Mathematical Model Of Placental Oxygen And Carbon Dioxide Exchange, Ester P. Hill Dec 1971

Mathematical Model Of Placental Oxygen And Carbon Dioxide Exchange, Ester P. Hill

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This model of placental CO2 and O2 exchange calculates the time course of changes in PCO2, [HCO3-], and [H+] in each of four "compartments" of placental exchange vessels: maternal erythrocytes, maternal plasma, fetal plasma and fetal erythrocytes. The changes in hemoglobin-bound CO2 (carbamate) and oxyhemoglobin contents within the erythrocytes are also calculated, permitting consideration of the Haldane and Bohr effects. Equations were written to represent one-dimensional steady state CO2 and O2 diffusion between concurrent maternal and fetal capillaries and the subsequent hydration, carbamino and oxyhemoglobin reactions. The equations …

The Relation Of Temperature To Calcification In Montipora Verrucosa, Walter W. Cox Aug 1971

The Relation Of Temperature To Calcification In Montipora Verrucosa, Walter W. Cox

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A method for quantitatively comparing calcification rates in coral was used to find an optimum growth temperature for Montipora verrueosa. This method is based on the uptake of the radioactive isotope ca45. By supplying the water the corals are growing i·n with a known amount of radioactivity and comparing this with the activity of the coral samples, a rate of Ca45C03 incorporation can be determined per unit of time.

Various tests show that inorganic exchange does not appear to be a significant factor in interpretation of the results obtained. The edge of a colony calcifies …

An Extension Of The Cochran Q Test, Soo-Young Cho Aug 1971

An Extension Of The Cochran Q Test, Soo-Young Cho

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The familiar x 2 test is ordinarily used to compare percentage distributions of categorical data for two or more independent samples. A more accurate com parison of the percentages is sometimes obtained if the samples consist of matched individuals. The NcNemar test is generally used when comparing only two related samples. Where there are three or more samples the Cochran Q test is used. Both of these tests apply only to the case of dichotomized responses. This thesis extends the Cochran Q test to the case where the responses are multinomial. A generalized statistic corresponding to Cochran's result is obtained. …

Root Exposure And Its Effect On The Fluid Movement Within The Tooth, William J. Busch Aug 1971

Root Exposure And Its Effect On The Fluid Movement Within The Tooth, William J. Busch

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study examined the fluid movement in dentin associated with the exposure of the root surface for varying periods of time ranging from 75 minutes to 30 days. Eight kittens received experimental defects on the roots of the canines. Just prior to sacrifice a fluorescing dye was injected intraperitoneally to make the fluid within the dentin visible under ultraviolet light. Frozen ground sections were prepared and examined. The results showed that the exposed side of the root had a reduced amount of fluid fluorescence when compared to the opposite side of the tooth which had an intact root surface. The …

The Degree And Time-Course Of Stress In The Patient Undergoing Cardiac Surgery, Hulda Esther Serra, Patricia Jo Yvonne Tygret Aug 1971

The Degree And Time-Course Of Stress In The Patient Undergoing Cardiac Surgery, Hulda Esther Serra, Patricia Jo Yvonne Tygret

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

An important nursing objective is to assist patients through stressful experiences. It has been assumed that cardiac surgery constitutes such a stress situation. For this reason, twenty-two patients undergoing cardiac surgery at Loma Linda University Hospital studied for the purpose of exploring the degree and time-course of were psychological stress.

The methodology consisted of administration of psychological tests before and after surgery; determination of urine catecholamines (UCA) before, during and after surgery; administration of a coping assessment tool before surgery, and a recall interview on the fifth day after surgery. The Multiple Affect Adjective Check List (MAACL)-Today form, and the …

The Duration Of The Effect Of Different Carbohydrates On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis, Judy L. Reeser Jul 1971

The Duration Of The Effect Of Different Carbohydrates On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis, Judy L. Reeser

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In order to determine the duration of the effect of glucose, fructose, sucrose, honey, starch, and orange juice on neutrophilic phagocytosis, 10 subjects underwent a complete series of carbohydrate tolerance tests. Blood samples were drawn at specific time periods following ingestion of 100 grams of each carbohydrate. Blood was then analyzed for glucose and phagocytic index (the mean number of bacteria engulfed per leukocyte); a red blood cell and white blood cell count and differential white cell count were done also on about 1/2 of the samples. In addition, 7 other subjects participated in a fasting study in which no …

Cardioregulatory Role Of The Abdominal Ganglion Of Aplysia Californica, George Maeda Jun 1971

Cardioregulatory Role Of The Abdominal Ganglion Of Aplysia Californica, George Maeda

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

An isolated heart-abdominal ganglion preparation of this mollusc was developed and used to study the cardioregulatory function of the ganglion and nerves. The heart was perfused with artificial sea water through an atrial cannula and the gastro-esophageal artery was catheterized for blood pressure monitoring. The presence and cardioregulatory effects of axons in the nerves was investigated by electrical stimulation. Fine-tipped glass microelectrodes inserted into ganglionic neurons were used to determine the relationship between the neuronal and cardiac activities.

The principal results are listed below.

