Gender Pay Equity Analytics: A Case Study Of A Large Multinational Company, Linda Barrington, Kevin F. Hallock Dec 2019

Gender Pay Equity Analytics: A Case Study Of A Large Multinational Company, Linda Barrington, Kevin F. Hallock

Articles and Chapters

Compensation inequity is a key metric of workplace inequality. But there is scant documentation of internal company practices regarding gender pay equity and analytics. We present a rare case study of one company’s internal pay equity analytics. Using (anonymized) microdata from a single firm with more than 10,000 employees within ten selected countries, we estimated within-firm gender pay gaps, controlling for a host of measurable employee characteristics. We supplement these quantitative findings with some qualitative information about the organization’s associated HR practices for hiring and performance review as they relate to compensation. We also discuss the control variables chosen for …

Collaboration, Communication And Community-Building

Buffalo Commons

As the nation strives to improve police-community relations, safeguard the lives of officers and residents, and reduce crime while respecting civil liberties, voices around the country – from President Obama to ordinary citizens – are calling for more community policing. The Buffalo Police Department (BPD) has taken important steps toward embracing community policing, such as hiring community police officers, providing all officers with some community policing training, working collaboratively with community groups like Buffalo Peacemakers, improving language access for refugees and immigrants, and creating a scholarship program to diversify its recruits. Drawing on examples from across the country, this report …

Prepared Statement For The National Mediation Board, Kate Bronfenbrenner

Kate Bronfenbrenner

Testimony before the NMB hearings on the proposed rule change to the RLA that recommend changing the voting standard from the majority of eligible voters to the majority of votes cast. The testimony summarized findings from the first ever national academic study of organizing under the RLA. Based on findings that showed that under the RLA standard greater employer suppression is correlated with lower turnout while under the NLRB standard both the union and the employer work aggressively for high turn out, the author argued for changing the voting standard to majority of votes cast.

Cornell HR Review

[Excerpt] The developmental quality of job assignments is critical for building managerial competencies. What matters most isn’t how long junior managers have been in an assignment, but the nature of that assignment.

A New Alliance In New York State: A Progress Report On The Labor Movement’S Restructuring, Capacity Building, And Programmatic Work, Jeff Grabelsky Nov 2006

A New Alliance In New York State: A Progress Report On The Labor Movement’S Restructuring, Capacity Building, And Programmatic Work, Jeff Grabelsky

Jeffrey Grabelsky

The labor movement in New York State (NYS) has undergone a dramatic restructuring that is part of a national American Federation of Labor–Congress of Industrial Organizations program called the New Alliance. The purpose of the New Alliance is to build the capacity of local labor movements and to empower unions to help shape a region’s political and economic agenda. The restructuring in NYS led to the consolidation of twenty-five central labor councils into five area labor federations, each of which is developing the resources, staff, and leadership to help grow labor’s regional power across the state. This article describes the …

Reducing Inequality In Higher Education: Where Do We Go From Here?, Ronald G. Ehrenberg Sep 2005

Reducing Inequality In Higher Education: Where Do We Go From Here?, Ronald G. Ehrenberg

Working Papers

Differences in inequality in college enrollment rates across students from families of different socioeconomic levels have only marginally narrowed since the early 1970s. Moreover, students from lower-income families are much more likely to start higher education in two-year public colleges and public four-year institutions than are their higher income counterparts. Among students who initially enter four-year institutions, six year graduation rates of students from families with incomes of less than $50,000 are substantially less than the graduation rates of students from families with incomes of more than $75,000. Finally, at a set of our nation’s most selective private colleges and …
