Soybean is a most important crop worldwide, accounting for 56% of world oilseed production and 69% of world protein meal consumption in 2003 (Soystats, 2004). Since their introduction in the early 1800's, forage soybeans have been grown widely in USA. Used originally as a forage crop, this use largely had been forgotten until Dr T. E. Devine (United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service; USDA-ARS) released 4 new forage cultivars. The availability of molecular markers has revolutionized conventional ways to improve genotypes in plant and animal breeding through genome-based predictions. Several models and methods have been developed to leverage the genomic information in the prediction context to allow more efficient ways to screen and select superior genotypes. In plant breeding, usually, grain yield (yield) is the main trait to drive the selection of superior genotypes; however, in many cases, the information of associated traits is also routinely collected and it can potentially be used to enhance the selection. Developing Microbial Based Process To Produce High Value Natural Antimicrobial (Glyceollin) In Soybeans And Pullulan From Sucrose, Andrea Zavadil

Glyceollin is a secondary metabolite produced under stress conditions by soybean to act as a plant defender to pathogen attack. The antimicrobial nature of glyceollin makes it a promising natural alternative to antibiotics if incorporated into livestock feed. However, production of glyceollin is highly variable, dependent on soybean variety, and fungal elicitor used as inoculum. Our study compares two fungal spore elicitors, Trichoderma reesei and Aspergillus sojae on soybeans of diverse maturity level, and fungal susceptibility to determine highest glyceollin titer. Spore inoculation with T. reesei elicited highest glyceollin titers of 2.42±0.20 mg/g at 120 h, while A. sojae elicited …

Continual use of antibiotics in the feed of food animals was viewed a solution to the problem of disease outbreaks in livestock produced in confinement operations. This practice also improved animal performance, likely due to the reduction in sub-clinical infections. Unfortunately, this practice led to a new problem, the development of antibiotic resistant microbes. This increase in antibiotic resistance reduced the direct benefits of antibiotics in animal production. Moreover, as antibiotic resistance spread from animal to human pathogens, this practice created a major public health concern. Flooding can significantly reduce soybean growth, development, and yield. Therefore, screening and identification of flood-tolerant soybeans will enhance development of cultivars that are well suited for flood-prone areas. Sets of screening tests were conducted in Stuttgart, Arkansas using three separate but related experiments, with the purpose of establishing effective flood tolerance screening protocol that can identify tolerant and sensitive cultivars. Each experiment was completely randomized with three replications. The first experiment involved screening of 256 maturity group (IV and V) cultivars. Pythium spp. are an important group of pathogens causing stand losses in Arkansas soybean production. New inoculation methods and advances in molecular techniques allow a better understanding of cultivar resistance and responses of Pythium communities to cultural practices. The objectives of this research were to i) characterize the resistance of soybean to P. aphanidermatum with two phenotyping assays that evaluated the seed rot phase of the disease; and ii) understand the effect of long term crop rotation on species diversity and iii) to determine the effect of location, temperature and continuous soybean and soybean-rice rotation on Pythium spp. diversity in …
