Historia

Historia is a joint publication of Eastern Illinois University's History Department and the Epsilon Mu Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta. Edited entirely by EIU students, Historia is designed to offer undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to publish their work. Students who wish to work as Historia editors must enroll in HIS 4900 (Historical Publishing), which is offered each spring. Students who wish to submit articles or reviews for consideration are welcome to do so at any time.

Historia earned third place in Phi Alpha Theta's Gerald D. Nash History Journal Prize competition in Division I in 2011.

Resorts In Southern Appalachia: A Microcosm Of American Resorts In The Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Centuries., Mary F. Fanslow

Five resorts in East Tennessee--Montvale Springs and the Wonderland Hotel in the Smokies, Tate Spring in the Holston River Valley, Unaka Springs on the Nolichucky River, and the Cloudland Hotel at the summit of Roan Mountain--stand testament to the proposition that their region engaged fully with areas outside southern Appalachia. Their origins, clientele, and health and leisure offerings followed those of other resorts of the same time period. Moreover, the effects of national socioeconomic trends on the hotels serve as a contradiction to the stereotype of southern Appalachia as an isolated region barricaded from the outside world by mountainous topography. …

Thomas P. “Tip” O’Neill, Man of the House as he aptly called himself in his 1987 memoir, stood as the quintessential Irish-American representative man for half of the twentieth century. O’Neill, often misunderstood as a parochial, Irish Catholic party pol, was a shrewd, sensitive, and idealistic man who came to stand for a more inclusive and expansive sense of his region, his party, and his church. A study was made of the William Lord Collection of business papers in the Brick Store Museum, Kennebunk, Maine, relating to the activities of William Lord as a merchant and as a shipowner between 1820 and 1860. Lord ran a country store from 1820 to 1828 and from 1830 through 1840. He commenced to invest in ships in the early 1830's.

As a merchant, Lord sold goods shipped from Boston and returned some local produce for sale in Boston or for re shipment to southern ports. The Kennebunk offerings were mainly hay and lumber. Products purchased and sold were carried …

So badly wounded that he had to be propped up in a chair to face the firing squad, James Connolly was executed by the British on May 10, 1916 in Dublin's infamous Kilmainham Jail. He had been one of the leaders of the abortive Easter 'Rising against English control of Ireland. This event in itself was sufficient to guarantee him a significant place in Irish history but Connolly had achieved prominence in other activities as well. This thesis pertains to the efforts of the Mormons in establishing their Church among the Irish and is arranged to give a chronological account of activities there. A brief background of the establishment of Christianity in Ireland and a knowledge of numerous conflicts between Catholics and Protestants helps to understand the complex religious interaction occurring at the time Mormonism was introduced in that country. The difficulties encountered by the first Mormon missionaries in Ireland suggest reasons why the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints did not expand as rapidly as it did elsewhere in Britain and other European countries. …

Chester News 1923

The Chester News was a semi-weekly, later weekly continuation of the Semi-Weekly News established in 1913. The name changed to the Chester News in September 1917 retaining the number sequence of the Semi-Weekly News. In 1917 it was a semi-weekly Democrat newspaper. About 1942, it became a weekly paper. W. Ward Pegram and Stewart L. Cassells were the owner/publishers. W. Ward Pegram, Jr. took ownership after his father’s death and published the paper until September 1971 when it merged with the Chester Reporter to form the News and Reporter which is still in publication.
