Pressure Retarded Osmosis: A Potential Technology For Seawater Desalination Energy Recovery And Concentrate Management, Joshua Benjamin Nov 2021

Pressure Retarded Osmosis: A Potential Technology For Seawater Desalination Energy Recovery And Concentrate Management, Joshua Benjamin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Currently, a significant challenge with reverse osmosis-based desalination is reducing the energy consumption and environmental impacts of the process. This project analyzed the viability of using pressure-retarded osmosis (PRO) for energy recovery in seawater desalination facilities using brine concentrate (the draw solution) and other water sources (the feed solution) such as wastewater effluent. The primary goal of this project is to decrease the cost and overall energy consumption of seawater desalination through PRO-based energy recovery. Process modeling, statistical and sensitivity analysis, energy and cost analysis, geospatial and GIS analysis, laboratory-scale testing, water quality analysis, SEM-EDS microscopy, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), …

Multi-Objective Optimization Of Green Transportation Operations In Supply Chain Management, Nayera Elgharably Jul 2021

Multi-Objective Optimization Of Green Transportation Operations In Supply Chain Management, Nayera Elgharably

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Supply chain is the integration of manufacturing process where raw materials are converted into final products, then delivered to customers. Supply chains consists of two basic integrated process that interact together: (1) production and inventory and (2) distribution and logistics. Maximizing competitiveness and profitability are of the main goals of a supply chain. Accounting only for economic impacts as variable and fixed costs does not serve the main goal of the supply chain. Therefore, considering customer satisfaction measures in distribution models is essential in supply chain management. Models that addressed the three objectives simultaneously handled one of the objectives as …

Studying Complex Aquifer Systems From Large-Scale Stratigraphy Development To Local Aquifer Storage And Recovery, Hamid Vahdat Aboueshagh Jul 2021

Studying Complex Aquifer Systems From Large-Scale Stratigraphy Development To Local Aquifer Storage And Recovery, Hamid Vahdat Aboueshagh

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Hydrostratigraphy model is an essential component of building valid groundwater models. Many challenges are associated with constructing hydrostratigraphy models which include geological complexities such as faults, domes, and angular unconformities. Developing a method with an emphasis on capturing big data to thoroughly inform large-scale models is one of the challenges addressed in the first part of this study. The method is predicated upon discretization of the study domain into tiles based on the geological dip direction and faults. The application of the method in the state of Louisiana with the utilization of more than 114000 well logs demonstrates promising results …

The Optimization Of Financial Investment In Project Safety Practices, Ryan Stewart Nielsen Jun 2021

The Optimization Of Financial Investment In Project Safety Practices, Ryan Stewart Nielsen

Construction Management

This research paper explains the notable benefits to pursing a comprehensive safety plan complete with the most cost-effective safety practices in the industry. Through communication with environmental health and safety professionals within the construction industry, it was determined that certain safety practices are deemed essential on any active jobsite. Enforcing mandatory jobsite safety training to all individuals entering a jobsite serves as the first line of defense when attempting to protect individuals and mitigate risk. This educational and effective safety practice highlights the potential safety concerns of a jobsite while also mitigating contractor liability if an accident were to occur. …

Exploring The Relationship Between Vehicular Emissions And Traffic Operations At Isolated Signalized Intersections, Abiral Dulal May 2021

Exploring The Relationship Between Vehicular Emissions And Traffic Operations At Isolated Signalized Intersections, Abiral Dulal

Civil Engineering ETDs

Most roadway transportation modes still run on petroleum fuels. Petroleum fuels are major sources of air pollutants, including hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2, which are together called NOx), Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), and particulate matter of size(PM10) and2 and BC). Mitigating pollution is a serious issue, and therefore, it is the engineers' and planners' responsibility to study and reduce emissions as much as possible. Emission levels are generally high at street intersections, which are places where vehicles tend to accelerate, decelerate, and idle. Emission levels at intersections are …

Optimization And Technology-Based Strategies To Improve Public Transit Performance Accounting For Demand Distribution, Charalampos Sipetas Apr 2021

Optimization And Technology-Based Strategies To Improve Public Transit Performance Accounting For Demand Distribution, Charalampos Sipetas

Doctoral Dissertations

Public transit is important to societies worldwide. The operation of public transit systems is generally associated with great benefits for the users, but there are also cases in which these systems demonstrate inefficient performance. Quantifying transit performance is an important area of research over the last decades. This dissertation presents models to improve transit system performance through optimization techniques and new technologies, recognizing the effects of non-uniform distribution of demand over space and time. The contributions span fixed route transit services and on-demand transit, as well as models for flexible transit operations that lie in between. Regarding fixed route systems, …
