Development Of A Serious Game As A Natural Hazard Planning Decision Support Tool, Jody A. Thompson Jun 2024

Development Of A Serious Game As A Natural Hazard Planning Decision Support Tool, Jody A. Thompson

The Journal of Extension

As coastal populations grow, so does the exposure to natural hazards such as hurricanes and flooding, creating the potential for increased social and economic disasters. The literature indicates coastal residents remain complacent when planning before, during, and after an event. There is a growing successful use of serious games in natural resources planning, and a growth in the use of digital and electronic games. We developed the serious digital game Plan for It! in response to identified needs and to capitalize on the public’s familiarity with gamification and digital gaming.

How did life arise from the prebiotic conditions of the early earth? This problem has vexed scientists for decades with no consensus on its solution. Significant spontaneous formation of biopolymers such as proteins and nucleic acids in the aqueous phase appears to be improbable due to thermodynamic constraints. It has been proposed that mineral surfaces could have served as a catalyst for the initial formation of biopolymers. However, the feasibility of this mechanism has not been thoroughly studied. In this study, a particle simulation of polypeptide formation on surfaces is developed to assess the feasibility of this mechanism. Elementary processes …

Markov Chain Model Of Three-Dimensional Daphnia Magna Movement, Helen L. Kafka May 2024

Markov Chain Model Of Three-Dimensional Daphnia Magna Movement, Helen L. Kafka

Theses and Dissertations

Daphnia magna make turns through an antennae-whipping action. This action occursevery few seconds, hence, during the intervening time, the animal either remains in place or continues movement roughly along its current course. We view their movement in three dimensions. We divide the movement in the three dimensions into the movement on a two-dimensional lattice and the movement between the different planes. For the movement on the lattice, we construct a second-order Markov chain model to make predictions about which region of the lattice the animal moves to based on where it was at the last two time points. The movement …

Novel Vector Assignment Approach For Inherent Strain Modeling Of Laser Powder Bed Fusion Manufacturing, Lucas M. Morand May 2024

Novel Vector Assignment Approach For Inherent Strain Modeling Of Laser Powder Bed Fusion Manufacturing, Lucas M. Morand

All Dissertations

The expansion of the design space due to additive manufacturing (AM) has been a large motivator for the success of this family of processes. Despite the complexity of the physics in metal laser powder bed fusion AM causing significant stresses and strains in finished parts, the design advantages and subsequent performance improvements continue to drive the expansion of AM. Because the trial-and-error approach to AM part development is cost prohibitive, simulation of prints has become crucial. However, full thermo-mechanical simulation is susceptible to the same pitfall of time and computational cost in order to attain part-scale results. The development of …
