Hockey's Cutting-Edge Canvas – The Art Of The Goalie Mask, Jacob Becker
Hockey's Cutting-Edge Canvas – The Art Of The Goalie Mask, Jacob Becker
Capstones
My project is about the industry of hockey goalie mask artwork told through the perspective of primarily one artist, Ray Bishop, whom I visited at his Michigan workshop in October. "Hockey's Cutting-Edge Canvas" reports Ray's story, which includes details of his business, his background and struggles. The story also offers differing views from former goaltenders and current artists on the trend of goalie artwork across the NHL and lower-level leagues.

Pullinger's And Joseph's Inanimate Alice And Intercultural Engagement, Ana Abril
Pullinger's And Joseph's Inanimate Alice And Intercultural Engagement, Ana Abril
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Pullinger's and Joseph's Inanimate Alice and Intercultural Engagement" Ana Abril analyzes Kate Pullinger's and Chris Joseph's digital graphic novel and game. Inanimate Alice offers a model for online education environments and has been widely acclaimed. However, Abril's ana-lysis suggests possible ways for improving the empathic and educational potential of the novel/game for interpersonal and intercultural benefit. Abril bases her analysis on the theories of human interpersonal communication and then applies these findings to Inanimate Alice and suggests improvement so that participants would be able to decide if they want to play from the viewpoint of their own …

Baring It All, Barbie Cure
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This collection of creative nonfiction encapsulates the author’s career as a burlesque performer in New Orleans. The goal of this thesis is to tell her story using the techniques of creative nonfiction – specifically, the memoir. This is not merely a story of her career – it is a piece about her relationships, the author conquering her fears, and how she rises up to meet her goals. Part I tells of how the author discovers this new world and how she finds her place in it. Part II is the author’s personal narrative of her revelation to her family. This …

Navigating the immense quantity of information available today is a daunting task for most people. As librarians well know, resources available freely from the Internet are easy to search and access, however, not all information needs are satisfied by a Google search.
This book focuses on subdivisions that are of explicit value for researchers and librarians in the areas of theology, biblical studies, and pastoral ministry from the perspective of someone studying for Christian ministry or actively involved in ministry.

Invincible: Legacy And Propaganda In Superhero Comics, Natalie R. Sheppard
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Captain America and Iron Man are both iconic American heroes, representing different American values. Captain America was created during the Golden Age of comics and represents a longing for the past, while Iron Man was created at the height of the Cold War and looks forward to a new America. This paper will first establish the historical and cultural relationship between comic books and propaganda, beginning with the first appearance of Superman. It will pay special attention to the similarities and differences of Captain America and Iron Man, focusing on their representation of American values over time, and discuss how …

The “Other” Athletes: Representations Of Disability In Canadian Print Media During The London 2012 Paralympic Games, Melinda A. Maika
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
In our highly mediated society, media culture plays a critical role in socialization and offers a conduit for the naturalization of ideas. By this reasoning, stories told by the media about Paralympic athletes have the potential to influence our understanding of disability. This study reveals the representation of Paralympic athletes in Canada’s two national newspapers The National Post and The Globe & Mail surrounding the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Eighty-eight articles were collected over a 40-day period from August 15, 2012 – September 23, 2012. A critical disability studies lens guided methods of media frames analysis. Results demonstrated that coverage …

Viral Hollywood: How Social Media & Other Emerging Technologies Have Molded The Modern Moviegoing Landscape, Benjamin P. Conniff
Viral Hollywood: How Social Media & Other Emerging Technologies Have Molded The Modern Moviegoing Landscape, Benjamin P. Conniff
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
There’s no denying that the rise of the internet has brought about change in the Hollywood landscape. Fans now use social media, like Facebook and Twitter, to share word-of-mouth about movies both good and bad. In a sense, anyone can use these new “spreadable media” to be a critic. I myself took it one step further and started my own film review blog. I was even published in the College Heights Herald student newspaper for over a year! In gauging my audience’s tastes in social media usage and in film, I have uncovered the fact that the hot-button marketing issues …

