Teaching Trauma-Affected Students: A Qualitative Investigation Of Teacher Perceptions, Cheryl R. Haynes

Trauma-affected children in early grades provide unique challenges for classroom teachers. To better understand these challenges, this study examined the experiences of 12 PreK to first-grade Northwest Georgia educators as they support trauma-affected students. Data collection came from semi-structured interviews, memoing, and member checking. Reasons for supporting trauma-affected students discussed in this study include aggressive behaviors in the classroom setting, volatility of home culture, social-emotional needs, and the impact of Covid-19 quarantines. Challenges facing teachers included a lack of knowledge about child trauma, the lack of training on working with trauma-affected students in teacher preparation programs, and the need for …

Intimate relationships within the U.S. military community face domestic violence perpetration at rates three times higher than the civilian population. Currently, both military and civilian agencies work to combat this domestic violence in military relationships. However, delivery of service and intervention techniques are not universal among these providers, and because of this, gaps have been identified. This research, comprised of the nine 45-minute interviews of military agency and civilian non-profit service providers, highlighted four major themes impacting the prevention and intervention of domestic violence in military populations including prevention limitations, conflicting approaches to the truth in a case, lack of …

Purpose: The specific objectives of this study were to describe the experience of verbal abuse by military spouses, determine if the experiences of verbal abuse were antecedents to other types of abuse, and construct a model to explain the experience of verbal abuse for military spouses.

Comparing Domestic Assaults In Military And Non-Military Populations: A Test Of Social Learning Theory, Crystal S. Carey

This study examined factors relating to the severity of domestic assaults in military and non-military populations by examining a sample of 599 clients admitted to battered women's shelters over a 22-month period. This study addressed the following question: What differences, if any, exist between the severity of domestic assaults committed by military and non-military offenders, and what explains those differences?

The following factors as they may relate to severity of domestic assault are measured: batterer race, batterer income, victim income, batterer military status, and weapon involvement. Analyses reveal no significant differences in injury severity between assaults perpetrated by military and …

This project examined whether there is a change in the rates of child abuse reported in communities with active military installations, specifically Fort Irwin in Barstow and Marine Corp Air Ground Command Center in the Morongo Valley, in comparison to a comparable non-military communities, during times of military conflict from October 2000 through October 2004.
