On The Anatomy And Phylogeny Of The Zoarcidae (Teleostei: Perciformes), M. Eric. Anderson Jan 1984

On The Anatomy And Phylogeny Of The Zoarcidae (Teleostei: Perciformes), M. Eric. Anderson

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The eelpouts, Zoarcidae, are a group of bony fishes, most species of which inhabit continental shelves and slopes of boreal seas. There are about 200 species of eelpouts, most of which are rare in collections, thus they have been only cursorially studied by most workers. as a result, the systematics of the family is in a poor state. This work is a contribution to the improvement of that state. The anatomy of all nominal genera of Zoarcidae was studied in an attempt to reconstruct phylogeny and establish the limits of genera. From analysis of a matrix of 63 characters, the …

Food Habits And Body Composition Of Some Dominant Deep-Sea Fishes From Temperate And Tropical Regions Of The Western North Atlantic, Roy E. Crabtree Jan 1984

Food Habits And Body Composition Of Some Dominant Deep-Sea Fishes From Temperate And Tropical Regions Of The Western North Atlantic, Roy E. Crabtree

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Food habits of 23 species of demersal deep-sea fishes from the temperate Middle Atlantic Bight and the tropical Bahamas region are described. In addition, body composition parameters including percent water, ash, carbon, and nitrogen are discussed for 48 demersal species from these study areas. Food habits data on Bahamian species are combined with those from other studies in an attempt to describe the trophic structure of this tropical deep-sea fish assemblage. Numerical classification techniques are used to group species based upon similarity of diets. Four groups are evident, including a group which feeds largely on polychaetes, a second which feeds …

Anatomical Observations On The Ampullae Of Lorenzini From Selected Skates And Galeoid Sharks Of The Western North, William Raschi Jan 1984

Anatomical Observations On The Ampullae Of Lorenzini From Selected Skates And Galeoid Sharks Of The Western North, William Raschi

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The gross structure of the ampullae of Lorenzini and its distribution on the body of 40 species of skates (Rajoidei) and 5 species of sharks (Galeomorphii) were compared in an attempt to investigate correlations within this system to feeding mechanisms. Three general lines of morphological change are observed. A larger proportion of the ampullary pores are associated with the ventral surface of the dorsoventrally flattened skates than the more conically shaped sharks. The relative proportion of ventral pores is significantly reduced on those species inhabiting aphotic waters. Secondly, the more piscivorous rajoids possess an array of ventral pores which covers …

Feeding Strategies And Functional Morphology Of Demersal Deep-Sea Ophidiid Fishes, H. Jacque. Carter Jan 1984

Feeding Strategies And Functional Morphology Of Demersal Deep-Sea Ophidiid Fishes, H. Jacque. Carter

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The hypothesis is advanced that ophidiid fishes prevalent beneath oligotrophic tropical seas have evolved trophic specializations appropriate for existence in regions of low primary productivity where ultimate energy available for food production in benthic communities is low. The feeding strategies of these tropical dwelling deep-sea fishes are discussed within the context of this hypothesis. The feeding strategies of tropical dwelling deep-sea ophidiid fishes are examined through an analysis of food habits and examination of morphological features related to feeding. Three main modes of feeding are evident among these fishes: (1) predation upon small benthopelagic or planktonic organisms by small-bodied species …

Menhaden Distribution As Mediated By Feeding (Filter-Feeding, Phytoplankton), Kevin David Friedland Jan 1984

Menhaden Distribution As Mediated By Feeding (Filter-Feeding, Phytoplankton), Kevin David Friedland

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Distribution patterns of the Atlantic menhaden Brevoortia tyrannus) have been evaluated in respect to the feeding ecology of the species. Feeding experiments, functional morphology, and field distribution studies with young postmetamorphic fish were conducted to differentiate the feeding dynamics of different size menhaden, and to define the relationship between feeding and distribution. Feeding experiments were conducted with 138 mm fork length menhaden to determine their particle size-specific feeding abilities. The minimum size of particles filtered, the minimum size threshold, was 7 to 9 (mu)m. Phytoplankton larger than the minimum size threshold and smaller than 20 (mu)m upper limit for nanoplankton, …

Electron Microscopic Investigations Of Aspects Of Red Algal Reproductive Differentiation And Developmental Morphology, Sharon Thompson Broadwater Jan 1984

Electron Microscopic Investigations Of Aspects Of Red Algal Reproductive Differentiation And Developmental Morphology, Sharon Thompson Broadwater

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Ultrastructural studies of meiosis, as well as aspects of vegetative and reproductive development, in three species of red algae were conducted. An account of meiosis in Dasya baillouviana is presented and represents the first comprehensive account in red algae. In early prophase I, the nuclei of tetrasporangia have, first, axial cores and, later, synaptonemal complexes as well as an electron-lucent space of undetermined significance. In later stages, chromatin relaxes, presumed RNA synthesis occurs and cell size and organelle number greatly increase. Electron-dense bodies were found in the cytoplasm and compared to nuage, a substance found to be RNA in other …

A Genetic And Morphologic Comparison Of Macoma Balthica From The Eastern And Western North Atlantic, Brian W. Meehan Jan 1984

A Genetic And Morphologic Comparison Of Macoma Balthica From The Eastern And Western North Atlantic, Brian W. Meehan

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Macoma balthica is a Tellinid bivalve that is common to both marine and estuarine soft-bottom habitats of the northern hemisphere. to determine if populations on the eastern and western North Atlantic are conspecific, the labial palp morphology, shell shape and genetic composition of these populations were examined. Previously described differences in the labial palp morphology do not occur among the population investigated. Differences in the shell shape and genetic composition, determined by enzyme electrophoresis, were observed between populations from the eastern and western North Atlantic. Allopatric populations of Macoma balthica from the eastern and western North Atlantic can be considered …
