International student mobility is considered among young travelers an opportunity to acquire a one-of-a-kind experience, making the host destination the perfect scenario where such experiences can take place. Since travelling is strongly associated with students’ mobility, and it is well documented that this concept is related to shaping travelers’ perceptions of self through experiences with other people and places, this case study explores the role of a host destination in the international students’ mobility experience. Thirty-three in-depth semi-structured interviews were performed to international students from different nationalities who have finished a tourism master’s degree program at the University of Girona, …

Introduction: This paper addresses the TTRA Canada conference sub-theme “Future-Proofing: Learning from Today to Build Back Tomorrow.” The pandemic has accelerated discussion about the socioeconomic and environmental impacts of tourism, social equity, workers’ dignity, as well as the long-term climate crisis. Tourism and the pandemic have led to a series of discussions about whether tourism can indeed be sustainable (e.g., Benjamin et al., 2020). The fact that the tourism industry has been the economic activity that was the most affected by the pandemic feeds this discussion (Della Lucia, Giudici, & Dimanche, 2021) . The sector has shown that it …

Four thousand years of shaping the landscape, developing sustainable agricultural practices and products, and forming a symbiotic relationship with ecological systems in the Aposelemis Valley of Crete has been disrupted due to the building of a large dam in the heart of that landscape. The politics and decision-making that resulted in the building and implementation of this dam are already documented and analyzed in a recent paper (Chifos, et al, 2019). This paper re-examines what happened in this Valley from the perspective of the cultural/heritage advocates and where the barriers to protecting and maintaining this landscape were and still are. …

Profiling The Emotional Peaks And Valleys In Stories Of Cross-Border Shopping, Michael S. Mulvey, Charles E. Gengler Jun 2019

Profiling The Emotional Peaks And Valleys In Stories Of Cross-Border Shopping, Michael S. Mulvey, Charles E. Gengler

TTRA Canada 2019 Conference

The stories that travellers tell provide valuable insight to tourism managers responsible for shaping travel experiences. Access to consumer stories has never been greater due to the rise of online forums, reviews, and blogs (Gretzel, Fesenmaier, Lee, & Tussyadiah, 2010). Yet, researchers’ ability to make sense of these stories is limited by current theoretical and methodological approaches. We contend that there is an opportunity to develop new approaches to measure customer experience using advanced text analysis and sentiment indices. Specifically, we use narrative theory to explain the importance of emotional peaks and valleys in stories and propose a natural language …

Tourism Operators On Trial: Pushing The Animal Justice Agenda Forward In Tourism In Spite Of Theory, David Fennell, Val Sheppard

TTRA Canada 2019 Conference

Abstract:

Justice tourism is emerging to be a topic of considerable interest as scholars strive to emphasise several important themes around the fair distribution of resources and benefits between and within societies (Mihalic & Fennell, 2014; Smith & Duffy, 2003). There is the belief that tourism must be ethical, share equity, underscore solidarity between hosts and guests, and place emphasis on respect, self-determination, as well as benefits on many different social, economic, and cultural levels (Scheyvens, 2002). An example of this type of research comes from Jamal and Camargo (2014), who discuss how limited distributive justice can be within destinations …

Examining The Effect Of Direct Mail On Casino Customer Visitation And Value, Sharon Stroburg, Chris Roberts

Perspectives in Asian Leisure and Tourism

Customer relationship management in the form of direct mail is widely used by regional and local U.S. casinos for the purposes of building customer loyalty. Casinos can spend hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars each year sending direct mail, both with or without offers, often experiencing low response rates. As a result, managers need a better understanding of the impact of direct mail on customer loyalty. This paper investigates the impact on customer loyalty, defined for purposes of this study as frequency of visitation and customer monetary value, when a customer receives a mailing piece from a casino and …

An Investigation Of Factors Affecting Financial Performance Of Taiwanese International Tourist Hotels, Hwai-Shuh Shieh, Jin-Li Hu, Yen-Chiao Chang

Journal of Hospitality Financial Management

This study adopts moving average regression and panel data regression to explore the factors affecting the financial performance of international tourist hotels in Taiwan. First, we use the unit root test to examine the data in moving average regression and in panel data regression and then use the Hausman test to examine whether the fixed-effects or random-effects model is suitable for panel data regression. Second, we employ the Lagrangian multiplier (LM) test to confirm that panel data regression is better. The findings show that domestic visitors, occupancy rate, operation year, and joining a chain system are the four key factors …

Workplace incivility is found to be on the rise and exists widely in Asian workplaces. The combination of stress, less formal organisational structures and technological advancements has been found to contribute to a surge in workplace incivility. The negative effects of workplace incivility lead to problems in productivity, employee retention and service delivery. This exploratory study aims to examine whether workplace incivility is prevalent in 5-star hotels and premier restaurants in Singapore, from the perception of customers. Borat Revisited: Film, Image Building And Emerging Tourism In Kazakhstan, Lucyann S. Kerry Dr

TTRA APac Chapter 2016 Annual Conference

This paper examines the relationship of film representations with an emerging tourism in Kazakhstan and Central Asia. It argues that films depicting Kazakhstan will support the future development of tourism’s potential in the Central Asian country. This paper further argues that the film industry’s globalization processes of production, distribution and exhibition are interconnected with this tourism development and serve as an effective promotional strategy.

Although the film Borat in 2006 had made fun of an imaginary Kazakhstan, the country had responded to these misrepresentations with an image building multi-million dollar ‘Heart of Eurasia’ campaign and the production of feature films …

We employ panel cointegration and panel DOLS methods for sixteen countries (Albania, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Malta, Morocco, Slovenia, Spain, Syrian Arab Republic, Tunisia and Turkey) that have a coastline on the Mediterranean Sea. The results indicate that there is a cointegration relation in the model, and tourist arrivals depend negatively on vulnerability and economic readiness and depend positively on governances …

Spatio-Temporal Data In Tourism Research, Dmitry Shkolnik

TTRA Canada 2016 Conference

The work presented here highlights the efforts at Destination Canada to use user-generated online content to learn about tourist movement patterns, activity, and relationships among groups of connected destinations. Using a massive open-data source of photographic metadata from the Flickr photograph sharing platform, we extract time-stamps and geographic coordinates from photo metadata to analyze activity and movement patterns of international visitors to Canada.

This analysis allows us to protect privacy while identifying rich and interesting patterns of tourist activity at both national and urban scales. The data further allows us to generate constructed tourist itineraries using extracted spatio-temporal data for …
