Miracles And Laws Of Science: Insights For Contemporary Dialogue On Divine Action From Said Nursi And Thomas Aquinas, Edmund Michael Lazzari
Dissertations (1934 -)
This dissertation is a work of theology-science dialogue and Christian-Muslim dialogue, putting Bediuzzaman Said Nursi (1877-1960) and St. Thomas Aquinas (1226-1274) in conversation with contemporary debates in the wake of the Vatican Observatory-CTNS Berkeley conferences, or the Divine Action Project (DAP). This dissertation explores the question of how classical monotheists can hold coherently the coexistence of both miracles (defined as the operations of creatures in ways not anticipated by the regularities of the cosmos) and the laws of science (defined as the statistical generalizations of the regularities of the cosmos). The Photographer's Wife: Emmet Gowin's Photographs Of Edith, Mikell Waters Brown
The Photographer's Wife: Emmet Gowin's Photographs Of Edith, Mikell Waters Brown
Theses and Dissertations
Exemplified in the oeuvres of photographers Alfred Stieglitz, Harry Callahan, Lee Friedlander, and Emmet Gowin, the photographer's wife is a distinctive subject in twentieth-century American fine-art photography that fuses the domains of public and private life through the conflation of art and marriage. The transgressive nature of this juncture can be located in a confluence of gazes - the artist's, the subject's, and the viewer's - that are embroiled in constructing subjectivities. The phrase "photographer's wife" underscores an assumed imbalance of power reflecting a binary of active/passive, artist/model, and husband/wife. It is this study's contention that the complexity of the …
August Vilmar's Theology Of Fact Versus The Theology Of Rhetoric, Martin Conkling
August Vilmar's Theology Of Fact Versus The Theology Of Rhetoric, Martin Conkling
Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers
The work and theology of August Vilmar has largely been neglected in this country even though he was a prominenet theologian who lent substantial weight in a momentous effort to resurrect and restore the Lutheran confessions- to Germany in the first half of the nineteenth century. This translation is an attempt to recognize the vast contributions which Vilmar made to this effort and to identify those writings which would serve the church well today. Vilmar left no school of thought or method behind him as other great figures in the German universities often did. There are many reasons for this …
