The unstable odd-Z, odd-N isotope 186Re exists in a mid-shell deformed region of the chart of the nuclides where long-lived nuclear isomers are common. 186Re (ground-state half-life T1/2 = 3.7186 d) has an isomer with a half-life of ~2.0 x105 y. The 186mRe isomer is a candidate energy-storage medium for a radioisotope power source of military importance that would operate on the principle of isomer depletion. Data about levels and transitions above the 186mRe isomer, absent from the adopted level scheme for 186Re, are needed to identify a means of depleting the isomer. …

In this thesis, the artefactual effects of the small muscle movements were investigated. Upper frequency bands (30 Hz) of the EEG signal were extracted in order to investigate the artefactual effects of the small muscle movements. When the contamination level is high, the detection of the small muscle artifact can be made with the 92.2% accuracy. If these artifacts are really small such as a single finger movement, the detection accuracy decreases to 64%. But, the detection accuracy increases to 72% after removing the eye blink artifacts. This research focuses on reflective inverse diffusion, which was a proof-of-concept experiment that used phase modulation to shape the wavefront of a laser causing it to refocus after reflection from a rough surface. By refocusing the light, reflective inverse diffusion has the potential to eliminate the complex radiometric model of indirect photography by creating a virtual light source at the first diffuse reflector that satisfies the line-of-sight requirement of dual photography. However, the initial reflective inverse diffusion experiments provided no mathematical background and were conducted under the premise that the process operated similarly to transmissive inverse diffusion.

This work focuses on the characterization of laser irradiated graphite oxidation using mid-wave infrared (MWIR) imaging Fourier transform spectroscopy (IFTS). Although graphite oxidation has been studied extensively, IFTS uniquely provides spatial characterization of the reacting plumes. Spatial maps of species and temperature provide much needed insight into the transport and kinetic mechanisms and are vital for validation of numerical efforts. The current study builds on previous work using IFTS to characterize graphite oxidation in buoyant flow. As off-nadir viewing platforms becoming increasingly prevalent in remote sensing, material classification and ID techniques robust to changing viewing geometries must be developed. Traditionally, either reflectivity or emissivity are used for classification, but these quantities vary with viewing angle. Instead, estimating index of refraction may be advantageous as it is invariant with respect to viewing geometry. This work focuses on estimating index of refraction from LWIR (875-1250 wavenumbers) polarimetric hyperspectral radiance measurements.

The Ultra Compact Combustor (UCC) presents a novel solution to the advancement of aircraft gas turbine engine performance. A high-g UCC design operates by diverting a portion of the axial compressor flow into a circumferential combustion cavity positioned about the engine outer diameter. The circumferential cavity (CC) provides the necessary residence length and time for combustion within reduced axial lengths; furthermore, high rates of centrifugal acceleration termed high-g loading are imposed upon the swirling cavity flow. This research investigates the behavior of fatigue crack growth rate in both laboratory air and saltwater (3.5% NaCl) environments for notched cruciform specimen made from 7075-T6 aluminum alloy sheet at different stress ratios. With biaxility ratio of 1, and frequency of applied load of 10 Hz, the crack growth behavior was investigated under in-plane biaxial tension-tension fatigue with 0.1, 0.5, 0.7 stress ratios and then compared them to study the effect of stress ratio on the crack growth rate. This dissertation addresses a problem found in supervised machine learning (ML) classification, that the target variable, i.e., the variable a classifier predicts, has to be identified before training begins and cannot change during training and testing. This research develops a computational agent, which overcomes this problem. The tension-tension fatigue behavior of a newly developed unitized composite material system was investigated. The unitized composite consisted of a polymer matrix composite (PMC) co-cured with a ceramic matrix composite (CMC). The PMC portion consisted of an NRPE high-temperature polyimide matrix reinforced with carbon fibers woven in an eight harness satin weave (8HSW). This thesis presents the results of a study to quantify the effects of biaxial loading on fatigue crack behavior in both air and saltwater (3.5% NaCl) environments from pre-cracked notched circular hole in a 7075-T6 cruciform specimen using a fracture mechanics approach. With stress ratio of R = 0.5, the crack growth behavior was investigated under fatigue loading with 0.5, 0, -0.5, and -1 biaxial stress ratio lambda. For spacecraft conducting on-orbit operations, changes to the structure of the spacecraft are not uncommon. These planned or unanticipated changes in inertia properties couple with the spacecraft's attitude dynamics and typically require estimation. For systems with time-varying inertia parameters, multiple model adaptive estimation (MMAE) routines can be utilized for parameter and state estimates. Cognitive Radio (CR) is a promising technology that works by detecting unused parts of the spectrum and automatically reconfiguring the communication system's parameters in order to operate in the available communication channels while minimizing interference. CR enables efficient use of the Radio Frequency (RF) spectrum by generating waveforms that can coexist with existing users in licensed spectrum bands. This work examines the scattered fields produced when a transient wave is reflected from an infinite perfect electric conductor (PEC) ground plane with multiple embedded cavities. Incident and reflected waves will be decomposed into transverse magnetic to the z direction (TMz) and transverse electric to the z direction (TEz) polarizations, with primary focus given to the TMz. The motivation of this research is to fuse information from an airborne imaging sensor with information extracted from satellite imagery in order to provide accurate position when GPS is unavailable for an extended duration. A corpus of existing geo-referenced satellite imagery is used to create a key point database. A novel algorithm for recovering coarse pose using by comparing key points extracted from the airborne imagery to the reference database is developed. As researchers strive to achieve autonomy in systems, many believe the goal is not that machines should attain full autonomy, but rather to obtain the right level of autonomy for an appropriate man-machine interaction. A common phrase for this interaction is manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T), a subset of which, for unmanned aerial vehicles, is the concept of the loyal wingman.
