Community Living Integration Club For Women In Recovery From Sex Trafficking, Toni Thompson
Community Living Integration Club For Women In Recovery From Sex Trafficking, Toni Thompson
Occupational Therapy Program Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Sex trafficking is one form of human trafficking, a heinous human rights violation that transcends international borders. People who have been trafficked often present with complex neurobehavioral, psychological, emotional, physiological, sensory, and developmental difficulties. The United Nations developed the international 3 p protocol to guide governmental agencies, non-governmental groups, and individuals in developing programs and legal actions of trafficking prevention, protection, and prosecution. Protection encompasses the recovery of trafficking survivors and community integration has been identified as an essential foundation for successful recovery. Measurable components of community integration include safe housing, stable employment, and vocation-focused education. This Capstone describes the …
Oooh, It’S Sooo Good!!!: Black Adolescent Females Experiencing The Delicacy Of Reading, Jacqueline B. Koonce
Oooh, It’S Sooo Good!!!: Black Adolescent Females Experiencing The Delicacy Of Reading, Jacqueline B. Koonce
The Qualitative Report
Black adolescent females have largely been neglected in the research literature on their avid reading. While Gibson (2010) explained that Black girls are often portrayed in the literature as struggling and even “remedial” readers, those Black adolescent females who are avid readers receive even less attention. The purpose of this study, then, was to investigate the voracious reading proclivities of this population in order to provide a balanced view of Black adolescent females’ reading lives. The findings of this phenomenological study indicate that these five participants go beyond loving reading; they crave it. The meaning of reading for these participants …
Look Up In The Sky: Latent Content Analysis Of The Real Life Superhero Community, Daniel White, Marianna Szabo, Niko Tiliopoulos, Paul Rhodes, Michael Spurrier, Scott Griffiths
Look Up In The Sky: Latent Content Analysis Of The Real Life Superhero Community, Daniel White, Marianna Szabo, Niko Tiliopoulos, Paul Rhodes, Michael Spurrier, Scott Griffiths
The Qualitative Report
The Real Life Superhero (RLSH) subculture is a growing global community of individuals who adopt the superhero motif and are motivated by prosocial goals. Although the community has been the focus of documentaries, news articles and numerous internet forums, little academic research has been conducted on the composition of this subculture. Through the use of an online survey, socio-demographic information about this community was collected. This data was compiled and analysed via qualitative means to develop not only an overarching review of the composition of the subculture but also how members perceived themselves and other members. Membership and identity within …
Engaging Young Fathers In Research Through Photo-Interviewing, Nicolette Sopcak, Maria Mayan, Berna J. Skrypnek
Engaging Young Fathers In Research Through Photo-Interviewing, Nicolette Sopcak, Maria Mayan, Berna J. Skrypnek
The Qualitative Report
Although conducting interviews is the most popular research strategy in qualitative research, we question whether it is the best strategy to use with young fathers and other populations who may be less willing to share personal experiences and thoughts with an unknown researcher. The reluctance of young fathers to engage in research leads to the omission of important perspectives and inadvertently results in young fathers' being understudied and unwittingly excluded from support programming and services. In this paper, we describe our experiences of using two different research strategies with young fathers: conventional in-depth interviews (i.e., interviews that rely on words …
A Phenomenological Multi-Case Study About Social Success Skills, Aspirations, And Related Media Experiences, Darnel Degand
A Phenomenological Multi-Case Study About Social Success Skills, Aspirations, And Related Media Experiences, Darnel Degand
The Qualitative Report
The social success skills valued and ultimately acquired by youth during their formative years can be better understood by examining the social spaces, processes, and interactions that are related to their personal aspirations and related media experiences. Using a phenomenological approach, I conducted a year-long multi-case study about two Black male high school students’ thoughts on social success, their aspirations, their social experiences, and their experiences with media. The participants were selected using purposeful sampling. I collected data through semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and observations. I performed analyses by using the hermeneutic cycle which requires one to repeatedly read text, …
Exercising Autonomous Learning Approaches Through Interactive Notebooks: A Qualitative Case Study, Vani S. Jaladanki, Kakali Bhattacharya
Exercising Autonomous Learning Approaches Through Interactive Notebooks: A Qualitative Case Study, Vani S. Jaladanki, Kakali Bhattacharya
The Qualitative Report
Grounded in the theoretical framework of interpretivism, the purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the experiences of a teacher from an inner city high school in South Texas when using interactive notebooks to inform students’ understanding of physics concepts. The participant for the study was purposefully selected with an intention to gain an in-depth understanding of the experiences. Data collection incorporated multiple methods such as interviews, participant observations, and document analysis. Descriptive, In-vivo, process, and Labovian six-part model of narrative coding were used to reduce and manage data. The codes were grouped into eight categories. Two major …
Three Adaptations Of The Japanese Comic Book Boys Over Flowers In The Asian Cultural Community: Analyzing Fidelity And Modification From The Perspective Of Globalization And Glocalization, Soo Jung Hong
The Qualitative Report
A wide variety of cultural products have been adapted into a brand new text in the process of globalization. The three adaptations of the Japanese cartoon, Boys over Flower, in the following countries: Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan have very similar storylines. The three storylines, although similar, have several modifications due to the differing audiences and goals of each series. Based on the idea of globalization; fidelity in the adaptation can be understood as emphasizing the shared values and community spirit between cultures while modifications can be interpreted as organizational gatekeeping. This study analyzes how the narratives in the three …
Queering Methodologies: Challenging Scientific Constraint In The Appreciation Of Queer And Trans Subjects, Joshua M. Ferguson
Queering Methodologies: Challenging Scientific Constraint In The Appreciation Of Queer And Trans Subjects, Joshua M. Ferguson
The Qualitative Report
Qualitative studies require a queer perspective to challenge stagnant forms of scientific discourse. This paper argues for a deconstruction of hegemonic qualitative practices in order to appreciate and listen to queer and trans subjects when employing qualitative research and methodologies. I focus on qualitative methods from an audiovisual perspective to suggest that there is scientific constraint in the way researchers still approach qualitative methodologies. I propose some foundations for thinking about queer qualitative methods that employs queer theory in relation to a self - reflexive creative perspective towards ethics, research and representation. Moreover, I critically analyze the HBO trans documentary, …
