Nutrition supplementation can be one of the integrated approaches to reduce gastrointestinal parasite (GIP) infestation. The study objective was to evaluate the impact of supplement type on the performance and resiliency against GIP of nursing lambs raised in woodlands. Katahdin-St. Croix cross lambs (23) with their mothers (18) were divided into two groups; they were rotationally stocked in separate sets of woodland plots and provided with ad libitum hay. Group-1 animals were supplemented with corn, and Group-2 with soybean (0.5% of live weight). Live weight, FAMACHA score, and body condition score were measured on Day 1, fortnightly, and at the …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The photoperiod and temperature sensitivity of the onset of flowering in 106 soybean accessions from the VIR collection has been studied for 8 years in a vegetation experiment in the conditions of Leningrad Province at 59°N, the northernmost point of soybean evaluation in the world. The accessions were previously field-assessed for the ability to form fully developed seeds in this region. The experimental conditions were extreme for soybean in terms of both photoperiod and heat supply. The emergence to flowering period length (LEF) in the sample set was 7.9 days longer, and the sum of the temperatures required …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Soybeans have been a favored livestock forage for centuries. However, only a few studies have been conducted to estimate the forage quality of soybean by near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS). In this study, 353 forage soybean samples were used to develop near-infrared reflectance (NIR) equations to estimate four forage quality parameters: crude protein (CP), crude fat (CF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and acid detergent fiber (ADF). Samples included 181 recombinant inbred lines derived from PI 483463 (G. Soja) × Hutcheson (G. Max), 104 cultivated soybeans (G. Max), and 68 wild soybeans (G. Soja). Two NIR equations developed for CP and CF …

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

Field experiments were conducted at the North Central Kansas Experiment Field near Scandia, KS, in the summer of 2014 to evaluate effect of late-season nitrogen (N) fertilizer application on modern soybean genotypes under dryland and irrigated environments. The main objective was to determine if the N application late in the season has an agronomical benefit to soybean producers. A unique fertilizer N source (urea) was applied at five N rates (0, 40, 80, 120, and 160 lb N/a) to soybean at the R3 growth stage. Overall soybean yields under dryland conditions ranged from 73 to 89 bu/a, whereas yield variation …

Evaluation Of Secondary And Micronutrients For Soybean Production In Kansas, M. N. Gutierrez, D. A. Ruiz Diaz

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

Study of secondary and micronutrients is growing because of their potential contribution to yield increases. The objective of this study was to evaluate soybean response to secondary and micronutrient fertilizer application to maximize yields. A randomized complete block design was employed with four replications at five locations during 2013 and five locations in 2014. Treatments consisted of an unfertilized control; micronutrient fertilizer as individual nutrients for boron, copper, manganese, sulfur, and zinc; and a mix of these nutrients using two different placements (dry broadcast and liquid band). Soil samples were collected prior to planting and after harvest. Soybean trifoliates were …

Under dryland, FP and CF treatments yielded 34 bu/a, differing in 27 bu/a compared with PI, EI, and AD scenarios. Under irrigation, FP and CF presented comparable yield levels, differing by close to 36 bu/a compared with crop intensification treatments (CF …

Tillage Study For Corn And Soybean: Comparing Vertical, Deep, And No-Till, E. A. Adee Jan 2015

Tillage Study For Corn And Soybean: Comparing Vertical, Deep, And No-Till, E. A. Adee

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

The need for tillage in corn and soybean production in the Kansas River Valley continues to be debated. The soils of the Kansas River Valley are highly variable, with much of the soil sandy to silty loam in texture. These soils tend to be relatively low in organic matter (<2%) and susceptible to wind erosion. Although typically well drained, these soils can develop compaction layers under certain conditions. A tillage study was initiated in the fall of 2011 at the Kansas River Valley Experiment Field near Topeka to compare deep vs. shallow vs. no-till vs. deep tillage in alternate years. Corn and soybean crops are rotated annually. This is intended to be a long-term study to determine if soil characteristics and yields change in response to a history of each tillage system.

Identification Of Yield-Limiting Factors In Southeast Kansas Cropping Systems, G. F. Sassenrath, X. Lin, D. E. Shoup Jan 2015

Identification Of Yield-Limiting Factors In Southeast Kansas Cropping Systems, G. F. Sassenrath, X. Lin, D. E. Shoup

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

Crop performance and yield within production fields varies as a function of growing environment and soil properties within the field. Components contributing to yield in corn, wheat, and soybean production were examined through on-farm measurements of soil properties in southeast Kansas. Additional tests in research plots explored components contributing to yield in greater detail. Environmental variability between the 2013 and 2014 growing seasons contributed to differences in yield. Additional variability in soil parameters influenced crop performance, particularly for soils high in clay content.

Developing successful strategies to ensure future increase in yield of soybean and peanut crops hinges in part, on improving the genetic basis of the cultivars. Knowledge of genetic relationships in crop breeding programs provides valuable information that can be used by plant breeders as a parental line selection tool. So far, a thorough analysis of genetic diversity among the soybean and peanut genotypes grown in Turkey had not been attempted at DNA level. In this study, inter-simple sequence repeats (ISSR) and sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP) markers were used to evaluate the genetic diversity between 21 soybean and 32 peanut cultivars …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Compared to full season soybean cropping systems, seed yield reduction is a major concern in double-cropped soybean production systems. This study was conducted at the Research Farm of Mustafa Kemal University, Hatay, Turkey, to determine if it is possible to enhance the yield of both full season and double-cropped soybean by narrowing row spacing. Two soybean cultivars, A3935 and S4240, were planted using row widths of 30, 50, and 70 cm, and twin row (50 25 50 cm) in 2004 and 2005. Seed yield and the other investigated plant parameters of double-cropped soybean were lower compared to full season soybean. …
