This article presents a complex analysis of the impact of the technology of continuous casting of steel (CCS) on the rate of the air pollutant emissions from one of the Polish steel and iron plants. The emission sources occurring in the production process have been identified and their rate has been determined. The implementation of CCS has brought about significant changes in the production cycle of the steel plant and it also has caused an increase of the production effectiveness of steel products. The calculated environment effects have shown a considerable emission decrease of all pollutants in the scale of …

Determinantes Explícitos E Implícitos De La Deuda Externa Pública Peruana, José Manuel Martin Coronado

José-Manuel Martin Coronado

This research aims to prove that sound economic policies are nothing more that basic conditions for the foreign public debt problem. In fact, by studying the factors of public debt issues in Peru, Latin America and the emerging economies it’s clear that some implicit economic and non-economic factors have to be considered because of the social complexity and variable characteristics in emerging economies. This causes failures in economic policies assumptions, inefficiencies, distorted causality and nonrational behavior. This paper proposes, first, to perform a deep and comparative analysis of the foreign debt determinants in emerging economies, then, to allocate financial resources, …

Microstructure And Interface Characteristics Of B4c, Sic And Al2o3 Reinforced Al Matrix Composites: A Comparative Study

A.S. Md Abdul Haseeb

Three aluminium metal matrix composites containing reinforcing particles of B4C, SiC and Al2O3 (0-20vol.%) were processed. The stir-casting manufacturing route followed by hot extrusion was utilized, being one of the cost-effective industrial methods. A clear interfacial reaction product/layer was found at Al-SiC interface for composites held for a relatively long processing time (>30 min). No reaction product was observed at Al-B4C and Al-Al2O3 interfaces at the resolution limit of the SEM used. On the other hand, two secondary phases (alumina and another phase containing aluminium, boron and carbon) were found in the aluminum matrix away from the interface in …

Improving Economic Literacy: The Role Of Concurrent Enrollment Programs, Jerry M. Eversky, Donald H. Dutowsky, Gerald S. Edmonds

Jerry Evensky

This paper introduces Concurrent Enrollment Programs (CEPs), within the context of Syracuse University Project Advance (PA) Economics, as a way to improve economic literacy. We describe measures implemented to operate PA Economics as a high-quality CEP, as well as the National Alliance of Concurrent Education Partnerships to establish national standards. This study also contains results from administering to high school students taking PA Economics the nationally normed Test of Economic Literacy (TEL). PA students average nearly one percentage point higher than the AP/Honors Economics Group, and score considerably better than AP/Honors Economics in fundamentals and international economics. By cognitive level, …

Cross-Border Outsourcing: U.S. International Tax Pitfalls, Pratfalls, And Opportunities, Anthony C. Infanti Dec 2003

Cross-Border Outsourcing: U.S. International Tax Pitfalls, Pratfalls, And Opportunities, Anthony C. Infanti

Anthony C. Infanti

During the past decade, there has been a surge in outsourcing by businesses both in the United States and abroad. In the face of this surge in outsourcing as well as the trend toward outsourcing activities that come closer and closer to a business' "core," some commentators have underscored the need for businesses to make an educated decision about whether and what to outsource. This article, which, as its title indicates, is particularly concerned with cross-border outsourcing, is written in the same vein. It provides a non-exhaustive examination of the myriad of circumstances under which a decision to outsource the …

Ann-Based Technique For Predicting Voltage Collapse In Power Systems, Almoataz Youssef Abdelaziz Dec 2003

Ann-Based Technique For Predicting Voltage Collapse In Power Systems, Almoataz Youssef Abdelaziz

Almoataz Youssef Abdelaziz

Voltage stability problems have been one of the major concerns for electric utilities as a result of heavy loading of power system. This paper reports on an investigation on the application of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) in voltage stability assessment using the energy function technique. A multi-layer feed-forward ANN with error back-propagation learning algorithm is proposed for calculation of Voltage Stability Margins (VSM). Extensive testing of the proposed ANN based approach indicates its validity for determination of power system voltage collapse. Simulation results on two test systems are reported in the paper.

