenyldimethylethoxysilane, (3-aminopropyl) -dimethylmethoxysilane, ( 2 - cyanoethyl)triethoxysilane, and trimethylmethoxysilane.

The relative amounts of organosilanes loaded on a silica surface were obtained from band area ratios of IR bands. Ratios of organosilanes bonded to the same silica surface were calculated from normalized band areas of the isolated silanol peak. In reactions in which surface coverage was incomplete, the relative amount of inaccessible silanols was determined from the band area ratio of the silanol peak. Comparisons of organosilane loading …

Money Demand Determination In China, Jiang Wu Jan 1996

Money Demand Determination In China, Jiang Wu

Masters Theses

This paper provides an estimation of the money demand in China using a basic theoretical framework based on the quantity theory of money. Besides conventional independent variables included in the quantity theory of money, both the expected rate of inflation (serving as the measure of the opportunity cost of holding money) and the extent of monetization in China (serving as an institutional variable) are included in the money demand function. It is supposed that changes in the demand for money in China between 1952 to 1989 were highly correlated with the institutional shifts in monetary sector.

Mechanistic Studies On Malate Dehydrogenase From Escherichia Coli, S. Kirk Wright Jan 1996

Mechanistic Studies On Malate Dehydrogenase From Escherichia Coli, S. Kirk Wright

Masters Theses

Kinetic studies and chemical modification studies were performed on malate dehydrogenase from Escherichia coli (eMDH). Chemical modification studies using diethylpyrocarbonate and iodoacetic acid, along with log V/K profiles indicate that one ionizing group with a pKa between 7.9 and 8.5 acts as a general acid/base in the catalytic mechanism. Log V profiles suggest that malate binds to the correctly protonated form of the enzyme. These results imply that a histidine residue is required for catalysis.

A primary deuterium kinetic isotope effect of 1.43 (±0.14) was observed on V/K using malate-2-d, while no isotope effect was measured on Vmax …

James Welch's Winter In The Blood: Thawing The Fragments Of Misconception In Native American Fiction, Mario A. Leto Ii Jan 1996

James Welch's Winter In The Blood: Thawing The Fragments Of Misconception In Native American Fiction, Mario A. Leto Ii

Masters Theses

The conventional scholarly view of Native American literature asserts that Native authors often portray their characters as alienated and despairing individuals that are incapable of attaining the means for dispelling those negative feelings. As a result, the characters are presumably destined to forever wander the barren reservation, unable to grasp their fleeting cultural traditions or the modern Euroamerican way of life. James Welch, with his novel Winter in the Blood, challenges that stereotypical scenario by allowing his nameless protagonist to discover a previously unknown link to his traditional Blackfeet heritage. Through the knowledge of his ancestors and the unconscious …

Transforming A Legend: Significance Of The Wandering Jew In Shelley's Work, Matthew D. Landrus Jan 1996

Transforming A Legend: Significance Of The Wandering Jew In Shelley's Work, Matthew D. Landrus

Masters Theses

Although Percy Bysshe Shelley has been recognized for his use of the Wandering Jew, critics have failed to produce a definitive work examining how this biblical legend figures into an understanding of the poet's changing world views. Since a comprehensive analysis was lacking, I studied Shelley's treatment of the Wandering Jew in each work that included the character to determine whether or not a relationship existed between Shelley's management of the figure and the poet's world beliefs. This thesis records the results of that study.

In his earliest works involving the Wandering Jew--those written between 1810-1812--Shelley's treatment of the Wandering …

"Maybe I Have Character Too": Reconsidering Bernard Malamud's Seductresses, Jeff Vande Zande Jan 1996

"Maybe I Have Character Too": Reconsidering Bernard Malamud's Seductresses, Jeff Vande Zande

Masters Theses

Over the span of Bernard Malamud's career, a more than subtle difference is evident between the seductress of his first novel and his subsequent novels. Since Malamud has been accused by some critics as depicting one-dimensional women, I analyzed the metamorphosis of the author's seductress characters to determine whether the change lends a better understanding to the relationship between Malamud and his female characters. I used Jung's theory of the mother archetype and his understanding of the Lilith legends to analyze the role of each seductress.

In The Natural, the seductress is one-dimensional and plays a destructive role in …