Points Of Contention: Oddities, Delicacies, & Monstrosities, Arthur T. Brown
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Points of Contention, an MFA exhibit, features fifteen works of relief-printed images from carved linoleum and layers of type printed with antique letterpress wood type. The work constitutes a visual exploration of dissatisfaction and disenchantment presented through the context of odd stories in the news and major current events, such as election politics and the closing of Hostess bakeries, as well as, NSA data collection and gun violence.
This supporting thesis explores the conceptual and physical processes of creating the pieces, including researching other artists who have wrestled with similar topics and produced their own unique reaction and resolution …
Digital Cinema, Montage And Other Visualities, Shaun Huston
Digital Cinema, Montage And Other Visualities, Shaun Huston
Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations
Digital technology is enabling a reconceptualization of film and cinema. The pliability of digital media opens up, particularly, the theory and practice of montage to revision. This pliability allows for cheap and easy copying and combining of images, and, relatedly, the transition from film frame to digital screen provides a less precious and more flexible creative space for filmmakers. In this article, I use my documentary, Comic Book City, Portland, Oregon USA (2012), to demonstrate and discuss how digital production can be used to construct new forms of montage, particularly in the combination of creative norms and practices traditionally associated …

Brawn: The First Four Chapters, Brian Beise
Brawn: The First Four Chapters, Brian Beise
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The question of genre may be unimportant when writing or reading fiction, but the marketplace continues to draw those dividing lines. Moreover, there are tropes and techniques to be learned from each discrete genre of fiction. The creative portion of this thesis consists of the first four chapters of Brian Beise’s novel, Brawn. The introductory essay discusses the divisions of literary and genre fiction, and describes how borrowing elements from various genres informed the writing of Brawn.
"Wires And Lights In A Box": Fahrenheit 451 As A Product Of Postwar Anxiety About Television, Christine V. Shell
"Wires And Lights In A Box": Fahrenheit 451 As A Product Of Postwar Anxiety About Television, Christine V. Shell
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This project discusses the ways in which Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451 functions as an indictment of media culture. While many analyses of the novel focus on the text’s sweeping themes of literary censorship, this study instead centers on Bradbury’s depiction of media—particularly television—culture and the ways in which Bradbury feared it could be harmful. Although Bradbury wrote about a future society a century beyond his own, his novel serves as a remarkable reflection of his contemporaneous culture’s media consumption and gendered divisions; this thesis discusses Bradbury’s novel alongside such forces, considering the effects such influences may have had on …
Virgin Of Guadalupe: The Evolution Of Mexico's Mother Image Into A Cultural Icon, Tashina Garcia-Garza
Virgin Of Guadalupe: The Evolution Of Mexico's Mother Image Into A Cultural Icon, Tashina Garcia-Garza
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
Since its time of creation, the Virgin of Guadalupe image has been used in various political, social, and humanitarian struggles throughout Mexico and the United States. This remarkable image is responsible for unifying the people during post-conquest Mexico when discriminatory treatment and slavery of the indigenous people was common. The image is a symbol of Mexican nationalism embedded with Catholic and Aztec religious beliefs that has evolved into a popular cultural icon. This progression of her popularity can be seen in artistic expression from Mexican artists in the sixteenth century to the Chicano art movement in the twentieth century United …
The Post-Apocalyptic Turn: A Study Of Contemporary Apocalyptic And Post-Apocalyptic Narrative, Hyong-Jun Moon
The Post-Apocalyptic Turn: A Study Of Contemporary Apocalyptic And Post-Apocalyptic Narrative, Hyong-Jun Moon
Theses and Dissertations
Few periods have witnessed so strong a cultural fixation on apocalyptic calamity as the present. From fictions and comic books to Hollywood films, television shows, and video games, the end of the world is ubiquitous in the form of apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic narratives. Imagining world-changing catastrophes, contemporary apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic narratives force us to face urgent socio-political questions such as danger of globalization, effect of neoliberal capitalist hegemony, ecological disasters, fragility of human civilization, and so on. J. G. Ballard's final fictions, though they do not directly deal with apocalyptic events but evoke apocalyptic mood, portray the bleak landscape of …

Comics And Illustration From The Written; The Conversion Of A Story From Prose To Graphic Depiction., Kayla A. White Ms.
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This is a thesis that details the process of writing a short 30 page novel, and then converting the subsequent story into a graphic format via illustrations and into a comic book layout. The story itself deals in reworking our learned assumptions of good and evil, specifically in the supernatural and human possibility for both. The comic book format is an exploration of my reader’s different responses to the written and the graphic.

Prankster Questionaire., Matthew Landan 1972-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The creative thesis that I have written is a memoir. It is not complete in its detail or ambition but instead focuses on themes and topics of self-transformation, reinvention and the unintentional consequences of several nervous breakdowns and experiments with psychedelic substances. This thesis is just a beginning for a longer more drawn out memoir that will explore the themes above but also discuss family, one’s sense of self worth in the world and how patterns between fathers and sons repeat themselves. I hope to eventually publish this work in a commercial setting.

The Anchor, Volume 128.12: November 26, 2014, Hope College
The Anchor: 2014
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). As of Fall 2019 The Anchor has moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
