Girl Pee: An AutohistoriaI, Taylor Sherritt Apr 2020

Girl Pee: An AutohistoriaI, Taylor Sherritt

Master of Humanities Capstone Projects

Influenced by queer theory, comic studies, and Gloria Anzaldua’s theorization of Nepantla, this project attempts to interrogate causation as an underlying principle of queer narrative and further explore how the need to justify transgender (trans*) existence works to preserve pathological ideologies around the trans* body. Specifically, I acknowledge and resist the common use of tropes such as “Born in the wrong body” and “I’ve always felt like the opposite sex”, as they are reproduced in and through trans* narratives as methods of justification for trans* existence. I argue that these tropes are etiological and grounded in biological determinism, as they …

Polybius, Katelin Branham Aug 2018

Polybius, Katelin Branham

Best Integrated Writing

This story brought me back to my video-game days—the roll of the joystick in my twelve-year-old palm, the smell of adolescent sweat, and the dizzying belief the game was out to get me. Now I’m wondering if that might have been true. Branham’s story delves deep into its main character’s consciousness to extract complicated questions about competition and friendship, the relationship between humans and technology, and the chilling question of what it means to be alive. Branham trusts her readers to keep up and crack the codes of the story, and what we’re rewarded with is both a wild fantasy …

Duck And Cover: How Print Media, The U.S. Government, And Entertainment Culture Formed America's Understanding Of The Atom Bomb, Daniel P. Wright

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This research project will explore an overview of the different subsections of American post-war society that contributed to the American "atomic reality" in hopes of revealing how and why the American understanding of atomic weapons did not slowly evolve over the course of a generation, but instead materialize rapidly in the years following the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. By analyzing government sources and programs, print media sources such as newspapers and magazines, and the American entertainment culture of the 1940s and 1950s, this research project will answer exactly why and how the American public arrived at its understanding of …

Increasing Disability Awareness Through Comics Literature, Ewa Mcgrail, Alicja Rieger Jan 2013

Increasing Disability Awareness Through Comics Literature, Ewa Mcgrail, Alicja Rieger

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

When faced with negative attitudes and experiences in communication and interaction in general education classrooms, students with disabilities can exhibit high levels of stress and frustration or even depression, low self-esteem and impaired self-acceptance. These undesirable and destructive feelings, in turn, may affect these students’ social and cognitive development skills and well-being, as well as their academic performance in such environments. The recent scholarship on empathy supports the effectiveness of comics for identifying and fighting negative and stereotypical attitudes towards those with disabilities. This article discusses strategies for educating students about disability and disability issues with the help of comics …

Batwoman And Catwoman: Treatment Of Women In Dc Comics, Kristen Coppess Race Jan 2013

Batwoman And Catwoman: Treatment Of Women In Dc Comics, Kristen Coppess Race

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

DC Comics has existed through the first, second, and third waves of feminism, publishing popular female characters who appeal to a mass market. By focusing on depictions of Batwoman and Catwoman, this paper examines the contrast between the social and political progress forms of feminism promised for women and the increasingly violent treatment of female characters in DC Comics, focusing on Batwoman and Catwoman. M. Thomas Inge maintains that male "comic book heroes [...] tend to fit most of the classic patterns of heroism in Western culture" (142). These heroes are designated by their completion of quests or missions, their …

Librarians As Partners In Service-Learning Courses (Part Ii), Maureen Barry Jul 2011

Librarians As Partners In Service-Learning Courses (Part Ii), Maureen Barry

University Libraries' Staff Publications

In Part I, I described two case studies during which I collaborated with service-learning instructors. Here, I will explore how librarian-faculty collaborations for service-learning courses are similar to or different from librarian-faculty collaborations in courses without service-learning and offer advice for librarians who may have the opportunity to support or become a partner in service-learning courses.

Librarians As Partners In Service-Learning Courses (Part I), Maureen Barry

University Libraries' Staff Publications

Service-learning is a high-impact educational practice that engages students (Kuh, 2008) and is a growing trend in higher education (Campus Compact, 2011). In 2008, my coinstructor and fellow library staff member, Cheryl Lauricella, and I incorporated service-learning in our for-credit information literacy (IL) course because we recognized that connecting information literacy to the real world through service-learning would lead to increased skill retention and engagement with the curriculum (Barry, 2011). Before this realization, when I taught my first few for-credit information literacy courses as a new professional, I asked my students to research a hobby or something related to their …