Structural Usable Speech Measure Using Lpc Residual, Ananth N. Iyer, Melinda Gleiter, Brett Y. Smolenski, Robert E. Yantorno Dec 2003

Structural Usable Speech Measure Using Lpc Residual, Ananth N. Iyer, Melinda Gleiter, Brett Y. Smolenski, Robert E. Yantorno

Ananth N Iyer

In an operational environment speech is degraded by many kinds of interferences. The operation of many speech processing techniques are plagued by such interferences. Usable speech extraction is a novel concept of processing degraded speech data. The idea of usable speech is to identify and extract portions of degraded speech that are considered useful for various speech processing systems. The performance reduction of speaker identification systems under degraded conditions and use of usable speech concept to improve the performance has been demonstrated in previous work. A new usable speech measure, based on the structure of Linear Predictive Coding (LPC) residual …

Enabling Work For People With Disabilities: A Post-Integrationist Revision Of Underutilized Tax Incentives, Francine J. Lipman Dec 2003

Enabling Work For People With Disabilities: A Post-Integrationist Revision Of Underutilized Tax Incentives, Francine J. Lipman

Francine J. Lipman

Federal employment strategies for people with disabilities do not seem to be working. Scholars argue that the Americans with Disabilities Act and similar legislation that exemplify the disability theory of integrationism with the goal of integrating people with disabilities into mainstream employment cannot succeed. Society cannot eradicate barriers to employment for people with disabilities simply by the integrationist modest approach of reasonable accommodation. A post-integrationist approach may be required to provide legitimate equal employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

In December 2002, the General Accounting Office released its report on its study of three federal business tax incentives to encourage …

The Relation Of Dietary Patterns To Future Survival, Health, And Cardiovascular Events In Older Adults, Paula Diehr

Paula Diehr

BACKGROUND: There have been few long-term follow-up studies of older adults who follow different dietary patterns. METHODS: We cluster-analyzed data on dietary fat, fiber, protein, carbohydrate, and calorie consumption from the U.S. Cardiovascular Health Study (mean age=73), and examined the relationship of the dietary clusters to outcomes 10 years later. RESULTS: The five clusters were named "Healthy diet" (relatively high in fiber and carbohydrate and low in fat), "Unhealthy diet" (relatively high in protein and fat, relatively low in carbohydrates and fiber); "High Calorie," "Low Calorie," and "Low 4," which was distinguished by higher alcohol consumption. The clusters were strongly …

The Camel's Nose Is In The Tent: Rules, Theories And Slippery Slopes, Mario Rizzo, Glen Whitman Dec 2003

The Camel's Nose Is In The Tent: Rules, Theories And Slippery Slopes, Mario Rizzo, Glen Whitman

Mario Rizzo

The authors provide a general theory for understanding and evaluating slippery slope arguments (SSAs) and their associated slippery slope events (SSEs). The central feature of the theory is a structure of discussion within which all arguments take place. The structure is multi-layered, consisting of decisions, rules, theories, and research programs. Each layer influences and shapes the layer beneath: rules influences decisions, theories influence the choice of rules, and research programs influence the choice of theories. In this structure, SSAs take the form of meta-arguments, as they purport to predict the future development of arguments in this structure. Evaluating such arguments requires …

Fallstudie L'Oréal - Vendor Managed Inventory Zwischen L’Oréal Und ”Dm Drogerie-Markt“, Enrico Senger, Hubert Oesterle

Hubert Oesterle

Fallstudie Brose Fahrzeugtechnik Gmbh & Co. Kg - Verbesserung Des Anfrageprozesses Im Einkauf Der Brose Fahrzeugtechnik Gmbh & Co. Kg, Enrico Senger, Hubert Oesterle

Hubert Oesterle

Manuelle Erfassungen konventioneller Angebote entfallen.

Fallstudie Röhm - Konsignationslager Zwischen Dem Degussa Geschäftsbereich Röhm Und Der Basf Coatings Ag, Enrico Senger, Hubert Oesterle

Hubert Oesterle

Alteration In Exile: Byron’S Mazeppa, Mark Phillipson Dec 2003

Alteration In Exile: Byron’S Mazeppa, Mark Phillipson

Mark Phillipson

A big shift in Lord Byron’s style is usually noted: the potently gloomy Eastern Tales, showcasing the magnetically alienated Byronic Hero, give way to a sharply contrasting style, that of the conversational Don Juan. Accounts of Byron’s career tend to treat this alteration as sudden or whimsical. In fact, it is intrinsically tied to exile, a connection illustrated by the verse romance Mazeppa (in many ways the forerunner of the contemporaneously begun Don Juan). Mazeppa is Byron’s most elaborate--even systematic--depiction of exile; its hero, tied onto a wild horse and sent off into the wilderness, learns to endure amid dramatically …