  1. Primarily inhibitory responses are obtained from both right and left connective stimulation, with some evidence for …

The Effect Of Elevated Glucose On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis In Genetically Diabetic Mice, Larry B. Thompson May 1971

The Effect Of Elevated Glucose On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis In Genetically Diabetic Mice, Larry B. Thompson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Infiltration to an injury site or area of bacterial contamination by polymorphonuclear leucocytes (or neutrophils) is an early and essential phase of the early inflammatory reaction. Their action on foreign matter is the most critical step taken by body defense mechanisms in the first 24 hours. Anything which interferes with that action, phagocytosis, greatly hampers early inflammation. This study was designed to see the effect of elevated glucose levels on neutrophil phagocytosis in a unique strain of genetically diabetic mice.

Twenty-two diabetic and twenty-four control female mice were used. Blood glucose determinations and total white counts were made on each …

The Response Of Gingival Tissues To Alterations In Ph, Robert C. Jann May 1971

The Response Of Gingival Tissues To Alterations In Ph, Robert C. Jann

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the histopathological and clinical changes that occurred when a continuous supply of exogenous acid or base, at varying pH, was delivered adjacent to the gingival crest of the monkey. A related goal was to develop a monkey model system which would deliver test solutions continuously and atraumatically, to the experimental gingival sites.

Two young adult female monkeys had a perfusion apparatus attached to certain maxillary teeth so that test solutions were deposited atraumatically to the marginal gingival tissues. During the experimental periods the animals were kept in primate restraining chairs and fed …

Properties Of Salmonella Phage P3 After Subjection To Host-Controlled Modification By Passage Through E. Coli K-12, Benjamin J. Siapco May 1971

Properties Of Salmonella Phage P3 After Subjection To Host-Controlled Modification By Passage Through E. Coli K-12, Benjamin J. Siapco

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Five new bacteriophages were isolated from lysogenic S. potsdam in this laboratory. Group B phages (P3 and P9a) were found to have unique properties, including their capability to infect strains of E. coli K-12 and E. coli C+/L. Passage of the phages through these hosts modified them (host-controlled modification) so that their ability to infect their original host, S. potsdam, was reduced and only 1-4 per million were able to form plaques.

To help elucidate the biochemical basis of host-controlled modification in the Salmonella potsdam group of bacteriophages, the clear plaque mutant of one of them, P3-c …

Bacteriuria As A Precursor Of Intracatheter Encrustation, Namcy Moll May 1971

Bacteriuria As A Precursor Of Intracatheter Encrustation, Namcy Moll

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The problem with which this study was concerned was the development of criteria that could be used to determine when urinary catheter changes were necessary. By determining when encrustation occurred, it was felt that some complications could be eliminated by changing catheters before obstruction occurred due to encrustation.

It was the purpose of this study to: 1) explore some indications for catheter change, 2) determine if encrustation of urinary catheters necessitates catheter change, and 3) estimate potential criteria for a routine time for catheter changes.

Forty-five catheters were examined after their removal from patients. Flow rates were determined on 33 …

Histopathological Variations Of Periapical Granulomas And Radicular Cysts, Thanapen Kanchanasut May 1971

Histopathological Variations Of Periapical Granulomas And Radicular Cysts, Thanapen Kanchanasut

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The periapical dental granuloma and cyst is the most frequent sequela of pulpitis. These lesions are always intraosseous and often become quiescent after the acute phases are over, forming a space which primarily consists of chronic inflammatory tissue. This chronic inflammatory tissue usually appears as a one-centimeter area of punched out bone on the x-ray film and is referred to as a dental granuloma. Should epithelium choose to proliferate in this inflammatory area, it may undergo subsequent cystic degeneration forming the typical periapical cyst. While much has been written with regard to the etiology and treatment of the apical cyst …

Activity Analysis Of Personnel On Patient Trayline Assembly, June Bishop Jan 1971

Activity Analysis Of Personnel On Patient Trayline Assembly, June Bishop

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The systems approach in food service administration is the initial step in analyzing current procedures to determine the effectiveness of resource utilization. Analysis begins with observation of a system to provide possible explanations of the system behavior.

The purpose of this research was to determine through work sampling the proportion of both productive and nonproductive labor time of operators on the tray assembly, the labor time and labor cost required in each position and for each meal, and to test the hypothesis that there was no significant difference between the productivity index (trays per minute) during Phase A and Phase …

The Nature Of Salmonella Phage P3 Modification And Restriction By Growth In Escherichia Coli, Clark A. Pearson Jan 1971

The Nature Of Salmonella Phage P3 Modification And Restriction By Growth In Escherichia Coli, Clark A. Pearson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The Salmonella potsdam group B bacteriophage P3, which grows in the rough variant strain of S. potsdam (SP2-R) and E. coli KCS11, KW117, and C+/L with similar efficiencies, was restricted by SP2-R after a passage though E. coli. The entrance of restricted E. coli-grown phage DNA into nonpermissive SP2-R cells was confirmed by the finding that after adsorption of restricted 32P-labeled P3-C1·C+/L to SP2-R and removal of the adsorbed phage heads from cells, 80.3% of the labeled DNA activity sedimented with the cells. Thus restricted P3 DNA …
