Effects Of Beauveria Bassiana Mycelia And Metabolites Incorporated Into Synthetic Diet And Fed To Larval Helicoverpa Zea; And Detection Of Endophytic Beauveria Bassiana In Tomato Plants Using Pcr And Its Primers, Brian Michael Leckie

Masters Theses

Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin is an entomopathogenic deuteromycete that has been used in biological control of insect pests. Recent studies have revealed that B. bassiana is an endophyte of corn plants, and that plants colonized by the fungus had a reduction in tunneling from the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hubner) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae). In addition to corn, B. bassiana has been observed to grow endophytically in potato plants. Beauveria bassiana may also have the ability to colonize closely related plants and potentially reduce insect feeding on them.

This study has three objectives. The first was to evaluate the effect of …

Microevolutionary Processes In Chesapeake Bay (Virginia, Usa) Eelgrass, Zostera Marina L, Jennifer Michelle Rhode Jan 2002

Microevolutionary Processes In Chesapeake Bay (Virginia, Usa) Eelgrass, Zostera Marina L, Jennifer Michelle Rhode

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) is the northern hemisphere's dominant marine angiosperm, a species with both ecological and economic importance. Initial allozyme surveys of eelgrass populations in Chesapeake Bay (Virginia, USA) revealed substantial amounts of geographically-partitioned genetic variation, which could be the result of nonselective demographic processes, including founder events and drift. However, strong spatial variation in the environment and in eelgrass morphology suggests that differential adaptation of isolated beds to local environmental conditions could also produce these patterns. This dissertation used three sets of studies to investigate microevolutionary processes might produce the observed variation among Chesapeake eelgrass beds: (1) an …

Localization Of Expansin Expression During Adventitious And Lateral Rooting In Response To Auxin In Loblolly Pine, Fuyu Xu Jan 2002

Localization Of Expansin Expression During Adventitious And Lateral Rooting In Response To Auxin In Loblolly Pine, Fuyu Xu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Loblolly Pine is the most important and widely cultivated timber species in the southern United States. Due to its fast growth, it is extensively planted for lumber and pulpwood. Vegetative propagation will enhance gains from genetic improvement of tree species. Rooted-cutting is at present the most reliable non-somatic embryogenesis method for cloning specific genotypes. However, an abrupt decline of adventitious rooting capacity has hindered the application of vegetative propagation in loblolly pine. Unraveling the rooting mechanism may facilitate a way to overcome this barrier. Regulation of lateral and adventitious root formation by auxin has been demonstrated through the application of …

Relationships Between Rooting Restrictions, Radial Growth, And Drought Stress With White Pine (Pinus Strobus) Decline In Southern Maine, Megan L. Fries Jan 2002

Relationships Between Rooting Restrictions, Radial Growth, And Drought Stress With White Pine (Pinus Strobus) Decline In Southern Maine, Megan L. Fries

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Throughout southern Maine there was a noticeable decline and mortality of white pine (Pinus sfrobus) from 1997 through 2000 in dense pole-size stands. The decline was widespread, scattered, and happened simultaneously indicating that it was incited by an abiotic stress. Because only isolated stands showed decline and mortality, site factors likely predisposed trees to injury. Site factors are likely related to the widespread field abandonment that took place throughout southern and central Maine, and led to establishment of pure white pine stands in many areas. Although white pine can regenerate on many sites, some locations will have soil limitations, such …

The Fringing Halophytic Vegetation Of Lake Austin: A Study Of Mining Impacts And Vegetation Dynamics, Simone Vellekoop Jan 2002

The Fringing Halophytic Vegetation Of Lake Austin: A Study Of Mining Impacts And Vegetation Dynamics, Simone Vellekoop

Theses : Honours

Mining operations in arid regions of Western Australia are faced with many environmental management issues. One such issue is the disposal of mine water to the environment. Mine water is commonly discharged to nearby salt lakes under licence by the Department of Environmental Protection. Licence conditions dictate that the discharge water and the receiving environment be monitored to allow impacts on the environment to be detected. Salt lakes are associated with vegetation communities dominated by halophytic members of the Chenopodiaceae, While these plants are tolerant of salinity extremes, the germination stage of many species requires periods of lowered salinity. There …
