Effects Of Dietary Factors And Morphine Administration On Voluntary Alcohol Consumption And Dopamine Metabolism In Rats, Claudia Smithson Aug 1972

Effects Of Dietary Factors And Morphine Administration On Voluntary Alcohol Consumption And Dopamine Metabolism In Rats, Claudia Smithson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The effect of diet and dietary additives on voluntary alcohol consumption in male Sprague-Dawley rats was studied. Alcohol intake measured weekly and reported as ml of a 10% solution ingested per 100 grams body weight. A four week pre-experimental period was designed to determine individual tendencies to drink and thus to eliminate the high and low drinkers from the study. No difference was found in alcohol intake with either starch or sugar as the carbohydrate source; however, there was a greater weight gain ( p < .025) in those animals consuming sugar-based diets. Rats on poor-quality diets containing minimal amounts of vitamins and minerals continued to gradually increase alcohol consumption during the study. This diet, supplemented with coffee, caused the greatest significant increase in alcohol intake and the lowest weight gains. Addition of coffee to the diets significantly increased alcohol consumption (p< .005) but decreased growth rate (p < .0005) . However, when the poor quality diets were supplemented with vitamins and minerals, alcohol consumption was reduced by about 50% (p < .005) and weight gain was significantly increased (p < .0005).

The daily intraperitoneal administration of morphine sulfate significantly decreased alcohol intake (p < .02) and the per cent of total fluid consumed as alcohol (p < .02) but did not effect water consumption.

An attempt was …

The Comparative Histochemistry Of The Infective Oncospheres Of Oochoristica Osheroffi Meggitt, 1934, And Oochoristica Scelopori Voge And Fox, 1950, (Cyclophyllidea: Linstowiidae) With Notes On The Origins Of The Egg Membranes, Gary R. Coulter Jun 1972

Coulter

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Infective oncospheres of Oochorlstica osheroffi and Oochoristica scelopori were compared using fifteen histochemical tests. Vital stains were also used.

Carnoy’s-fixed gravid proglottids were vacuum-embedded in a paraffin-piccolyte mixture and cut transversely at 6 microns. Sections were tested for the presence of phosphatases, proteins, sclerotin precursors, nucleic acids, carbohydrates and acid mucopolysaccharides.

Oncospheres were histochemlcally very similar. Heavy concentrations of mucoproteins and glycoproteins were detected in the oncospheral coat of O. scelopori. Acid phosphatase was found in the embryophore of O. osheroffi, but could not be demonstrated in O. scelopori. No evidence of a sclerotized egg capsule was …

Studies On The Regulation Of Cell Growth And Contact Inhibition Using Concanavalin A And Dibutyryl Adenosine Cyclic Monophosphate, Robert W. Teel Jun 1972

Studies On The Regulation Of Cell Growth And Contact Inhibition Using Concanavalin A And Dibutyryl Adenosine Cyclic Monophosphate, Robert W. Teel

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Both dibutyryl cyclic AMP and trypsinized concanavalin A have been shown to inhibit growth in certain cell lines but little testing of these substances has been done using human tumor cell lines. Further, there are at this time no published experimental attempts to correlate the effects on growth with a particular phase of the cell cycle in any cell line.

My experimental data show that the human tumor cell lines HeLa, HEp 2 and KB exhibit pronounced inhibition of growth when treated with trypsinized concanavalin A and reach a contact-inhibited state at a density far below that to which these …

The Germfree Culture Of Three Species Of Triatominae: Triatoma Protracta (Uhler), Triatoma Rubida (Uhler), And Rhodnius Prolixus Stål, Stephen A. Nyirady

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Triatoma protracta protracta, Triatoma riibida rubIda, and two strains of Rhodnius prolixus were successfully reared germfree into the fourth generation. Triatominae eggs were disinfected externally with iodine and the nymphs reared in vinyl plastic germfree modules. Germfree mice were used as the host. This is the first report of Triatominae having been reared in a germfree environment. These bugs were never exposed to bacteria internally or externally to the fourth generation.

Comparisons of conventional control bugs with replicate germfree groups in the first two generations revealed but slight differences in developmental periods. The mean adult longevity of all …

Factors Affecting Calcification Processes In The Hermatypic Corals Pocillopora Damicornis And Porites Compressa, Conrad D. Clausen Jun 1972

Factors Affecting Calcification Processes In The Hermatypic Corals Pocillopora Damicornis And Porites Compressa, Conrad D. Clausen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Temperature affects coral distribution and it also affects rates of physiological processes. Little attention has been given through, to the relation between the basic effect of temperature on reaction rates at the molecular level and its effect on coral distribution at the organismic level. Incubating coral samples in sea water containing 45Ca incorporation as a measure of calcification rate, I studied the effects of temperature on calcification in two coral species, P. damicornis and P. compressa. CaCO3 deposition was chosen because of its basic importance in reef formation. Immediate effects of temperature on calcification rates were studied, as …

Marrow Isografts In The Oral Cavity Of Mice, Robert L. Merin Jun 1972

Marrow Isografts In The Oral Cavity Of Mice, Robert L. Merin

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The objectives of this study were to develop an animal model for testing oral bone and marrow transplantation that is adaptable to immunological studies; to determine the effect of an isogeneic graft of cancellous bone and marrow on the healing of surgically created defects; and to determine the fate of grafted isogeneic cancellous bone and marrow transplanted into defects. Fourteen CBA/H mice served as experimental animals and bilateral intraoral defects were prepared. The experimental side received isogeneic graft material while the other side served as a control. Osseous healing was found to be accelerated in the defects receiving graft material …

The Effect Of Various Nutrients On The Sporulation Of Trichophyton Rubrum, P. Jerry Austin Jun 1972

The Effect Of Various Nutrients On The Sporulation Of Trichophyton Rubrum, P. Jerry Austin

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Trichophyton rubrum was grown on a chemically defined media in an effort to find a substance that would give the maximum production of macroconidia. Twenty-one amino acids were tested and about one half of them were active in stimulating macroconidial formation. Eight purines and pyrimidines were also tested but none of them gave more than scanty sporulation. The base media used was Czapek solution agar (modified): the saccharose was replaced with an equal amount of glucose. The various nutrients were tested at two concentrations, 1.25 mg/ml and 0.25 mg/ml. Yeast extract and peptone were also included in the study since …
