Fleas (Siphonaptera) Associated With Small Mammals Of Morocco Their Distribution And Host-Specificity, Michael W. Hastriter
Fleas (Siphonaptera) Associated With Small Mammals Of Morocco Their Distribution And Host-Specificity, Michael W. Hastriter
Theses and Dissertations
A total of 9,936 fleas, representing 27 species, have been processed for study and identified. They were associated with 2,011 small mammals, representing 38 species, collected throughout Morocco from October 12, 1969 to July 20, 1970 by personnel of the Smithsonian Institution. Two species, Synosternus cleopatrae pyramidis (Rothschild and Xenopsylla ramesis (Rothschild), comprised 68 percent of the fleas collected. Two subspecies are described: Ctenophthalmus andorrensis opistolatus, ssp. n. and Ctenophthalmus russulae tangerensis, ssp. n.. There are three ecological subdivisions of Morocco: the coast and coastal plains, the Atlas Mountains, and the pre-saharan desert. Even though there is some overlap, the …
The Effect Of Insect Damage On Indian Ricegrass (Oryzopsis Hymenoides) In Western Utah, Luis S. Guerra
The Effect Of Insect Damage On Indian Ricegrass (Oryzopsis Hymenoides) In Western Utah, Luis S. Guerra
Theses and Dissertations
Indian ricegrass at the Desert Range Experiment Station forty-seven miles west of Milford, Utah, is damaged by the larvae of Coenchroa illibella, Diatrae sp. and Typoceris ceraticornis, the latter being the most destructive. The biology of the insects and the extent of damage inflicted are discussed. Uninfested plants produced more new stems than infested plants. Plants having a basal diameter of 4 to 6.9 cm and 7 to 9.9 cm were the most frequently infested and, consequently, the most severely damaged.

Factors Affecting The Population Of Raptorial Birds On Sauvie Island, Oregon, Jeffry Gottfried
Dissertations and Theses
This study is an analysis of the various factors affecting the population of raptorial birds on Sauvie Island, Oregon. A census of diurnal and nocturnal raptors was carried out along with an analysis of food habits. Once the major prey species were determined they were censused, and the effects of the land management practices on their numbers was investigated. In addition, 100 randomly selected nest boxes were sampled so as to determine the extent to which raptors were making use of them. Red-tailed hawk and Great Horned Owl nests were located.
It was found that four diurnal raptors and three …

Alterations In Sulfolipid Metabolism In Malathion-Stressed Rats, Gail W. Disney
Doctoral Dissertations
The effects of malathion stress on, inorganic sulfur metabolism in female rats were investigated by extracting macromolecules containing ester sulfate from cellular lipoprotein. Sulfolipid, mucopoly saccharide, nucleotide, and sulfate transfer fraction were extracted from the lipoprotein prepared from five to seven pooled livers from rats fed diets containing 0.42, 0.10, and 0.0002 percent sulfate. Six groups of rats (two groups per diet) were fed the diets for 21 days. Rats were given either malathion in corn oil or only corn oil by stomach tube every 24 hours for three days and were killed on day 21. Lipoprotein was isolated from …

A Biosystematic Study Of Heterotheca Section Pityopsis, Frank D. Bowers
A Biosystematic Study Of Heterotheca Section Pityopsis, Frank D. Bowers
Doctoral Dissertations
A biosystematic study of the section Pityopsis of the genus Heterotheca was undertaken. Cytological, morphological, chromatographic, and hybridization studies were utilized to provide a basis for taxonomic treatment of the taxa. The species were divided into two broad groups; the Heterotheca graminifolia group (H. adenolepis, H. aspera, H. graminifolia, H. microcephala var. microcephala and var. aequilifolia, and H. oligantha) and the H. pinifolia group (H. falcata, H. flexuosa, H. pinifolia, and H. ruthii) Heterotheca ruthii appears to be intermediate between the two groups and is closely related to H. oligantha.
Cytology indicates the diploid species (N=9) …

English abstract: The cytogenetic characteristics of the varying lemming, Dicrostonyx torquatus stevensoni, (2n = 34), were investigated, and diploid chromosomal numbers were reported for four other nominal subspecies (exsul, nelsoni, richardsoni, and rubricatus) of the torquatus-group in North America. The diploid complements ranged from 30 to 44 chromosomes, and the fundamental number from 50 to 55. Chromosomal polymorphism was observed in all forms. In cross-breeding experiments, the mating of F1 progeny was not productive. The findings support the zoogeographic concept that populations of Dicrostonyx became fragmented or displaced southward during Würm time, with …

