Students who are not afforded with the opportunity to read for pleasure often become students who choose not to read once the required reward-based reading system is removed (Pavonetti et al., 2002). Although anecdotal ideas for reading promotion are often shared in email, blogs, and journals, teacher librarians would benefit from a clear annotated list of reading promotion events designed to help them select a wide variety of events to create a planned sequence of events throughout the school year to best meet a variety of school and community needs.
The research based project is an annotated list of 31 …

An Evidence Base Of Vocabulary Development: Theory And Instruction, Susan L. Stark
Graduate Research Papers
Researchers have discussed the importance of vocabulary instruction for elementary students at length. The magnitude of the task is daunting, as is trying to choose which words to teach out of the many thousands. The question of how best to teach the thousands of words students need to be successful is difficult to answer. Direct instruction or learning words incidentally are two approaches discussed in the research. There are multiple factors that affect a student's vocabulary acquisition, including socioeconomic level, parental conversation, and whether English is a first or second language for the child. Additionally, the impact of vocabulary development …

Factors Motivating Children To Read, Tanya Marie Ossman
Graduate Research Papers
Reading is the most important skill learned by children during their educational careers. The ability to read is mastered by children through the careful guidance from teachers and parents. Adults tend to assume that providing children with the skills to read will foster a desire to read. Whether or not children pick up books and read them from front to back is dependent upon their motivation to read. The results of this review will provide insight into what factors are involved in reading motivation and what programs are available for children who lack the motivation for reading.
