South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks annually spends >$500,000 managing crop damage caused by grazing Canada geese (Branta canadensis). Foliar applications of a chemical feeding deterrent could provide an effective alternative to the methods currently being used to reduce damage. In 2011 and 2012, we evaluated Rejex-It Migrate Turfguard®, Bird Shield®, Avian Control®, and Avipel® as grazing deterrents. We used a ground sprayer to apply the treatments every 7 days to plots in soybean fields in Day County, South Dakota. We monitored activity in the plots using time-lapse photography. Various scanning electron microscopy preparative techniques have been used by researchers to examine sectional views of dry, mature soybean (Glycine~ CL.) Merr.) seed coats. Such previously employed techniques were utilized In our preliminary investigations of seed coat structure, but often yielded unacceptable preservation. Consequently, eight preparative techniques were evaluated In an effort to define conditions required to obtain consistently high quality preservation of soybean seed coats In sectional view. Of the eight procedures tested with the cultivar Williams 82, razor sections and mechanical fractures of dry seed coats yielded the poorest definition of anatomical features. Morphological And Textural Comparisons Of Soybean Mozzarella Cheese Analogs Prepared With Different Hydrocolloids, C. S. Yang, M. V. Taranto

The morphology and texture of mozzarella cheese analogs prepared from soy protein isolate, gelatin, fat and different hydrocolloids (gums) were evaluated and compared. The fracturability, hardness and adhesiveness of the cheese analog gels were found to be proportionally related to the amount of fat and gelatin, and concentration and viscosity of gums. However, the stretchability of the cheese analog progels was not controlled by the viscosity of gums, but by the amount of gum and gelatin in the formulation. Fat content affected the fracturability and hardness, but did not have a significant effect on the other textural parameters or stretchability. …

There are many reports relating the effects of fluorides on plant respiration. Fluoride has been regarded as an inhibitor of respiration. Warburg et al. (1942) demonstrated that fluoride inhibited enolase activity, therefore, decreased the respiration rate of yeast. Miller (1958), found a similar inhibition of enolase from pea seed. Bonner (1948), Bonner and Wildman (1946), and Laties (1949) reported that the fluoride ion in culture solutions reduced the respiration rate in Avena Coleoptile, spinach leaves and barley roots. Since the inhibition was reversed by the addition of pyruvate, they concluded that the inhibition of respiration was due to the inactivation …
