Preformed-particle gels (PPGs) have been applied for reducing excessive water production caused by fractures in reservoirs. A portion of the fractures existing in reservoirs is composed of a void part and a fracture tip. The PPG placement behavior and plugging performance could be mainly affected by the fracture tips. A fracture with a tip, called a "partially open fracture" in this paper, was designed to investigate the placement and water-plugging performance of PPG. Cylindrical sandstone cores were used to manufacture partially open fractures. Analysis Of Frozen Desserts Using Low-Temperature Scanning Electron Microscopy (Lt-Sem), Kinsey Elizabeth Macdonald

Commercial vanilla ice cream and other frozen desserts from the United States were analyzed for ice crystal length using low-temperature scanning electron microscopy (LT-SEM). Average ice crystal length was determined using multiple micrographs of each sample/product. Out of the products tested, 11 out of 15 samples had an average ice crystal length above the consumer sensory threshold limit of 55 µm. Products containing stabilizers tended to have smaller average ice crystal lengths than products without stabilizers. With a few exceptions, lower fat products tended to have larger ice crystals because there was less fat to stabilize the ice crystals. Four …

Factor XIIIA (FXIIIA) is a transglutaminase that crosslinks intra- and extracellular protein substrates. The oligomeric state of active FXIIIA remains controversial, and the present work commenced with addressing this issue. The results of size exclusion chromatography and analytical ultracentrifugation confirmed a dimeric state for zymogen and, for the first time, indicated a monomeric state for the active FXIIIA in solution. Comparing sedimentation properties of proteolytically and nonproteolytically activated FXIIIA suggested conformational and functional differences between the two forms. Those differences were further assessed in a series of catalytic activity studies. Kinetic analysis revealed affinity for the glutamine substrate was higher …

Various samples of human viscera fragments, sponges, and cloth were collected from embalming jars belonging to members of the Medici family of Florence. One jar was labeled with the name Vittoria della Rovere, who died in March of 1694. This jar contained viscera fragments that were identified as a section of collapsed intestine. The intestine of the Vittoria della Rovere sample contained a large concentration of pollen belonging to the Myrtaceae family. The Myrtaceae pollen was sometimes observed in clusters during analysis, which is indicative of purposeful ingestion of flowers, buds, or a substance derived from floral structures. Thus, the …

Carbon foam is a high niche material that consists of a highly porous, three-dimensional cellular network that is characterized by extremely high strength-to-weight ratios and low thermal conductivity. Due to these properties, carbon foams excel in structural and thermal applications, especially in the aerospace industry. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) video recording is used to characterize the solidification of small volumes of 99.999% pure gallium (Ga) and eutectic gallium-indium (eGaIn) under a high vacuum environment. Specimen are superheated to 55℃ using a hot plate, cast into spherical droplets, and cooled in situ by means of a Peltier cooling stage. Special attention is given to the preparation of the specimen prior to viewing because of gallium and its alloys’ nature to form an oxide layer when melted and air cooled. Blast furnace slag is a non-metallic byproduct generated by the production of iron and steel in a blast furnace at temperatures in the range of 1400°-1600° C. The alkali activation of blast furnace slag has the potential to reduce the environmental impact of cementitious materials and to be applied in geographic zones where weather is a factor that negatively affects performance of materials based on Ordinary Portland Cement. Cooking results in a drastic decline in digestibility of proso millet proteins, panicins. Scanning electron and confocal microscopy were used to observe morphological changes in proso millet protein bodies upon cooking and digestion that could be associated with the loss in digestibility. Spherical protein bodies (1–2.5 mm) were observed in proso millet flour and extracted protein. Cooking did not result in any noticeable change in the size or shape of the protein bodies. Structural characterization and magnetic properties of Zn-substituted Li ferrites with composition \linebreak Zn$_{x}$Li$_{0.45-x/2}$Fe$_{2.55-x/2}$O$_{4}$ (where x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5) were studied by varying sintering temperature T$_{S}$ (where T$_{S}$ = 1000, 1050, 1100, 1150, 1200, and 1250 $^{\circ}$C) of the six samples. The single-phase cubic spinel structure was found by XRD patterns and scanning electron microscopy revealed the microstructure of all the samples. Permeability (real, $\mu_{i}'$ and imaginary, $\mu _{i}'')$ was found to increase with Zn substitution and also with sintering temperature. Carbonaceous chondritic meteorites are considered some of the most primitive surviving materials from the formation of our solar system. Thus, these objects can provide information about planet formation through their physical properties (such as structure, composition, and morphology) which can be characterized using microscopy and spectroscopy techniques. In this work, the analytical methods of Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and optical microscopy are applied to determine the mineralogical, topographical, and elemental compositions of two carbonaceous chondritic fragments: Moss and Murray. The birth of the solar system (over 4 billion years) is speculated to have happened from a nebula, swirling and compacting in localized regions to eventually form the Sun and planets. This paper reports the corrosion resistant and cytocompatible properties of the hyaluronic acid-silane coating on AZ31 Mg alloy. In this study, the osteoinductive properties of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid (HA, 1–4 MDa) and the corrosion protection of silane coatings were incorporated as a composite coating on biodegradable AZ31 Mg alloy for orthopaedic applications. The multi-step fabrication of coatings first involved dip coating of a passivated AZ31 Mg alloy with a methyltriethoxysilane-tetraethoxysilane sol-gel to deposit a dense, cross-linked and corrosion resistant silane coating (AZ31-MT). We studied morphological and anatomical characteristics of seeds of 22 taxa in the sections Nomisma, Thlaspi, and Pterotropis of Thlaspi sensu lato from Turkey and the significance of these characters in a taxonomical context. The results show that the taxa differ from each other in terms of seed shape and color. The seed size ranges from 1.25 mm to 2.99 mm in length and from 0.66 mm to 2.16 mm in width, Thlaspi rosulare and T. tatianae having the largest and T. annuum having the smallest seeds. In this study, the macro- and micromorphological seed characteristics of the genus Crocus L. series Crocus taxa, including C. pallasii , C. turcicus , C. dispathaceus , C. asumaniae , C. mathewii , C. thomasii , C. oreocreticus , and C. cartwrightianus , were observed.
