The Higher-Level Phylogeny Of Cerambycidae Sensu Lato And New Insights Into The Structure Of Tufted Antennae, Stephanie Haddad Nov 2016

The Higher-Level Phylogeny Of Cerambycidae Sensu Lato And New Insights Into The Structure Of Tufted Antennae, Stephanie Haddad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cerambycidae (longhorned beetles) is a species-rich family of mostly wood-feeding beetles containing nearly 35,000 species. It belongs to the superfamily Chrysomeloidea and includes many ecologically and economically significant species. The higher-level phylogeny of Cerambycidae has never been robustly reconstructed using molecular phylogenetic data or a representative sample of higher taxa, and its internal relationships and evolutionary history remain the subjects of ongoing debate. As such, the systematics and evolution of Chrysomeloidea were reviewed herein to provide context for reconstructing the phylogeny of longhorned beetles using molecular phylogenetic data/analyses. The first higher-level molecular phylogeny of Cerambycidae was reconstructed via analysis of …

Modification And Utilization Of Nanoporous Gold For Loading And Release Of Drugs, Ibtisam Mohammed Al-Badri Nov 2016

Modification And Utilization Of Nanoporous Gold For Loading And Release Of Drugs, Ibtisam Mohammed Al-Badri

Theses

Nanoporous gold (np-Au) is a sponge-like structure of gold, which can be created by removing the less noble element from the precursor alloy, most typically silver or copper, using different chemical or electrochemical methods. It consists of interconnected ligaments and gaps between the ligaments, whose width can range from a few nanometers to a few hundreds of nanometers, creating a high surface area-to-volume ratio. Due to its many important properties (e.g., conductivity, high surface area-to-volume ratio, plasmonic response, biocompatibility, chemically inertness, and physically robustness), np-Au is suitable for different types of applications, including as a transducer for biosensors, in catalysis, …

Evaluation Of Strain Distortion Correction Protocol Using Scanning Electron Microscopy And Digital Image Correlation, Alexandra Mallory, Alberto Mello, Michael Sangid Aug 2016

Evaluation Of Strain Distortion Correction Protocol Using Scanning Electron Microscopy And Digital Image Correlation, Alexandra Mallory, Alberto Mello, Michael Sangid

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Scanning electron microscopy in combination with digital image correlation (SEM-DIC) is a useful technique for measuring strain in materials at the micro-scale. In particular, it can be used to identify micro-scale strain localizations that are the precursor to material failure. While SEM produces high resolution images of the microstructure, the images also contain a large amount of distortion that, during DIC, will result in distorted strain values that require correction. In this project, a nickel-based alloy underwent cyclic mechanical fatigue at three different high temperatures to a targeted maximum strain. Scanning electron microscopy imaging was done on a 200x150μm area …

Investigation Of Bond, Microstructure And Post-Fire Behavior Of Gfrp Reinforcement For Concrete, Omid Gooranorimi Jul 2016

Investigation Of Bond, Microstructure And Post-Fire Behavior Of Gfrp Reinforcement For Concrete, Omid Gooranorimi

Open Access Dissertations

Glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars are emerging as concrete reinforcements especially in applications where corrosion resistance properties are required. This dissertation focuses on bond properties, microstructure and post-fire behavior of GFRP bars. First, the bond of three GFRP bars with different surface characteristics was investigated by performing pull-out tests. A parametric bond-slip relationship was proposed for the GFRP bar with sand coated surface. The parameters were found by performing sensitivity analysis. The proposed bond-slip law was employed in an FEM model to predict the failure mode. Additionally, the model was employed in a GFRP-RC slab to replace the unrealistic …

Electrospinning Of Polymeric Solutions Using Opuntia Ficus-Indica Mucilage And Iron Oxide For Nanofiber Membranes For Treating Arsenic Contaminated Water, Venkatesh Eppili

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Water is the essential part of every organism and it is also a vital constituent of healthy living and diet. Unfortunately water contamination over the past decade has increased dramatically leading to various diseases. As technology advances, we are detecting many pollutants at smaller levels of concentrations. Arsenic (As) is one of those major pollutants, and Arsenic poisoning is a condition caused due to excess levels of arsenic in the body. The main basis for Arsenic poisoning is from ground water which naturally contains high concentrations of arsenic. A case study from 2007 states that over 137 million people in …

Synthesis And Properties Of Acrylated Epoxidized Soybean Oil Copolymers And Their Composites With Natural Fillers, Andrew Jacob Fox May 2016

Synthesis And Properties Of Acrylated Epoxidized Soybean Oil Copolymers And Their Composites With Natural Fillers, Andrew Jacob Fox

Honors Theses

As the global supply of petrochemicals diminishes, the polymer industry will need to incorporate renewable resources into the production process. Acrylated expoxidized soybean oil, a modified plant oil, is one possible candidate for use as a monomer in plastics. When polymerized alone, AESO creates a fairly unusable polymer, with poor physical and material properties. To improve the properties, the monomer can be copolymerized with styrene and other additives and can be incorporated into a composite to further increase the usability. By using biorenewable fillers, the overall use of nonrenewable materials in the composite can be further decreased. In this research, …

Direct Imaging Of Coexisting Ordered And Frustrated Sublattices In Artificial Ferromagnetic Quasicrystals, Barry Farmer, Vinayak Shantaram Bhat, Eric Teipel, J. Unguris, D. J. Keavney, Jeffrey Todd Hastings, Lance E. De Long

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We have used scanning electron microscopy with polarization analysis and photoemission electron microscopy to image the two-dimensional magnetization of permalloy films patterned into Penrose P2 tilings (P2T). The interplay of exchange interactions in asymmetrically coordinated vertices and short-range dipole interactions among connected film segments stabilize magnetically ordered, spatially distinct sublattices that coexist with frustrated sublattices at room temperature. Numerical simulations that include long-range dipole interactions between sublattices agree with images of as-grown P2T samples and predict a magnetically ordered ground state for a two-dimensional quasicrystal lattice of classical Ising spins.