The ashgray blister beetle, Epicauta fabricii (LeConte); the striped blister beetle, E. vittala (F.) ; and the margined blister beetle, E. pestifera Werner collected in the field from plants of sweetclover low in coumarin content, fed preferentially in the Iaboratory on low-coumarin leaves when offered a choice between leaves from highand low-coumarin plants. The black blister beetle, E. pennsylvanica (De Geer) , not known to feed 011 sweetclover foliage, also fed preferentially in the laboratory on leaves from low-coumarin plants, although the rate of feeding was much slower than for the other species. By using appropriate genotypes of sweetclover and …

The Development Of Social Interaction, Play, And Metacommunication In Mammals: An Ethological Perspective, Marc Bekoff
The Development Of Social Interaction, Play, And Metacommunication In Mammals: An Ethological Perspective, Marc Bekoff
Ethology Collection
Analysis of the dynamics of the ontogeny of social interaction is of critical importance in order that behavioral development may be comprehended in its own right, and the relationship between infant and adult behavior understood. In this review, general concepts of behavioral development in mammals are discussed and analyzed, and the many variables that are involved are considered. When it is impossible to control or observe the social interaction of the developing organism in its natural environment, captive subjects should be used. There is increasing evidence that results obtained with the latter are related to social organization observed in the …

Bats Of Jalisco, México, Larry C. Watkins, J. Knox Jones Jr., Hugh H. Genoways
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
The fauna and flora of the Mexican state of Jalisco have received the much deserved attention of a number of biologists in recent years. Nevertheless, few comprehensive accounts of the biota of this interesting and physiographically diverse area have been published. In the period from 1949 to 1969, field representatives of the Museum of Natural History at the University of Kansas collected vertebrates in Jalisco. Among the specimens obtained from the state, the mammalian fauna of which never has been treated as a unit previously, were approximately 3000 bats, which form the primary basis for this report. In addition to …

An improvement to the WKB quantum condition for the rotation-vibration levels of diatomic molecules, known empirically to give RKR potentials of increased accuracy and to account for the Dunham correction Y00, is derived using uniform asymptotic methods. The role of the Langer transformation in this problem is also discussed.
The Effects Of "Hurricane Agnes" On The Benthic Diversity In The Hampton Ronds, Virginia, Area, Jeffrey Hyland
The Effects Of "Hurricane Agnes" On The Benthic Diversity In The Hampton Ronds, Virginia, Area, Jeffrey Hyland
Reports
Benthic communities are normally both physically and biologically regulated: However, if an interaction of the physical environment becomes significant, then the community becomes predominantly physically regulated. The arrival of "Hurricane Agnes", presumably causing a considerable reduction in salinity in nearby estuaries, would appear to create a significant physical stress on a benthic community. According to the "theory of environmental stability" (Sanders 1968) , the less stable the environmental parameters - such as salinity, oxygen., and temperature - the fewer species present. Thus, one might expect a decrease in benthic community diversity, due to the occurrence of such a natural disaster …

It is safe to say that the taxonomy of Digenea from fishes and invertebrates from Chesapeake Bay is in need of considerable attention. First, the knowledge of what flukes are present is lacking, with the exception of a few scattered papers dealing with a limited number of species. A few such papers about adult Digenea from fishes are by Hopkins (1) and Anderson (2) and about larval forms from second intermediate hosts are by Stunkard and Uzmann (3), Dillon (4), and Perkins (5). A list of the Digenea from Chesapeake Bay compiled by D. E. Zwerner and A. R. Lawler …
Myoglobin Content And Color Of Raw Pork Loin Roasts As Affected By Freezing At Two Rates, Jane Shellabarger Nocito
Myoglobin Content And Color Of Raw Pork Loin Roasts As Affected By Freezing At Two Rates, Jane Shellabarger Nocito
Masters Theses
Longissimus dorsi and psoas major muscles from fresh and frozen paired pork loin roasts were evaluated for myoglobin content and color reflectance. One of each paired roast was analyzed fresh and the other analyzed after freezing and thawing. Myoglobin in the thaw drip from frozen roasts was measured, also. Two freezing rates were tested: fast freezing in an air blast freezer at -27° to -29°C and slow freezing in a home freezer at -18°C. Roasts were stored for 28 days before thawing.
Myoglobin in the longissimus dorsi was significantly (P < 0.001) lower than in psoas major muscle. Less myoglobin (P < 0.05) was found in fresh than frozen thawed roasts; but there was no difference (P > 0.05) in myoglobin content associated with freezing rate. Apparently, myoglobin …

Comparative Hematology During Deficiencies Of Iron And Vitamin A In The Weanling Rats, Cing-Ya Chiao
Masters Theses
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of feeding male, weanling rats diets which were deficient in both vitamin A and iron on hematologic parameters.
The hematologic parameters which were measured were hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit values, red blood cell counts and cellular morphology of the blood smears as well as the level of iron stored in the liver.
In the first experiment, it was found that rats with iron and vitamin A deficiency, not only had higher hemoglobin and hematocrit values as well as higher red blood cell counts. They also had higher levels of iron in …
